Tabu/Candlelight USA Its always great when while searching through the racks at your local music store, you find an item from one of your favorite bands that you didn't even know existed. I hadn't heard any news regarding the release of this DVD beforehand, nor any mention of it on any of the assorted messageboards I waste away my days at. So naturally, being a big fan of Enslaved (particularly the stuff from Mardraum onwards), I eagerly picked up this new discovery. What I would eventually hold in my hand would unfortunately lead to disappointment. Return To Yggdrasill: Live In Bergen is pretty sparse in what it offers. The concert footage of the Bergen gig only contains 8 songs, 5 of which come from the band's latest album, Isa. It is a pretty strong album, however a more varied setlist would had been much appreciated. Only Jotunblod represents the old material, while The Voices and The Crossing represent the two albums prior to Isa. As a result, this live set is biased toward the recent direction in sound, so those who live by their copies of Vikingligr Veldi and Frost will scoff at this. Visually speaking, its very similiar to Enslaved's first DVD release, Live Retaliation. In fact, you can mute the sound and it'll be hard to really tell which of the two you're actually watching. On the audio side of things, if you don't have a decent sound set up, you'll mostly be hearing a cacophonic mush. If anything, it nicely recreates the values found on the last few studio albums. The extras really aren't much to talk about. There's an interview with the band after the Bergen gig, some footage of the European tour (if you don't understand Norwegian then you can skip this) and the promo video for the Isa song. Doesn't really help the bare-bones feel of the DVD. Only recommended for die-hards who must have anything with the Enslaved name on it or you weirdos who wanna know what Ivar's buttcrack looks like (really, I should knock off a few points for that). 01. Allegiance 02. Ascension 03. The Voices 04. Lunar Force 05. Isa 06. Jotunblod 07. Return To Yggdrasill 08. The Crossing Score: 6/10
