Bludgeon - Crucify The Priest
Written by Chris Slack

Bludgeon come crashing out of Chicago with some full force metal. Great home recording from what I understand. When listening to the band, they remind me of a great mix of Death and Slayer. Some great riffs on here. The opener Smoke Screen comes at you like a ton of bricks. Bludgeon means business and that business is bone-crunching metal. They have some really great technical breakdowns and the build up into some great mosh riffs. I did feel that some songs were a little long at times but not that it hindered this CD at all. I am actually at a loss of words because any fans of Death must have this CD. I don’t think you would be disappointed in this at all. All I can say is go out and get this disc. You neck with snap in two from banging to this disc.

The Crown - Crowned in Terror
Written by Chris Slack

Sweden’s The Crown have been around since 1990 and has released two demos and five albums. The band’s lineup has remained stable until early 2001 when singer Johan Lindstrand decided to call it quits. He was replaced by Tomas Lindberg (ex At the Gates) giving us the lineup we have today. The Crown has been touring like madmen and are about to embark on a North American tour supporting their latest album.

The album starts out with a keyboard intro entitled “House of Hades” which could easily lead one to believe they were listening to a black metal CD. From there it abruptly leaps into the title track “Crowned in Terror”, a savage Swedish death opus. Nope, this is definitely not a black metal album! “Crowned in Terror” marks the debut of Tomas Lindberg on vocals and the veteran front man does not disappoint with his trademark pained screams and yells. Musicianship is solid as ever, remaining highly melodic but at the same time keeping the brutal edge that so many of The Crown’s fellow countrymen have all but abandoned. This is ten tracks of unforgiving melodic death metal that is sure to please.

If you like any of The Crown’s previous albums do yourself a favor and get this one. If recent Swedish death albums have you looking for something with a little more bit to it you can stop the search now. Two horns up for this release!

01 House Of Hades (intro)
02 Crowned In Terror
03 Under the Whip
04 Drugged Unholy
05 World Below
06 The Speed of Darkness
07 Out for Blood
08 I Am Hell
09 Death Is The Hunter
10 Satanist
11 Death Metal Holocaust

Falconer - Chapters from a Vale Forlorn
Written by Chris Slack

I don’t have much background on this band nor have I heard their first self-titled CD so I guess I can be considered a bit of a newbie as far as this band goes. I do know that they are from Sweden and that this album was engineered and mixed by Andy LaRocque. I also know that I am not the biggest power metal fan in the world so this review may be a little stilted.

To be honest I wasn’t looking forward to reviewing this one as most power metal vocals REALLY get on my nerves. I was a bit surprised by “Chapters from a Vale Forlorn” though because the vocalist didn’t do the god-awful stereotypical screams that seem to make up the majority of power metal on the market today. The vocals, although very clean and melodic, are much more masculine than most and actually seem to convey some *gasp* power to them. Musically it’s pretty much standard heavy metal but it does a pretty damn good job at conveying the medieval theme and imagery suggested by the lyrics and song titles. I think this album would really go over well at a medieval festival or a jousting event. If I was to compare this to anything I’d have to go with a metal version of Jethro Tull!

I would have no problem recommending this to fans of the genre although some might be a bit turned off by the lack of “True Metal Screams”. Check this sucker out if you’re either a power metal fan or a Jethro Tull fan looking for something a bit heavier. This is one power metal/true metal CD that’s going to get repeated playback in my stereo.

01 Decadence of Dignity
02 Enter the Glade
03 Lament of a Minstrel
04 For Life and Liberty
05 We Sold Our Homesteads
06 The Clarion Call
07 Portals of Light
08 Stand in Veneration
09 Busted to the Floor

Callenish Circle - Flesh-Power-Oblivion
Written by Chris Slack

Here we have the third full-length album from Netherlands based deathsters Callenish Circle. After bouncing from Hammerheart to Polar Bear Records to DSFA Records to Edgerunner records they have now settled down to a four album deal with Metal Blade.

Although I have seen this mostly listed as a death metal band I feel that Callenish Circle belongs more in the thrash metal genre, mostly due to the chunky guitars and a vocal style that varies a lot more than the typical death metal band. The album crosses several metal genres though, from the more melodic standard metal of “Take Me Along” and “Bleeding” to thrashier numbers like “Obey Me” and “What’s it Good For”. The album is capped off with a wonderful cover of Death’s “Pull the Plug” that closes off this release quite nicely.

This band has matured quite a bit since their earlier releases. Don’t take that the wrong way, they haven’t “wimped out” or gone mellow, they are just growing as a band and have really established a sound all their own. If these guys were to get some airtime on major market radio or MTV they could get pretty damned popular!

01 Obey Me
02 What's it Good For
03 Your Own Oblivion
04 Take Me Along
05 Bleeding
06 Your Final Swansong
07 Suffer My Disbelief
08 They Have Chosen
09 ...
10 Pull the Plug (Death cover)

Fuck...I'm Dead - Bring On The Dead
Written by Insane Wayne

Now THIS is pure musical insanity. Australia's own Fuck..I'm Dead fresh off their split 7" with Sanity's Dawn ready to hack, slash, and kill you again and again. This is exactly what this CD will do to you after a few listens. Believe me, this hasn't left my CD player in over a week. Songs range from 30 seconds, to 1 minute of pure grinding drum machine mania. And the good news is, the drum machine sounds natural, which is always a plus to me if you're using one. The CD starts out with Twist Of Death, then keeps beating your head in with tracks like Colon Commando, Skullfucked, and Shotgun Facelift. Plus as an added incentive, the tracks from the split 7" are included on this CD, as well as 2 live cuts at the end. The only downside is it's left me craving more from these guys. Cheers to the Razorback Records squad for signing these guys. It's good to see labels like them not bow down to the trendy garbage that's happening and bringing something that's just absolutely extreme over to our shores. This is definately one of the best CD's out there now.
