Century Media Wisconsin isn't exactly a hot bed of musical talent (their chief export appears to be frostbite), so its surprising that a band like Luna Mortis can rise out of a wasteland. Luna Mortis has concocted a brew of thrash, power and melodic death metal into their cauldron. These guys aren't that dissimilar to Nevermore, except they are fronted by a woman. Female vocalists in metal many times tend to be a gimmick, a way for a band to call attention to their otherwise worthless music (insert Arch Enemy joke here) but Mary Zimmer is the real deal. She has a great singing voice and her death tones are authentic. She knows what she's doing and how to use it properly. Like I mentioned earlier, the band's music is reminiscent of Nevermore, with the usual influences of Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc. Songs like Ash, Ruin and Forever More display the band's penchant for tight riffs coupled with Mary's versatile vocals. Reformation is a thrash blazer where guitarists Brian Koenig and Cory Scheider lay it all on the line with a series of technical solos that would make Dave Mustaine proud. This Departure slows everything down into a melodic ballad that truly show's Mary's strengths as a vocalist. With more massive songs like Never Give In and Last Defiance down the line, they will cement their stature as a band that is to be reckoned with in a few years time. 01. Ash 02. Ruin 03. Reformation 04. This Departure 05. The Absence 06. Forever More 07. Never Give In 08. Phantoms 09. Last Defiance 10. Embrace The End Score: 8/10 |
