Engorged, Lord Gore, Bung, and Belt Fed Weapon
04/27/2002
The Hurricane, Seattle WA
Although I was pretty beat from fighting the sold-out crowd at the Iced Earth/In Flames show I couldn’t resist heading to the Hurricane immediately afterwards for a few hours of gore/grind mayhem. Unfortunately this is the last death metal show at the venue as the owners are expanding the restaurant portion and eliminating the live music. I’ve never listened to any of the bands music but that’s no problem. It’s always cool to check out shows of bands I have never heard as it’s a more realistic measure of their talent. Due to attending the other show I missed Belt Fed Weapon once again, hopefully I can check them out sometime in the near future.
I arrived during Longview, Washington’s Bung’s set. They played your fairly typical crusty grindcore but were entertaining none the less. The vocalist had a very sick voice and was all over the place. Bands that move like that are a nice change from some of the more statue-like death metal outfits out there. They seemed to really enjoy themselves although no one was on their feet during their set.
Next up was Portland, Oregon’s Lord Gore. The band members were all wearing blood-splattered aprons so I got the feeling right away that they were going to be sick fuckers. Lord Gore featured a great dual vocalist combo, one of them was very low and guttural while the other did the higher pitched shrieky method of delivery. This combo resulted in some of the sickest vocals I have ever heard, which is remarkable considering the fact that they used no effects on the vocals. Even though they were performing without a bass guitarist they still were able to produce a pretty heavy sound. Their music reminded me of “Symphonies of Sickness” era Carcass (which I really like) and other early grind acts. They did a cover of Repulsion’s “Decomposed” that will be appearing soon on a “Tribute to Repulsion” CD which kicked major ass. Dedicating the song “Zombie Molestation (Raped By The Dead)” to fans of Italian zombie movies (I think I was the only one there) helped a lot in winning me over as I’ve been into Eurohorror for a hell of a long time. Lord Gore’s debut CD, “The Autophagous Orgy” will soon be out on Razorback Records. Check out some mp3s on their site at http://www.lordgore.net/
Closing off the evening was Engorged, also hailing from Portland Oregon. These guys are signed to Necropolis/Deathvomit Records and should have a new CD out in the near future. Engorged plays a style of music that seamlessly combines elements of death metal, grindcore and thrash into a sound that is wholly their own. These guys could be “the next big thing” in grindcore, which says something as there aren’t too many grind bands that are all that well known. They played a strong live set ending with a crowd pleasing cover of Exodus’ “Bonded by Blood”. I don’t really know what else to say about these guys other than they kicked fucking ass! Sorry, but I didn’t get any photos at this show as I used my digital media up at the earlier show and didn’t bring a spare card. Next time!
