Re: Midsommar

I heartily concur. This one had me cringing before anything nasty actually happened. One can say WICKER MAN all one wants, but that does NOT substitute for viewing the actual film.

Re: 2018 in review

And less than an hour after I post this recap with multiple DEATH WISH references, I see that original DEATH WISH author Brian Garfield has passed away. Wow.

2018 in review

Thanks to various personal issues, I'm a bit behind in my annual recap duties. Hopefully I'll be able to maintain the tradition for years to come, but no promises. It would be a shame to leave it here, because 2018 was one of the most AMBITIOUS years for horror films in my memory. So many films aspi...

"Christmas" movie roundup doesn't contain a single "Christmas" movie, but still... SPIDER-MAN--INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE: We should have had this instead of the Andrew Garfield movies (especially the second one). A thoroughly entertaining blend of the exciting and the absurd and a fine tribute to the le...

Suspiria (remake)

So... the new SUSPIRIA is guaranteed at least one more week's play at the arthouse. I'm not sure whether I should be surprised... it's the average chance you take between a "prestige" director and near-zero box office. But now that we've all at least had the CHANCE to see it? I'll speak a little mor...

The Nun

While I continue to provide in-depth video reviews for those publications that request them (such as SCREEM), I've had precious little time or patience to review contemporary theatrical releases on-line for quite a while (I have no desire to be passed through a series of filters in order to determin...

Revenge

Even though I've eased myself out of feature reviews (print magazines excepted) these days, once in a while I have to make an exception when I find a film particularly provocative, troubling or part of a much bigger picture I've covered in the past. REVENGE (frankly, one of too many films to use tha...

Ketchup: ISLE, INFINITY, NEVER, 1945, REVENGE, BAD

I've been seeing quite a few extremely grim films lately (but as usual, that's my own fault). Luckily, ISLE OF DOGS was there to reaffirm some much needed sentiment. Wes Anderson managed to turn a simple "boy and his dog" story into a genuine animated Japanese samurai epic and it's simply one of the...

Ketchup: THOROUGHBREDS, STRANGERS, HURRICANE, GRINGO

THOROUGHBREDS is oversold as a HEATHERS-type black comedy, but there's truly nothing funny going on here: just the squirms resulting from passive acceptance of what should come as traumatic shock. Olivia Cooke (THE QUIET ONES) is the thoroughly disaffected Amanda, and Anya Taylor-Joy (THE WITCH) is ...

Death Wish (remake)

So... NOT nominated for an Oscar next year is this doomed Eli Roth remake. Delayed once because of the Vegas shooting. NOT delayed after the Florida shooting because ultimately the show must go on. And prematurely shot down (pun intended) by the fans of the Charles Bronson original and its cult sequ...

So... here we are again, but with one rather profound difference. You may or may not have noticed that I stopped posting individual movie reviews on-line about halfway through the year. In other news, this also applies to my individual reviews of theatrical productions. The reasons are many, the rea...

Ketchup: CHRISTMAS, DISASTER, THELMA

Okay... you may or may not have noticed that I've all but called a halt to reviewing (save for publication). I'll get more into that when I provide my year's-end wrap-up (which I have NOT called a halt to). But a few big screen titles I caught recently struck me on a personal level and I'd at least ...

Ketchup: WISH UPON, THE BEGUILED

WISH UPON: Then there was the film I was prepared to completely dismiss out of hand because it was a formula PG-13 high school horror story. I saw it anyway (because that’s what I do). Well... I don’t think I actually knocked the film publicly in advance, but if I did, I owe somebody an apology, bec...

Ketchup: SPIDEY, HOURS, APES

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again... there are no longer sufficient hours in the day or days in the week for me to sit down and give full reviews to the movies and plays I attend. But it’s equally difficult to simply up and quit after so many years of doing just that. And I’ve let no less th...

Baby Driver

Okay... meat and potatoes premise. "Baby" (Ansel Elgort) is the best getaway driver since Ryan O'Neal and Ryan Gosling, and he thinks that "one last job" will get him out from under the thumb of crime boss Kevin Spacey. Nothing new here. Gimmick. Baby has tinnitus (and plenty of residual emotional i...

47 Bad Batches Down...

I don't feel like reviewing 47 METERS DOWN. In a nutshell, it's a well-made and suspenseful shark/survival thriller... but I understand they changed the ending (probably to fluster anyone who snagged the quickly-recalled DVD release last year--the film was actually made in 2012!) much to the detrime...

Wonder Woman

They say that reviews (not limited to movies, of course) ultimately tell you more about the reviewer than they do about the product being reviewed. Perhaps so. It also seems to be true that one can't offer up a review of WONDER WOMAN without stepping into some socio-political maelstrom or another. S...

It Comes at Night

In this day and age of trailers determined to pretty much blow entire movies ahead of time, it was refreshing to see how the spots for IT COMES AT NIGHT refused to divulge its specific premise to potential viewers. Well... that's because not even the actual FILM provides that information. IT COMES A...

Alien: Covenant

Let me preface this brief review by reminding you that I'm solidly in the "loved PROMETHEUS" camp. But also remember that I've admired the ALIEN series pretty much throughout for its daring and its refusal to conform to audience expectations. For four "real" series entries, you never got the same mo...
