Re: 2024 Viewing Log Thread

Again, I'm sorry that I no longer have the time to provide a year-length recap of the new films I witnessed... but as for 2023, long story short? The best film of 2023 was undoubtedly GODZILLA MINUS ONE. The best flat-out HORROR film of 2023 in my book was TALK TO ME. The most frustrating "midd...

Re: 2021 in review

But I'll tell you what. THE MENU was my favorite film of the year, but if that's not quite "horror" enough I'd hand it to the one-two punch of X and PEARL, which frustrates me because MAXXINE didn't make it out in time to complete the sequence. THE BLACK PHONE would probably stand as my fa...

Re: 2021 in review

Sorry--I got the impression nobody was reading these either here or on FB as I received no response whatsoever this year or last year. I am also overwhelmed with personal projects above and beyond the movies and I can barely keep track of what I'm watching outside of brand-new movies. Still, it was ...

2021 in review

I've put this off long enough, and if I don't dive in right now I'll never get it done. 2021 was insane between 2020 leftovers that I didn't get to see on the big screen, theatres re-opening and major studios sending new releases straight to streaming, I saw many things I otherwise might not have. A...

Re: 2020 in review

So... 2020 decided to end the movie-going year for me shortly after I wrote this. And I can't adapt to reviewing direct-to-streaming movies the same way I did theatrical releases. Sorry, folks--I'm at home. People walk in. People talk. Phones ring, interrupt and annoy. I can't re-create the theatric...

2020 in review

The movie year 2020 started off with something that was advertised as beginning at 11AM. And the traditional “pre-show” kicked off in its new order. We used to get the Cinemark “enjoy the show” ad JUST before the feature started. Now we get it first. And the popcorn tumbles down... and then the out-...

2019 in review

Wow... I normally wait a couple of days to collect my notes and thoughts before I dive in, but I have to go back to work tomorrow and I've got quite a bit on my plate besides that, so there's no time like the present! By and large I found the horror output of 2019 (and I'm still keeping it in the re...

I heartily concur. This one had me cringing before anything nasty actually happened. One can say WICKER MAN all one wants, but that does NOT substitute for viewing the actual film.

2018 in review

Thanks to various personal issues, I'm a bit behind in my annual recap duties. Hopefully I'll be able to maintain the tradition for years to come, but no promises. It would be a shame to leave it here, because 2018 was one of the most AMBITIOUS years for horror films in my memory. So many films aspi...

Suspiria (remake)

So... the new SUSPIRIA is guaranteed at least one more week's play at the arthouse. I'm not sure whether I should be surprised... it's the average chance you take between a "prestige" director and near-zero box office. But now that we've all at least had the CHANCE to see it? I'll speak a ...

The Nun

While I continue to provide in-depth video reviews for those publications that request them (such as SCREEM), I've had precious little time or patience to review contemporary theatrical releases on-line for quite a while (I have no desire to be passed through a series of filters in order to determin...

Revenge

Even though I've eased myself out of feature reviews (print magazines excepted) these days, once in a while I have to make an exception when I find a film particularly provocative, troubling or part of a much bigger picture I've covered in the past. REVENGE (frankly, one of too many films to use tha...

Ketchup: ISLE, INFINITY, NEVER, 1945, REVENGE, BAD

I've been seeing quite a few extremely grim films lately (but as usual, that's my own fault). Luckily, ISLE OF DOGS was there to reaffirm some much needed sentiment. Wes Anderson managed to turn a simple "boy and his dog" story into a genuine animated Japanese samurai epic and it's simply ...

Ketchup: THOROUGHBREDS, STRANGERS, HURRICANE, GRINGO

THOROUGHBREDS is oversold as a HEATHERS-type black comedy, but there's truly nothing funny going on here: just the squirms resulting from passive acceptance of what should come as traumatic shock. Olivia Cooke (THE QUIET ONES) is the thoroughly disaffected Amanda, and Anya Taylor-Joy (THE WITCH) is ...

Death Wish (remake)

So... NOT nominated for an Oscar next year is this doomed Eli Roth remake. Delayed once because of the Vegas shooting. NOT delayed after the Florida shooting because ultimately the show must go on. And prematurely shot down (pun intended) by the fans of the Charles Bronson original and its cult sequ...
