Seeking some Vehicle Input

Post by Morbid » Thu Nov 20, 2008 12:53 pm

So, as some may know my engine caught on fire last week, which means it is time for a new car.

I went to a used car dealership that I deliver to and looked at a few cars, and I have narrowed it down to two.

92 Volvo Wagon
and
98 Dodge Grand Caravan

Both have great millage, perfect amount of room for the drums, and run great. Of course both have their pluses too...

Volvo - Great cars, perfect amount of room for drums, not to little, not to much, good for winter driving, gets more miles to the gallon (not by much though).

Caravan - More then enough room just in case I need to bring along a person or two with the drums or pack more, tinted windows so interior will be safe, great sound system.

I'm not looking for a BUY THIS or BUY THAT, just some input from people who have owned either one of these.

Thanks in advance!

Stay away from the Dodge.

What kind of Volvo is it? If its the 760, RUN! They were notorious for trans problem. 960's were decent. 850's were the best higher end Volvo for that era. If its a 240, 245 or 260 then they are tanks. Great cars.

Volvos are great for safety, which should be another top concern.

Also - does the dealership provide a warranty of any sort? If not, hopefully the parts place you work at gives employee discounts.

Yep, we get discounts for sure, all of the parts I've had to get for my last car came at a great place.

Not very sure about warranties from there though, but they are very trusting and we asked if they were good cars and the guy said they are VERY good.

When I was working for Hermann the German, he would mutter an awful lot when Volvos came in. He didn't like them one bit.

Of course, he really didn't seem to like much of anything except German cars. Wouldn't touch anything French or Italian.

I've heard that Volvos are a BITCH to work on, and expensive when it comes to parts... right down to your routine oil changes.

Ok, I sell cars for a living...

Volvo: The good: They are tanks and usually run forever, if taken care of properly.
The Bad: If they do break down, labor is outrageous because it takes forever to fix them and parts are extremely expensive.

Caravan: The good: Plenty of room and if taken care of properly, will also run forever.
The Bad: Make sure you have the transmission checked out BEFORE you buy. Most Dodge vans made in the 90's have transmission issues if they aren't regularly serviced (I used to work for a transmission shop and my bread and butter was Dodge vans).

All that being said, make sure you get a CarFax report from the dealer before you purchase either vehicle. If they offer a warranty for sale, you can negotiate the price on that, just like you would on the vehicle, itself (they make a LOT of money on the back end by jacking the price of warranties and other add ons). If they try to sell you a "protection package" (which usually includes scotch guard, undercoating and paint protectant), do not purchase it!! They will usually charge you $500-$900 for something you can get on your own for around $250-$300.

If there's anything else I can help you with in your purchase, just pm me and I'll give you my number.

Owned a Volvo, 850 sedan, loved it, wish I never got rid of it. Best car I ever owned. Got rid of it due to the outrageous labor & parts, didn't have the monies at that time (ten years ago), to keep up with it. It didn't break down at all, but even brakes and rotors with the labor was a major investment.

Had a mini van (not Dodge Caravan) Hated it, felt unsafe, will never own one again.

Peace.

Uhhh... not to sound like a dick, but please tell me you're joking with that last statement. And take wadruid's advice; PM him for his number. He speaks wisely.

NO no no, I just said that because my Dad has been friends with the owner for 30+ years.

Thank you all for the advice! I was leaning toward the van, but after the input you guys gave me I am leaning more towards the Volvo now.

My only concern is having the space in the Volvo, but it should be fine, I'll have to take another look here soon.

FUCK Fords! I used to have a 150, and the funny thing that happened was, some punks were trying to hotwire, and it caught fire and blew. It melted the back of my mom's volvo:p.

Anyone have any tips on VW's? I just got mine back yesterday after a month and a half, and it pretty much broke down again 30 minutes after I picked it up.:(

Good luck John, and like I said before, VOLVO

Fords dominate fucker!!! By the way, they own Volvo. Used to be a GM freak till I owned a few and they all went to shit, and not one damn thing has ever gone wrong with any Ford I have ever owned.

The Caravan definately should get the tranny checked before buying, along with having everything on it checked before spending loot on it.

Went to a few more places on the way home from work today, didn't see much in my budget, and I decided to look at the Caravans just in case, most were 3.0's, wonder why :D

I might get the Volvo from earlier looked at on Monday just in case.

Any good words about Subaru Outbacks? Saw one and it looked pretty nice... but I think I've heard some pretty strong negativity things about them... however I could be wrong.
