Copyright Laws?

Post by Morbid »

I made a video today which had a few different bands in it, I labeled each song to who it belonged to and posted links to each bands website. HOWEVER, once I uploaded it to YouTube I got a message saying the audio has been muted due to a Copyright Claim for "The Lotus Eater" by Opeth. There were 9 other songs that were fine, and only that one had an issue. I only used 47.23 seconds of the song.

I found this very strange since A) It (most likely) could not have been the Label because I had other Roadrunner artists in the video and B) I had Metallica.... but that had no problems :hippie:

Did I just use to much of the song? Should I cut it down? Just wondering from everyone else's knowledge what could be wrong.

Someone complained is all. Noticed it.

Thats all it takes. The scientologists are famous for yanking other peoples videos about them. Youtubes default mode is just to pull the video if anyone complains about it. Put it up again under a different title and see what happens.

Hmm, makes sense then, I found it strange though that RIGHT when it uploaded I got the message, no one could have even watched it for the short time it was up.

Warner Music Group demanded that all it's proprietary material be removed from youtube. Opeth is on Roadrunner, I think, which is owned by Warner. They claimed copyright on a video I had up where we interviewed 3IOB back in 2005 because I included the Deadly Sinners video-- even though they had given me permission to use it. After they demanded all their property be removed from youtube, the 3iob video was blocked, so I took it down. That's probably what happened to your vid--somehow they are informed when their material is uploaded and encoded.
no shit... they might as well call it "tr00 br00tal kvlt satanic pr0n" or something.

What next?! Catholic Lesbians on a train?

I checked, John--Opeth is on Roadrunner, so there you have it.

Actually, even giving the bands/labels credit in a vid only helps reduce the likelihood of getting sued. Unless you have written permission to use the material, it's copyright infringement. I would be particularly careful using Metallica, any artist represented by Universal Artist Management, any material on Def American (Slayer). Also, be careful with Rob Zombie and NIN tracks.
