Wine for Ubuntu

Heya Linux bitches!
Has anyone ever used Wine on Ubuntu? I just started dicking around with it and none (so far) of the MS apps work on the damn thing. As I understand, Wine has really never worked that well on other Linux OS's.

Not really giving a fuck if I can get it to work, more of a just wondering what it can do with it. I got a test VM on a VMware server, so if it gets fucked up I can always revert back to a fresh install snapshot of the OS.

From what I understand, most of the major apps that work in wine had some tweaks contributed to the wine code to make them actually work decently. You can forget about games for the most part. (don't care myself - not a gamer) Supposedly, Photoshop doesn't explode very often in wine these days. I already use OpenOffice and Agent for email so I don't care about any MS stuff anyway.

I haven't really played with it much because the apps I use most (specifically Sony Vegas for video & audio editing) are .NET apps. The newest Vegas (9.x) is built on .NET V3 and the MONO equivalent to .NET is apparently only up to about V1 (2 is kinda Beta, I guess) In order to use Linux desktops at this point, I'd have to revert to Vegas V5 (.NET V1) and from what I understand, you have to be a rocket surgeon to get any .NET apps working in Mono anyway.

That's why I still run 7 XP desktops and one Win2k printer/scanner server. All my servers are Centos 5.x though. Nothing beats Linux in the data center.

Wine sucks and is not worth the hassle. That's my review on it.

Your best bet to run Windows apps on Linux is to run a Windows VM. Sure, that's not REALLY running Windows apps on Linux, but it works nicely. :-)

CentOS is THE OS for internet servers. No question. I am a very loyal CentOS supporter. :metal:

It's more or less about breaking Ubuntu before I break the 'ol lady's laptop.
I got 15 various VM's on three hosts just to fuck around with. My primary objective is backup/restore of VM's on disk. So whatever happens to them it really doesn't matter.
