That mosque has been there since the late 1940's. The original building it is in was built in the late 1800's. It was there before anything like the World Trade Center was even considered. It is in fact, two blocks away from the WTC site and doesn't even have a view of it. The original Mosque was damaged in the 9/11 attack by the way.

The Mosque is only a small part of what those folks want to build. It is a community center, a culinary arts school and small gymnasium. It is not designed to be anything specific to Islam itself. The only reason the wingnuts oppose it is because they are a bunch of reactionary neochristianist jingoes. If the tealiban assholes oppose it, I'm all for it.
