Not that I know a lot about it, but I've REALLY been wanting to spend some time with Ableton Live... Check it.

Ableton is extremely popular. Reason is pretty good too.

Toontrack's EZDrummer is the shizz... :metal:

I've got the Drumkit From Hell, Vintage Kit, Twisted Kit, Latin Percussion, Pop/Rock Kit, and Nashville kit. Fun for HOURS!

Each kit has it's own editable beats/grooves. So you can grab one that sounds close enough to what you're going for, and add/subtract the hits you hear. There is a humanizing function to give it a more natural feel, changing the velocity of the hits, etc...

Meshuggah's Catch Thirtythree album was all Drumkit From Hell software.
