Who is the high priest of tubedom these days?

Post by soundguy »

Even though I used to have respectable electronics chops, I don't have the parts, the room, or the time to devote to doing rebuilds and such anymore. I've seen recommendations for shops and particular guys recommended here in the past, but things change and people come and go. Can anyone point to the current best place overall for repairs, rebuilds, & hotrodding of vintage tube gear?

The heads I want to have worked on are a Sunn 100S and a Marshall JCM 900. Both sorta work but need recapping, repotting, and some cosmetic/restorative stuff. There are a few missing parts on the Sunn, so it's probably going to be best if I can find an established shop with some carcasses laying around. There's nothing more metal than robbing the dead.

What ya got, bitches?

I'm not the best, but I've been digging into quite a few amps lately and love a challenge.

I take that back. I am the best, and am also planning on dropping chemical weapons on Skippy.
What series is the JCM 900? Do you have the schemmies?

The Marshall is model 4100 - 100 watt, hi gain, dual reverb. I gots no papers.

I seem to remember buying the schematic for the Sunn on eBay about a decade ago, but I have no idea where it is at the moment. (might have dreamed it anyway) That one really needs a Sunn dealer because it has some hardware issues. IIRC, one of the mounting ears on the power transformer is broken. Probably needs a new tranny shell. Pretty sure it snapped off on a drunken 2:00am truck load at The Black Dog around '79 or '80. Still works though. Gotta love tubes.

Found both sets of schems. http://www.mercurymagnetics.com/pages/c ... M_sunn.htm
This place has new transformers for a grip o' cash. They also restore old transformers:

Actually, if your amp looks alot like this: http://sunn.ampage.org/site/museum/100s/67100s2.jpg then I'd think that anyone with transportation to to the hardward store would be able to fix the mounts on the tranny.

Looks like you'd probably want to mod the existing 2-wire plug for a 3-wire, too- if you haven't already.
