Anyone do Anime?

Post by Latte Thunder » Fri Dec 28, 2001 8:26 pm

I recently got back into this whole anime thing and discovered some recent fansubs I think are worth mentioning to this group.

Keep your eyes peeled for the following fansubs:

FLCL (aka Furi Kuri) - probable one of the weirdest anime I've ever seen. The animation is manic and the story is extremely surreal. I'm three episodes into it and I still don't know much about what's going on outside of a 12 year old kid who keeps growing bizarre animal parts in each episode, a girl who may or may not be from outer space and a medical technology company that looms over a small Japanese town.

Hellsing - Wicked violent, bloody stuff. In modern day England a covert agency called Hellsing dispatches a cold killer to hunt vampires and legions of zombies. Really cool stuff.

Read or Die - Weird name for a really cool anime. A secret Japanese agency hires out a task force made up of people gifted with strange abilities. Most notably, the main character, a bibliophile who can control anything made of paper. They go up against a conspiracy headed up by a group who is cloning dead super villans. Sounds kind of lame, but the execution is flawless.

Hmm, all three sound like something I'd be very interested in seeing. Where did you get them? I've been longing for a good anime zombie flick for awhile.

I've been watching a pretty steady stream of anime myself recently. For about 2 weeks there I watched nothing but Evangelion, which after a slow start, just blew me away. I completely loved it.

Now I've been watching the D&D-styled Record Of Lodoss War, which is also very good. I like a good Sword and Sorcery story now and again. Image

Have you seen any of the recent Getter Robo stuff? As a Starvengers fan from back in the day (Starvengers was just the US title of Getter Robo G), you may not care too much for it. There were just too many changes for me to cope with. Dr. Copernicus went mad after the death of his daughter, Ceres, and is now some weird evil entity who can regenerate his body. Little Joey turned out to be a girl. Paladdin seems to border on good and evil now. The only one who is still mostly as I remember him is Foul Tip. As far as the anime itself, it's strictly action-oriented which I find a little boring. However, the new Shin Getter 1 is a really cool looking robot if you haven't seen him yet.

ps-Most of what I just told you may seem like spoilers, but it's all revealed from the getgo. It must have happened on some show after Starvengers that wasn't aired here. If you decide to watch it, it won't ruin it for you. Image

I haven't seen Starvengers in a wicked long time, like since before Fox was the uber network it is now, back when it was a local UHF station. Like way back when... However, this is something you might get a kick out of. There's this place in Salem, Mass called Harrion's Comics. I swear to god this place is a geek's Mecca. Aside from being a blazingly cool comic store they stock a lot of Japanese import stuff. They had one of those 24" Mazingers on display. I didn't catch a price. It looked fucking awesome.

I get all of my anime via IRC. I've been chlling in the various anime channels on Dalnet, but I have a few internet pals who run public FTPsand they let me leech constantly. If you log on to irc.dynamix.com and join #anime there's a couple of folks in there who host anime only FTPs and they're chock full of goodness.

I have the first Evangelion DVD and I loved it, but I haven't had the chance to get the rest. I have the feature End of Evangelion but I can't watch it until I finish the main series since it finishes the series off.

Mostly I download these in DivX format, convert them to MPG and then burn them to VCD. I've been going nuts with all these things lately. I've amassed a pretty decent collection of fansubbed anime lately. My VCD collection is growing steadily.

Geez, what are you doing posting so late, I always thought you posted mostly from work or something!? Image Anyway, I think I've heard of that Harrion's place as there was a comic shop from Salem selling a Dragun Jumbo on eBay a month or two ago only it was repainted in the exact color scheme of the Star Dragon from Starvengers. It looked awesome. For your future financial well-being, as well as state of mind, I must highly recommend you don't look at any Jumbos. If you start collecting, there's no way to stop and you will stop at nothing to get more and more and more.....Might I suggest a crack habit instead? lol

I heard that there was a Evangelion movie that was done b/c the real ending was so unpopular but I haven't seen it. The last 2 episodes of the series are pretty terrible, but they don't detract from the rest of it too much. It's just extra nonsense they should have left out, y'know? Psychological mumbo-jumbo...

Cool, I'll have to take a look at those places you mentioned tomorrow.

I tried to go to that site, but there didn't seem to be anyway to actually get to the rooms so I gave up. I know next to nothing about these things and once things start to look like work, I want no part of it! lol

I've had the whole week off and I've been going nuts, staying up to ricoculous hours downloading anime and shit... so there I was.

To do the IRC thing you need an IRC client like mIRC. I've been on that for years. At first it's a pain in the ass to learn, but if you come from a UNIX or even a DOS bakcground, it's pretty easy to pick up. It's just not a very intuitive client to use.

To make things easier in your hunt for anime, I suggest a client called Direct Connect. It's like Napster, only people practically use it for nothing but warez and video. There are several HUGE anime servers where you can find anything else you need.

I recently came on to another anime called Initial D that I never thought I would have liked but it's quite cool. It's all about illegal street racing and these teams from different towns. It's neat, but very long winded. I'm into the 5th episode and they still haven't established the major plot elements. It's looking really good too.
