I don't know much about this story. It's Danny Boyle's next movie and from a teaser that's happening somewhere around the web (I don't think the movie has a website yet) it's a movie not unlike The Crazies or Dawn of the Dead with some Omega Man thrown in for good measure.

I can't wait for this one.

Anyone know anymore about it?

Oh yeah, I read a description about the opening 20 minutes of this movie which is pretty much revealed in that teaser. Seems to start the way that RESIDENT EVIL ended, which for me was the best part of that ho-hum flick.

I think LIFEFORCE was the last time we got to see London face the apocalypse so, whey hey, bring it on. Pommy bastards...

I nearly got to see this when I was in London. I couldn't convince my wife to go, and we were loaded down with shit from our shopping spree... hopefully it makes it's way to DVD soon. There's a lot of good press on this movie.

It probably is R2 because I think this movie is finally getting a limited stateside release right now. I saw the US trailer posted at apple's trailer page.

I still badly want to see how this turned out.

I finally caught it and I have this to say:

It's almost a total rip off of Day of the Dead... right down to a character resembling Bub.

Maybe I liked it a lot, because I also happen to like Day of the Dead a lot. So the story goes... Militant animal rights activists break into an animal experimentation lab to free some monkeys, but when they do, they inadvertantly unleash a plague of rage on the human race. Infected victims are abruptly possessed with an uncontrollable need to kill all life (and projectile vomit blood). They become rabid and tear living beings apart. The disease is spread by blood contact and saliva, so it's pretty easy to become infected by bite. We're introduced to our hero, Jim, when he wakes up alone in a deserted hospital. He leaves to discover that London is a ghost town (these scenes are great... Remember deserted Times Square in Vanilla Sky? It was that cool). Eventually he finds some infected people and is narrowly rescued by two other uninfected people and zany hilarity ensues (okay, not really). There are more survivors, a smattering of infected and then a military rescue station that turns out to be worse than facing the hordes of insane killing machines (this is when it becomes exactly like Day of the Dead).

I liked the movie quite a bit. It's got style, it's got buckets of blood, it's got a fail safe story about human nature and behavior sans authority. The only thing that I felt it lacked was more of the infected. They were a truely terrifying presence. Unlike the shuffling dead of Romero's zombie flicks, these killers move fast, shrieking and howling. When you catch a glimpse of them, it's pretty intimidating.

Also, calling it a zombie movie is not entirely accurate. This is more like The Crazies in terms of the monsters than the Dead movies. You can definitely feel the Romero influence (even without the near plagiarism at the second half).

Yeah, I'd say these infected loons are like the ones in RABID only much more fucking crazy and consequently, scary. If there was a zombie olympics, these ones would beat both RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD and CITY OF THE WALKING DEAD's prized athletes, hands down ('cept for maybe in the more disciplined events). But because they're so damn energized, their ferocity is chilling.

I AM LEGEND definitely springs to mind in the opening sequence where our main man strolls amongst the vast city scapes of London with nary a soul in sight. The first half of the movie is great stuff but the second half gets a little routine. Like Latte says, it is all very DAY OF THE DEAD.

They do some interesting things with it, however, but ultimately it has been done before and I wish they'd built more on what they had established rather than reconceptualizing the plot half way through and investing itself in a slew of new characters.

But I didn't let that stop me from savouring the brutal and horrific moments which are most tantalizing. Good stuff.

Like you guys said, the infected are VERY cool but maybe should have been shown more. Not longer shots, but more often. The quick editing really works here. You never really get a grip on what they are, only that they're damn aggressive.

I thought this flick was great until the point where it´s revealed that the soldiers were mere thugs looking for some pussy. From that part on i think it lost everything. Suddenly i felt like our hero was invincible. He just wasn´t gonna die, no matter what he'd face next.

Too bad they didn´t have the budget to show us some devastation from Manchester. that would have been a riot!

I just got a chance to see this one at a special sneak peak here in SF. A friend of a friend of a friend knows some one who knows someone...Well anyway, I got in.

This fucker rocks. I can't really add much here that hasn't been said. But I would like to point out one thing I don't think anyone has touched on here.

This fucker was shot on Video! And I was fooled. They ran it through that Magic Bullet software. It really does make video look like film. It changes the frames, the colors, that flat glossy video look is GONE ect. I had no idea I was watching something that was shot with a ten thousand dollar video camera... you can go here for some info on the software and shit. http://www.theorphanage.com/
Film will be DEAD in a few years...

I'd heard it was shot on DV.

I've been wanting to borrow my dad's Cannon XL1 for some time to do some shooting, but most of the stuff I've seen of his has that video look.

I'll have to look into it.

I love the look of film but I don't understand how so many people in the industry can lament DV technology when ultimately it empowers the filmmaker. If it wasn't for DV, I doubt this flick would have ever been made - processing costs are a considerable expense for any picture. Its a boost for independant production and enables movies with a larger scope, such as this, to be made outside of Hollywood.

Latte, I'm working on a movie now, some friends and I invested in the Magic Bullet software a few months back. It does fucking wonders for Digital Video. Not just a film look, but you have total and complete control over colors and the overall look of the picture. Its like a built in cinematographer. If you shoot under good light with a decent lighting kits, you would be amazed at what you can do in the computer with your footage. After dicking with the cost and problems of 16mm for the last 3 years, I gave up, but this is the answer. Hands down. Its the future... 28 days later is just a small example. Its fucking killer shit. When you are actually able to really "see" 28 days (other than the downloaded crap copies that are floating around) you'll see what I mean.

I want to tell everyone about my movie, but I'm waiting for the right time. Very soon, I'll be making the web site live and I'll let everyone know about it. If all goes well we'll be unleashing it at Fantasia in 2004...

I liked it a lot and plan on checking it out on the big screen when it gets it's ONE screen in Seattle. I think it starts the 28th. I am going to hold off until the domestic DVD release to purchase it though. I'd say more but have to save my words for reviews :)
