Just finished watching this one a minute ago and it was all it was cracked up to be. I'm no expert on martial arts films by any means, but this one seemed pretty kick ass to me. All the crazy ass stunts of a Jackie Chan film with the ferocity of Bruce Lee. I've never seen anyone put their knees and elbows to such devastating use as Phanom Yeerum does. I had heard that several people were hurt pretty bad during the making of this film and I don't doubt it for a second. Hell, I only watched it and I feel like I need to ice down my body. The finishing move at the end alone really leaves a mark. Action/ martial arts fans simply have to see this one, even though it has such a basic plot. Bad guys steal village treasure, good guys try to reclaim it. Much fighting ensues. But wow, what fighting!

Fucking great movie, I've seen it twice within the last week. I ended up buying an unsubbed DVD after watching a subbed boot VHS just to give a little back to the people who made the movie. I wonder if this is ever gonna get a US release?

Ong Bak is getting a US release, but it will be cut. Luc Besson (who the director hid a message for w/in the film) has picked up the worldwide rights and is recutting the film. I'm not sure who the US distributor is yet.

The reason to get the uncut version is because of that NASTY elbow break. THe leg break that follows is also missing from all but the Thai prints. So these scenes are cut even before Besson's got his scissors out. I've heard there is a legit, uncut, subbed DVD coming out in Singapore, but I'm happy with the boot I've got for now.

I watched it on a DVD-R that a friend of mine got from bit-torrent. It has subs and judging from what you just said, appears to be uncut (ie, it has the arm and leg breaks you mention).

Yeah, my DVD is actually pressed, but it's from a somewhat shady seller, so I was hesitant to plunk down on it. I'm glad I did. Especially since it's unlikely that we'll get a better version with English subs for a LOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNG time. It's also got quite a few extra features, including where to find the director's messages to Besson and Spielberg) but everything is in Thai. THere is a really cool bonus demo of Jaa fighting some guys that I liked a lot (and it goes w/o the slow mo of the film proper).

The unsubbed HK DVD has both of the leg breaks, I think that might be why the box has a Cat III rating on it. Thanks a lot for hooking me up with the tape Devon!

Speaking of Catagory III ratings...what the hell is with Catagory III? I watched...uhm, I think it was Nightmare. That's a IIb, but has prominent photos of the Son of Sam murders. But then there's Bloody Beach which doesn't have much gore, and it's a III. What the hell? It's gotten really inconsistent.
