I'm sorry but it didn't "translate" well for me... I think the JuOn films in their original state provide much better scares then the American version did.

PS... Remind me NEVER to go and see a PG-13 movie unless it's like on a Monday afternoon

Just as the American RING had to drag things out with too many details (I could have lived without a single bit of that "horse" nonsense), THE GRUDGE falls prey to the need to EXPLAIN--hence, a new wraparound with a new character... I shouldn't say more, but you'll know what I mean right away.

If I'd never seen the original, I would still have rated this "pretty good," as the director obviously knows how to play shock moments and build a creepy mood. Still, I was sorry to see that some of the scariest material in JU-ON was not represented in this remake.

This is not a "bad" movie, it doesn't sell out to Hollywood cheese, and it certainly knows how to scare the crap out of its intended audience.

Ah, but we saw the original on the big screen in far more intimate surroundings, and that was just flat out TERRIFYING for a family that walked in cold. The three of us that saw that also attended THE GRUDGE together--it was better than we thought it would be, but none of us found it up to the standard previously set. And, of course, how could we? We knew where all the jumps were going to be... most of them, anyway--there IS a surprise or two, thankfully.

Can't switch to low-carb beer when you're used to the real thing. But this'll be a hit, regardless...

The US remake is better dammit. A minimal amount of "Bing-Bings" and no subtitles!

Not a bad effort and it was fun to see it with an audience that was constantly having the shit scared out of them.

It's quite sad really. Americans having to rely on other Countries for ideas. I haven't seen the remake and have no desire too. I didn't like the first one all that much to begin with though I admit it had some nice scares.

The problem with American audiences is you HAVE TO explain everything to them. There are a few in a little commune little census that can watch a film without having every little thing transcribed to them. Reminds me of HARRY POTTER, yeah, it's for kids but for cry in out loud must we be reminded of some key element in the film over and over again? I didn't see the last one but the one before it felt that way. Same goes for LORD OF THE RINGS, while I admit I'm not a fan (but think Jackson is a great director) and enjoyed the eye candy, I just found it annoying and relentless. I get the fact that people have short attention spans but geeze man, cut a few snippets here and there and let the dam audience use their brains for a change!

Can you imagine what the so-called "final" installment of the STAR WARS films are going to be like?

Okay ya there were a few subtitles but 99% of the film is in English.
I admit I'm prejudice against Asian films. I'm just sick of the "Asian fever". Everyone has that bug it seems, and its annoying...So give me an Asian movie starring cheesy white people and I'm all over it!

Question. The original came out like 3 years ago right (maybe more?) but the little boy looks exactly the same. But the boy would be much older now. Is it the same kid? An actor that looks like him? Or did they digitally place the boy's scenes in the new movie? Anyone know?

For the most part Asians age well... until they hit that wall and it all seems to catch up with them.

As for the film... I don't mind remakes as long as it's good and I didn't think this one was.

It wasn't that great, and still don't give a flying fuck if I ever see the Ju-on version. The moral of the story is, stay away from asians, they are scary and fucked up.

Haha just joking, but I still don't ever want to go to Japan or wherever the hell it was.

I dont know man some of those asians chicks in ju-on were pretty fucking hot, I havent seen the american one yet but if it has more revealing shots of hot asian chicks, I'm down.

Another observation and gripe I had with this movie was the absolute garbage editing. It was obvious to me that this began as an R rated movie and was slashed down to a PG-13. The torn-off jaw was on screen almost long enough to tell what it was when they pointed it out, as was Yoko, sans jaw. The other edit that bugged me severely was toward the end after Buffy goes through Bill Pullman's involvement in the plot and you hear that banging on the wall. You're given some very bad shots as to what the banging noise on the wall is, but you're never shown what it is.

It's a scene from the Ju-On sequel where the little boy is banging a body, hung by a noose, into the wall. The body's feet continually hit the wall, making the noise, but the editing was so awful in these parts that you never got to see what it was. It's too bad, it's one of the only chilling scenes from the Ju-On sequel.

Still haven't seen the sequel...

I noticed that too that they took bits from the various version of the JuOn films... such as the jaw part that you mentioned.

A problem that I had with it was... what was the need for her having a bf? Or was that just to establish her living in Japan? I don't know, I really didn't care for it... I thought it could of been a whole lot better then what it actually was.

I also can't stand the way she sounds when she speaks... sounds like she has a nose full of boogers all the time.

I just got back from seeing this tonight. I still prefer Ju-On to this one although I'll give Shimizu credit for not "Americanizing" the film by turning it into a cheesefest. This film would've been utter shit if Sam Raimi handed the directing key to some commercials hotshot.

I AGREE! Glad I'm not the only one. I find most Asian horror flicks rather dull for the most part. I don't object so much to subtitles but they have the most bizarre censorship rules over there. Watching an Asian porno is pointless and what's the deal with all the fuzzy wuzzy shit when it comes to showing nudity? They have no problem blowing up bodies to kingdom come, doing some of the sickest shit imaginable on screen (example ICHI THE KILLER) and they can get pretty freaking nasty with torture and shit. If you can go that far than what's up with the nudity?

Another gripe is that it's just getting to over-blown. They keep releasing shit with fancy poster art and the film bores you to tears. I've seen so many flicks like this and either fell asleep or tossed the disc on e-bay. I lost interest especially after the big fuck up mistake that was BATTLE ROYALE II. Man, what a mis-directed, obnoxious, arrogant and DRAWN OUT movie. At least the first one was entertaining and had a point. The second was so blantaly obvious during that dumb scene (if you haven't seen it and want too I won't spoil it) at the end it felt as the movie and culture itself was islotating itself from other parts of the world.

Battle Royale II to me felt very anti American...
I was stoked that Kitano was going to be in it again... only to be disappointed that his appearance lasted all of 5 min (IF that). Battle Royale II was a huge disappointment after seeing the first one...

I thought it seemed pointless to make an Americanized version of this movie if it is still set in Japan and had the same director. I am sure that a totally American version would have sucked but at least it would feel like there was some point to it. It seemed like way too much of a stretch for the story to have so many Americans be in Japan and all get wrapped up with the house. I would have rather had Sam Raimi just pay to get all of the Ju-On movies properly released in the US on DVD or something. It seems kind of pointless to like something enough to go to the trouble of producing a re-make and then changing some of the key elements that made the original slightly believable. I didn't really dig on Ju-On that much though so I don't know what I am talking about...

I believe Lions Gate has the rights to the JuOn films and should be putting them out soon... least that's what I had read a ways back. The original The Grudge is still doing it's arthouse theater tour. I know it's still playing up here at Tower.

well I am sure that the grudge and SAW can't compare to a huge picture of Rawhead Rex.
