Well, they're not AS consistently gory, but try and dredge up LIGHTNING KUNG FU and/or THUNDERING MANTIS for a start--they've got some nice surprises.

5 Elements Ninja (aka Superninjas aka Chinese Superninjas) is outrageously bloody for a Shaw Brothers flick

The recent Azumi, by Ryuhei Kitamura (the guy who directed Versus) is also pretty bloody. It's nothing on the scale of Versus, but there's gallons of that samurai "spraying wound" blood as every slice seems to unleash a torrent of arterial spray.

Azumi is a really good movie,ive seen that one already.

Ninja Wars just got a DVD release recently. It's maddeningly incoherent BUT! it features a ninja whose special ability is to projectile vomit acid. There's also some decent decapitations.

Not violent or bloody(sorry) but a damn good movie is Drunken Thai Chi. Fuckin ridiculous.

You could try MUSA, a pretty decent Korean period epic from 2001. Plenty of violent skirmishes over its 2.5 hour running time as a buncha exiled Korean diplomats escort a rescued Ming princess across the lands of China whilst fending off several deadly attacks from her Mongolian captors. It all culminates in a modest but impactful siege on an abandoned fortress that makes a refreshing change from such overwhelming sequences in THE LORD OF THE RINGS, TROY, etc... Infact, the whole movie embraces a historical and worldly realism, essentially eschewing the fantastic (but perhaps not the melodramatic) and doesn't flinch - giving us plenty of decapitations, amputations and impalements (in that popular blink-and-you'll-miss-it fashion) in the process. Falls a little short of greatness but definitely worth checking into if you're into violent/bloody kung fu and or samurai movies - which an obese homosexual man tells me you are.

Apparently some versions are missing 30 minutes so be cautious should you decide to seek this one out.

MUSA? I don't think so. The only alternate title I know of is MUSA THE WARRIOR which doesn't really make sense since 'musa' is Korean for 'warrior'. Its got that Ziyi Zhang bird in it, if that's any help.

Now, has anyone seen another Korean period martial arts/swordplay number, BICHUNMOO? I caught the trailer for this and from what I saw its definitely got potential.

I saw Bichunmoo after the forums at Kung Fu Cult Cinema unanimously declared it the Crouching Tiger killer, but I thought it was kind of boring. I never finished it and sold it back to the store I bought it from. Maybe I missed some big time redeeming qualities toward the end, but it never grabbed me. While it doesn't have the big Shaw Brothers styled fight scenes that Crouching Tiger had, it came off more like a period epic in the vein of Braveheart with huge battles.

It's tough to find excessively violent kung fu movies since it was never a big trend in Hong Kong to shed so much blood. Kung fu flicks were always supposed to be appropriate on a PG rating scale which made them appropriate for most viewers, making them very profitable. Samurai movies, on the other hand, have always been bloodbaths. I recently got a bootleg of Miike's movie Izo, which is sorta kinda a samurai movie in that it's main character is a samurai reincarnated through several periods. However, the only subtitled copies exist in a fansub being sold on Ebay. It's as bloody as you might expect coming from Miike, though.

Ill have to check the Miike flick out.

Checked BICHUNMOO out for myself and I'm here to say it stinks. Everything about it is laborious, from the plotting and acting right down to the horrid overuse of left-right/right-left camera tilting for every shot during the fighting scenes, ruining the choreography.

I found one of the worst (but in a good way) kung fu flicks of all time, which is hard to find, but soooooo classic! It is called "Deadly Hands of Kung Fu", and it is a crap fest with a difference. It is the epic tale of Bruce Lee, who has gone to Hell, and has to fight against it's the evil ruler. But along the way he will encounter Popeye, Caine from Kung-Fu, 007, The Man With No Name (aka Clint Eastwood), Zatoichi, Emmanuelle, and others. He even fights as Kato at one point if I remeber correctly. Also, another crappy one is Raw Force, which is an American flick that will never be on DVD, but feature undead martial artists, fighting a group of sightseeing living martial artists. It's fun, and has a great line (in the background) about McDonald's hamburgers being made from Kangaroo meat.
