Night Train To Terror

Post by DylanDog »

Another one of those so bad, it's good movies. But imo, this one was better than good. It was downright scrumtralascent! God and Satan are on a train debating who goes to heaven and hell. Three situations, taken from other horror movies, are shown.

The first has a hospital where the staff are killing all the patients, who really aren't patients so much as adbucted girls. This one is nuts and easily the bloodiest of the bunch. You also see the most skin here. Richard Moll is awesome in this. He should be in more movies. (from the movie "Scream Your Head Off" aka "Marilyn Alive and Behind Bars")

In the second, a group of people engage in elaborate versions of Russian roulette. They release a cheesy as all hell stop-motion poisonous insect just to see who among them it will bite. The best part has some machine that will shock each member of "the Death Wish Club" to some extent, with one person receiving a fatal dose of electricity. This scene has my favorite line of the movie. (from the movie "The Death Wish Club")

The third, and weakest, segment is about a devil on earth in human form. This one features Nazi's and more terrible, terrible stop motion effects. (From the movie "Cataclysm")

After viewing each segment, God and Satan decide on who goes where, but not before the 80s teenage rock band in the next room play the same song over and over and breakdance!

I'd always considered 1985 the single best year for horror films. This gem just confirms it for me. I'll have to buy this dvd and check out the complete films someday, though I suspect each would be much easier to take in the condensed versions shown here.

There's no such thing as a "complete" version of SCREAM YOUR HEAD OFF, but that didn't stop somebody from cobbling together a tape release which jumps from normal footage to workprint footage to narrated NIGHT TRAIN TO TERROR clips at the drop of a hat... it's one of the most incomprehensible things out there (but you do get to see Richard Moll playing the bongos).

DEATH WISH CLUB (or whatever they want to call it--I've never seen a print of the film that didn't have a videoburned title) is one of the most surreal and outlandish items I've ever encountered, and NIGHT TRAIN doesn't come close to capturing its effect (come on--didn't you wonder once why the heroine was suddenly dressed as a man during the "electric chair" sequence--or why the hero suddenly wanted her out of his life "once and for all?"). Don't pass up an opportunity to see this one. "I'm a fish! I'm a fish!"

And CATACLYSM you've probably seen--hey, you've got Cameron Mitchell, no?

The common thread is Phillip Yordan (who plays the other audience member in the DEATH WISH CLUB segment when the hero is watching the porno movie). Look his credits up sometime... he was behind everything from Humphrey Bogart's last film (THE HARDER THEY FALL) to DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS.

NIGHT TRAIN is one hell of a Yordan hodgepodge--but yes, it's very much worth the effort to see the original versions, too.

Cool, glad to know the individual releases are worthy as well. I suspected that at least a few members of the board had seen this, but must admit to being a little surprised you also saw all the separate movies. Although knowing you, I should have known better than that! But it makes me wonder what other little gems from the past you guys may have seen that don't get much discussion?
