The Ring

Post by Griff [Mola] »

Hey kids, I've been hearing good stuff about his remake so I thought I'd pass this on:

http://www.buzztone.com/ring_screen/

Check out the above link to possibly score free tickets to a showing near you. Worked for me but its playing in my current area tonight and I won't be able to make it (anyone live near Providence with a car? And some beers?). Anyway, there's probably a good chance you'll score too, if interested.

I'm glad to be hearing good buzz on this movie. Reviews of screening have been turning up positive all over the place. I guess you can't go wrong even remaking a Nakata movie.

Aahh... still haven't seen it Mr. D? That's what you get for spending all your pocket money on trash like Swimfan! Sorry, can't help you out - I left my collection at home - but if you don't have any luck elsewhere, I know there's a copy floating around on Kazaa (just search for 'ringu').

Hodgy - glad it worked for you. Enjoy the movie.

No... that's what I get for living in an area where the original RING doesn't play theatrically!

These days, I'm pretty much tied down to what plays theatrically, what Watchdog sends me to review and what catches my eye in the store... I simply don't have time to deal with mail order (nor do I have a multi-region player). But I'm happy to do trades when the opportunity arises.

LOL.....now now Griff, that's no way to talk to our resident reviewer;) We have all paid to see trash at one point or another. Can we honestly plop down money on every feature that comes to town hoping it will be a classic? Like Remo, I live in a secluded area myself where we don't even get "limited releases" so I am also stuck with whatever is playing at the local multiplexes. Yes there is a lot of trash that has been coming out lately, but I recently caught a few (RED DRAGON and TRAPPED) that actually surprised me and I'm glad I spent money on those instead of obvious crap like SWEET HOME ALABAMA or BROWN SUGAR.

As for RING, I have never seen the original either but I did see a trailer for the remake and it did look promising. I'll probably check it out if it comes to town, but I am also looking forward to GHOST SHIP and hope it is better than FEAR.COM.

Yeah, I was just teasin' Remo because it seemed that in his valiant pursuit of enduring all cinema releases (for better or for worse) in order to be an informed critic - and fan - he's missing out on some of the good stuff, only available on (import) video!

But please, no preaching about what movies come to your town, fellas. I'm from Perth, Western Australia, 'the most isolated city in the world' and half of your multiplex wonders don't even make it to my multiplex. Its a sad case of import, trade or perish, for the most part.

Hmmm... not much out there in the cinemas. I'll see THE RING if things work out but the only definite must-see for me is RULES OF ATTRACTION then it'll be the small screen for me until THE TWO TOWERS, at least that I can foresee.

Geez, Griff, I thought for sure you'd be first in line for SWEPT AWAY.

Not much on the big screen heh? I take it Mick Molloy's bowling club tale CRACKERJACK isn't getting a massive worldwide release in November then?

RULES... isn't supposed to open around my way until mid November. Unfortunately Bret Easton Ellis adaptions are 0 and 2 as far as I'm concerned and it's my least favourite of his fucked up richboy trilogy, but this won't keep me away. I wonder what rating it'll receive in Oz, it'd be cool if the original cut was released but I doubt it'll happen.

Oh man, Malloy has made a film? Trust the Aussies to do something interesting while I'm outta town. There's also some movie based on schoolies coming out that looks like a laugh with larrikinism run amok. But I'm sure UNDEAD will still be looking for distribution for a while to come and Alex Proya's GARAGE DAYS doesn't really interest me, dispite some (uncredited?) dialogue contributions to the script by ex-Horrornews regular, Kelpie242 (aka Anthony O'Connor). Too many destestable 'alternative' hip musician type characters in that one. I'll wait for video. Well, I'm gonna have to anyway.

Um, no, I'm not a fan of Easton Ellis adaptions either but I am of KILLING ZOE and a bunch of unproduced Roger Avary scripts that I've perused. Oh, and of course there's PULP FICTION and the various other contributions the guy has made to Tarantino's work. I've been following the development of this flick via his online journal for the past year and a half so I may as well see the final product.

I read that the full length 'European' cut would be submitted to Australian censors for approval. Who knows?

Sadly, I fear I will pass from this life into the next without ever seeing SWEPT AWAY...

Went to see the Ring last night. Having not seen the original, all I knew was 1) it was free. 2)That hot chick from Mullholland Drive was in it.
Here's what I know now.
1) That chick from Mullholland drive looks great with longer hair, but the film could definitely benefitted from a lesbian sex scene.
2) The Ring had some great tension building up and was pretty creepy in parts, but it unfortunatly did not follow through with the 'one-two slammy slam' I was looking for. Damn shame, 'cause they coulda gone so much further.
3) It was fun watching a movie based in Seattle IN Seattle, with a Seattle crowd, who more or less laughed throughout the movie. Gotta give some propers to my adopted home.
4)I'm not too sure if this movie was good or not. Parts of it were Really good, and some were difficult to get through.
5)That chick from Mullholland Drive shoud've gotten naked. At least twice.
6) I didn't really understand the ending where Jennifer Love Hewitt makes an appearance as a young Clarice Starling and...oh shit, I thought I was somebody else there for a second. Sorry.

About the Ring remake,it seems to be getting good advanced press overseas as well. Must at least be a watchable remake. Who the fuck would have thought it would be decent? As theatrical releases go, some U.S homevideo companies like Media Blasters are getting into the theatrical game, so things might get a little better. The Scarlet Diva just finished playing up here.(It was okay, recommended for Asia buffs, exclusively, though)

Remo, just a friendly suggestion, you really should consider getting a multi region DVD player. There's a whole shit load of great foreign(Yeah,a lot of crap, too)stuff out there. Some of it makes the wait for mailorder well, worthwhile.

Believe me, I'd like a multi-region player. Of course, there are a lot of things I'd like that raising a family around here won't quite allow for at this point. If I can make a decent book deal or some such for myself, that'll be the next step.

In the meantime, when I chime in on THE RING it will be strictly on the merits of what hits the screen, not on comparisons to the original, and not on comparisons to the supposedly much stronger version that preview audiences saw before it got cut to a PG-13...

Well, I don't know, Shawn... I did, indeed, write the full-length THEY CAME FROM JAPAN, but since Fantasma's first set of major problems came courtesy of their Godzilla book (to which I was a contributor, if not the author), I somehow doubt that he'd want that project resurrected (or else it would have to run without photos).

Besides, the ad I saw implies that Fantasma is only selling fresh copies of their previously issued books, so far.

But hey--I'm not hard to find if anyone wants me.

I don't know what your financial situation is, Remo, but just to give you an idea. I got my Daewoo player with the all-region hack for $100 and it's a killer player, better than my old Apex.

And a stronger R rated cut of the movie? Sounds promising for DVD. I was talking to a friend of mine last night who runs one of the local theaters, he's seeing it tonight and has been hearing a lot of hype about it (and he's not really the kiond of guy who keeps up on movie news sites like me). He was baffled that it was PG-13... but the original wasn't really a very strong movie content-wise. It wasn't like it had anything in it that would get an R rating. No nudity, no blood, not even a single curse word. I imagine that they've Americanized the dialog for the remake but there'd be no reason to add any grue or skin to the new one.

The word is pretty positive on this and I'm pretty excited about it.

Yeah, paint my face red--I still haven't seen the original. I get the impression, however, that this remake essentially stayed true to the basics. There's a palpable threat that it's going to turn into a warm, fuzzy family movie--all I should say is that a breath of relief was in order.

What we have currently playing on American screens--divorced of all "remake" context and the fact that it took several trims to achieve PG-13 status--is a well-crafted suspenser with several good shocks... that ultimately goes on too long and suffers some serious pacing and credibility problems (not credibility in the supernatural sense, but credibility in the sense of what the characters can get away with in the name of moving the plot along). The opening ten minutes attempt to create a prologue to reckon with... and pull it off quite nicely--I can't imagine anyone not wanting to see the rest of the story after that. Unfortunately, once the exposition takes over, the suspense gradually sifts away as the "assemble the pieces of the mystery" motif takes over. A certain climactic moment of revelation is most likely intended to be the horror highpoint--personally, I found an extremely well-simulated bit of frantic violence involving a horse much more disturbing.

Okay--it's neither a classic nor a disaster--I put it under "very good try." I'd still appreciate someone trading me a copy of the original... but I've learned enough to spit another mouthful of poison at "FearDotCom" for being a shameless, brazen RIPOFF.

Next stop--"Ghost Ship."

Even upon seeing trailers for this one, I'm puzzled at a lot of elements that appear in the trailer that I've never seen in the original Jap movie. Is this remake severely different, or take liberties with the reinterpretation?

Saw it last night.

I liked it a lot.

Better than the original in a lot of ways. The narrative remains intact, as a matter of fact, it's almost verbatim from the original plot. They added a more plausible angle with the horse/Anna Morgan story.

Went to see this one last night and it's another winner in my book. Like Shane, I haven't seen the original either (which was probably best since I would have spent more time doing comparisons than actually enjoying the movie). This was still very suspensful and had great atmosphere. Aside from a few slow moments, this one moved right along and the mystery had me hooked from the beginning. As for all of this talk about it being cut from an R to a PG-13, I can't find any info about anything being trimmed out. The IMDB claims that Chris Cooper was originally slated to play a child murderer in the film, but there is no telling whether his scenes were actually filmed. Even if anything was trimmed out (which seems doubtful), this movie probably works a lot better without all the gore IMO. Either way you look at it, this is still a recommended viewing regardless of whether or not you've seen the original.

Speaking of the original, I heard that there were three movies called RING.....1, 2 and 0. Just curious, which one was this remake based on?

Griff - yes Naomi Watts was attractive but I thought Russ Tamblyn's daughter Amber (who plays Katie in the beginning of the movie) was a real hottie:D
