I just got done checking out the web site for this one and it looks like it could be a cool movie. Steve Railsback plays Ed, which in my opinion was a good choice. Does anyone know if this sucker's gotten any US distribution yet or if it's doomed to a straight to video release?

WOW, that film looks very promising. I've always wanted a film made based directly about Ed Gein.

Apparently ED GEIN was screened at a recent festival and I read a couple of reviews that were pretty mixed. Then again, they were probably written by some nerds expecting Gein to be playing cat and mouse mind games with Morgan Freeman.

The Pommy horror mag, THE DARK SIDE, had a good article on this in a recent issue. Railsback sounded really enthusiastic about the project and I got the impression its gonna be something special. Fingers crossed.

ED GEIN definitely sounds like a good project. I may have not liked Henry 2 that much, but I do think Chuck has talent. It won the Grand Prize at Sitges 2000, which is no mean feat. Expect me to be first in line.

ONLY DEATH IS REAL

Has anyone seen this yet? I just searched the archives and didn't see any reviews posted. I watched it last night and thought it was pretty good. I'm no Ed Gein scholar or anything, but certain aspects of the film didn't quite sit right with me though. For instance, Gein is portrayed as a pretty obviously creepy guy, but I always thought that he was really just a quiet sort of chap whom everyone thought was harmless. Despite this, Steve Railsback does a fabulous job in the role. The settings are perfect as well. Gein's house looks exactly like a picture I have, right down to the detective magazines lying about. The film wasn't overtly disgusting, but instead had more of a gruesome air to it that's hard to explain. It works well though. The ending, while true to life, is somewhat anti-climatic, although the addition of Gein speaking from the hospital throughtout the credits helps, as does the inclusion of some actual crime scene footage (though nothing gory). Basically, I think this'll be one of those films that every horror fan should see, but not necessarily one that every one will like.

A friend of mine should be hauling me back a copy from the States next week so I'll be eager to check it out. So far its sounding pretty good to me.

The makers are currently in production on a follow-up, a Ted Bundy biopic. Savini's doing the effects but I doubt they'll be too extreme. I wonder who's playing Bundy...

Snuggled up to this one tonight and while its not the definitive Gein biopic I was hoping for, its still got a lot going for it. Railsback is a charmer as Eddie Gein and does a good job at filling the imaginative but troubled introvert's shoes.

The film makers seem to have concentrated more on Ed's strict upbringing by his domineering mother and its repressive effect on his social and private life after her passing than to the intricacies of the atrocities he commited behind closed doors. Alone with his thoughts rather than alone with his hands, you could say.

Sure, it subtly alludes to his disturbing nocturnal activites and although I'm sure its done with noble intentions it perhaps glosses over them a little too lightly for my liking. Its why we're here, after all, and we're never really made to feel too uncomfortable for having the nerve to show up.

There's a healthy dose of morbid atmosphere, some intriquing flashbacks to Ed's upbringing and a few chuckles to be had (depending on your sense of humour) but unfortunately some of the scenes don't build quite the suspense or pack quite the punch that you'd hoped for. Its not as immersive as I'd like it to have been and never really recreates the ghastly wonder that Ed embraced, instead portraying it as a hobby, almost independant of the man himself ...which may have been the intention.

That said, I like ED GEIN. Its not without charm as they've certainly tried to create something that transcends exploitation and instead focus' on a sympathetic character who, through his enviroment, has lost his way and tries to reclaim it in the most peculiar of fashions.

My money, however, is still on DERANGED with the wonderful Roberts Blossom for a fun night of Eddie Gein shennanigans at the movies.
