Released in America as the hugely edited RAW MEAT and shown intact for the first time in the Northwest, DEATH LINE is considered one of the best horror films of the sixties and seventies. The last surviving descendent of Victorian tunnel workers trapped by a cave-in lurks within the unexplored catacombs beneath the London Underground in this vile retelling of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (also featured in this week's schedule at the Grand Illusion Cinema). The creature occasionally emerges from the shadows in search of easily accessible (aka human) food. This disease-ridden, somewhat human-looking monster (played by Hugh Armstrong) creates hysteria when a senior government official goes missing after a night on the town. Donald Pleasance is the eccentric police inspector who investigates the disappearance.
A top favorite of genre master Guillermo del Toro (CRONOS, THE DEVIL¹S BACKBONE) and screened only once in the last 30 years in the U.S., DEATH LINE's amazingly rare engagement at the Grand Illusion is made possible by a generous loan of the single existing 35mm print from the film¹s director, Gary Sherman. As del Toro says, "DEATH LINE belongs, completely, to the real world."
