My XB360 = dead!

Have had it since launch with zero problems ... started to play FIFA 2k6 the other night and got the 3 red lights of death. When I unplugged everything (followed all the advice online) and got it back on, I got a nice checker board pattern on my screen with a freeze up, now it wont fire up at all.

Good thing I got the extended warrentee. M$ is mailing me a box, then I sent it in, then they "fix" it (hopefully RMA it) and then mail it back.

TRANSLATION

No XB360 for Drew for 2-3 wks - FUCK ME! Guess its been happening a lot lately where the system will work fine for 3-4 months then the GPU burns out or something. Read that M$ is now using a different setup to eliminate further problems. DAMNED LAUNCH HARDWARE!!!!!!

Yuck...

You are one of the unlucky ones. From what I've heard, these problems aren't as abundant as the hype made them out to be, and nowhere near as bad as Sony when it comes to first gen systems. Sucks tho, gotta kick it old school for a few weeks.

Sorry to hear that Drew. I am glad that it is getting taken care of.

Chris, do they send out new Xboxes to the customers and refurbish the broken ones for future testing? I recall doing some passes on refurbed returned boxes a couple years back.

No idea, maybe they sell them to retailers, Gamestop has both refurbished and used Xbox and PS2 consoles. I don't have much exposure to the hardware side of things :)

Mon - 5/08/06 - Called support, to send shipping box
Wed - 5/10/06 - They send shipping box
Mon - 5/15/06 - Shipping box arrives, I immediately return it.
Thu - 5/18/06 - Support receives my 360
Fri - 5/19/06 - Fixed and sent back to me (3 day ground as with all above)
Wed - 5/24/06 - Date to get my 360 back

Not bad, ... the 3 day shipping makes it lame. Will let you know if they fix it or replace it.

Did you copy your profile to a memory unit to keep your savegames?

I sent it without the HDD. They said I should be OK. I think there is some shit stored on internal ROM so hopefully they just swapped out my GPU and sent it back.

"So that you can get back to playing and enjoying your Xbox 360 quicker, we have replaced your Xbox console with a replacement unit".

Sent a core, got a core back (have my HDD). It has a nice lil ding on the front that MY unit didnt .... however it fired right up, is downloading all the demos I missed, and will be hopefully running smoothly when I fire up some gamez!!

FYI

After close to a year my 360 has died. No warning signs at all. MS is providing free repairs on all consoles manufactured in 2005 so that's cool. I'm going to go to costco and get and new one today and return it when my repaired/new unit arrives :)

Did the hard drive just go tits up or is it the console itself?

ive had 3 ps2's dick out on me since launch and one xbox dick out as well... my current xbox i bought for 50 bucks from the videogame store next door to my business, it came in to them modded, and they didnt realize that it was modded til after they had bought it from the guy who sold it to them, so they sold it to me cheap and i can play pirated games. SCORE!

Console. If it was the hard drive I would die...

I got a new job at MS (Zune division) and mosta our engineers/techs are from the Xbox team. They said that the most common problem is the first wave or two of GPU's they used are dying. The replacement ones are pretty solid, the repaired unit I got back has worked flawlessly.

Other good news, saw Guitar Hero 2 the other day from a distance and it looks KILLER!!

Good plan Chris, the 2 wk wait .... SUCKED!!!!!

Oh that's sad...that's the saddest thing I've heard all day!
I have some prozac if you like...otherwise ritilin, glucouse pills, and coffee will perk you right up.

You'll be like a candycane on crack! lol
sorry for your loss

My second 360 died tonight, 3 red lights after hard locking playing Boom Boom Rocket. If I wasn't going on a cruise to Alaska Sunday I would be off to Costco tomorrow for another "loaner." I'll do it when I get back :)

Good thing they extended the warranty for the 3red lights issue!

Coffin has been ordered from support, estimated time for "repair" is 3-6 weeks.
