Robocop uncut

Post by Rich » Sun Nov 06, 2005 6:04 pm

Couple of recent flicks I watched, here goes:

Robocop, criton or crition (sp?) edition - Revisiting this flick gave me one big kick in the nuts! The splatter was off the map! All those gore splashed gunshot and knife wounds! This version is the only version of Robocop that should be available to the public. They really trimmed this puppy, I mean I like it already but this version put it in my fav's list. This has sparked my new love affair with it. Bottom line, GET IT! Like Clarence says: "Bitches leave."

The Criterion is now out of print and fetches a fucking buttload of cash on ebay, but the present in-print DVD has the same transfer and shit. It's also uncut.

When the chips are down, really only a few seconds has been re-inserted into the uncut version. The death of Murphy and the ED-209 demonstration are the only two scenes to get their blood back, but I agree entirely. Those extra seconds really push this over the edge. It had been years since I'd watched it and earlier this year I got a bootleg of the Criterion that reinvigorated my love for the movie. It would seem that now, more than ever, the movie is relevant and could, quite possibly, be the ultimate cyberpunk movie. More than The Matrix, more than Blade Runner, even. It was doing what Neil Stephenson did with Snow Crash years ahead of time. Of course, it's a charicature of modern society and exagerrates greatly, but that's what good cyberpunk does.

I also love the ending. It gives me chills.

"What's your name, son?"

"Murphy."

ROBOCOP

cue music.

I think the extra gore makes it more like a standard Verhoven, whereas the trims made it seem slightly more realistic violence wise. The MPAA cut it and made a more disturbing movie.

The uncut boardroom scene where ED-209 goes off RULES!!! It makes that "Somebody call a paramedic" line that much funnier!

I downloaded the criterion edition on piratebay a few months ago, WOW brings back memories, used to fucking love this movie.... I love the vibe it gives off, verhoeven had a similar but less disturbing vibe in starship troopers and total recall... well total recall was pretty disturbing too.

I was sure there were a couple more scenes. The bit where Robo jams his wrist spike into clarences throat, i don't recall seeing the big flap of gorey skin falling on Robocops chest in the original cut. As well for some reason I don't remember the part where the car purees the toxic waste hoodlum being so graphic. Then again I haven't seen it in awhile either.

The 'plop' is the same but there is some extra neck squirtin'. Emil getting cleaned up by Clarence's car is the same, too.

I think the extra gore is:

Longer shooting in boardroom by ED-209

Murphy's death - arm blown off and extended shot to head (best FX work in the movie)

Clarence's stabbing is a bit squirtier
