I was singing Showtime's praises for running MASTERS OF HORROR, even though some episodes were (obviously) better than others.
But if this is true, then I'll cancel the damn channel.
If it's true... then screw Showtime!

That does suck. But I don't have Showtime anyway and was just gonna wait for the dvds so as long as it's included there, I'll be happy.

What the fuck?
The point of putting this sort of show on pay cable is so that they can get away with shit like that! HBO would have had no problem at all running Miike's episode.

I've heard reactions from both camps--some believe that Miike's episode would truly be "too much" for the Showtime audience (not so much on-screen content--hell, if they can show Carpenter's CIGARETTE BURNS uncut, it can't be just gore)--that the producers of the show should be commended for allowing the episode to be made in the first place; and that Showtime deserves some understanding for the sake of its viewers' sensitivities.
Others believe that this is a marketing ploy simply designed to force viewers to buy the DVD collection.
Now, I can't make the call without having seen Miike's episode for myself. I could invoke such examples as SE7EN, the SAW films and numerous previous installments of MASTERS OF HORROR itself if I wanted to gauge what Showtime's viewers have shown themselves willing to handle. Then again, there are certain things that I, myself, would never want to absorb from a movie--but if I choose to immerse myself in a clearly-labelled "horror" project? That's my responsibility.
What I do know, on the other hand, is that I have faithfully taped the episodes as they've aired--I do NOT want to pay through the nose for a DVD collection, and unless the Miike episode is made available SEPARATELY at a reasonable price, then I have every right to be angry at Showtime.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was a cheese-ball marketing tool for Showtime to sell the DVD set when it comes out.

It seems to me that it is. Honestly, what the hell does Showtime have to lose? It's not like they have to adhere to any broadcast standards. I'm certain that this will build some kind of buzz like "This DVD contains the episode that was TOO HARDCORE FOR CABLE!!!!1"stypees back wrote:It wouldn't surprise me if this was a cheese-ball marketing tool for Showtime to sell the DVD set when it comes out.
They must think people are retards. This is the most transparent marketing move.
