DAY OF THE DEAD remake out next week!

Post by Darth Tanner »

Unfortunately, it looks like its going to be straight-to-DVD (the release date is 4/8). I knew that a remake was coming, but I didn't know it was about to be released until now. I was looking forward to seeing this in the theater, but no such luck:( Also, seeing the names Nick Cannon and Mena Suvari mentioned in the cast didn't do much to boost my enthusiasm. But at least it's being helmed by an experienced director (in this case Steve Miner), so I'm hoping for something at least halfway decent. When I heard they were doing a remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD I protested along with just about everyone else, but actually liked the film when I finally saw it. Having said that, I'm hoping to have a similar experience with the DAY remake even though I'm having my doubts. We'll see when it comes out next Tuesday.

Does anybody know if they are using Romero's unused script for the original film or not? It would be awesome if they at least used that instead of just rehashing the original film.

The DAY OF THE DEAD remake is indefensible trash. Its like they mined every "small town is overrun by ____" movie made in the late 80's/early 90's for cliches, hired the cheapest known bums they could find (both infront of and behind the camera) and then rolled film.

If this wasn't made for a staggering $18 million or a remake of a modern classic, I might give it a bit of slack for being so hilariously inept. As it is, its a sad, sorry excuse for a modern horror film and an insult to George Romero, his movie, their fans and thinking fans of horror cinema in general.

By all means, check it out to see what's being passed off as a remake nowadays - but pay as little as possible doing so. Infact, I heartily recommend pirating this crud so that the same arsehole who also gave us DAY OF THE DEAD 2: CONTAGIUM and CREEPSHOW 3 hopefully goes belly-up before he can unleash anymore woeful rip-offs onto the scene (last I heard, he was working on putting together a KNIGHTRIDERS 2, believe it or not - now is that a deliberate assault on the fans or what, since they're the only ones that know the first movie exists?).

Thanks for the heads-up Griff. I'll still check it out anyway but at least now I know not to expect a whole lot:) But honestly, can it be any worse than say CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD? I never saw DAY OF THE DEAD 2 or CREEPSHOW 3, but my gut instinct told me they were both cheap garbage which is why I never bothered. And now a KNIGHTRIDERS 2?!? Oh man, I hate to think what old George thinks about all of this.

Is there any chance that Rubinstein is behind all of these sequels/remakes? I ask because he and George used to be partners back in the day before splitting ways (right after they made the original DAY) and George didn't seem to fare well from the departure. As I recall, Rubinstein was the only one who saw any money from that DAWN remake. But it's success did get George the green-light to do LAND OF THE DEAD, so I guess he at least got something out out if.

If you don't mind me asking Griff, how did you end up seeing this already? Did you guys get this on video early down under or did it get a theatrical release there? From what I understand, this one was strictly a direct-to-video release (at least here in the states).

I dunno, Chucky. Its all relative. Those with realistic expectations probably weren't phased by the complete turd that CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD turned out to be. It was very low budget, had only tenuous links to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and, with Russo & Co on the scene (and so soon after horrendous NOTLD30, no less), people could only hope for so much... But, to answer your question: No, the DAY remake was nowhere near as bad as that stinker. However, unlike CHILDREN and the dreadful in-name-only DAY sequel from a coupla years ago, CONTAGIUM, DAY08 has a very generous budget and some people of reputation and/or experience attached as well as a very explicit and deliberate association to a particular title in Romero's oeuvre. There's no reason why the filmmakers shouldn't make a go of putting together a quality film here. Given the resources at their disposal, people like yourself are hoping for something somewhat comparable to the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake (something I'm not a big fan of but its a intellectual masterpiece of originality compared to this). What we get instead is something more comparable to FLIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD aka PLANE DEAD - only alot stupider and nowhere as good. And that's simply nowhere near good enough.

From what I understand, the guy responsible for all this horseshit (Robert Dudelson) had the rights to KNIGHTRIDERS, CREEPSHOW and DAY OF THE DEAD fall into his lap a few years back... something to do with Taurus Entertainment who produced those movies (all part of a 3 picture deal Romero got after the success of DAWN)... and has been exploiting them and their fans ever since. Unlike Rubinstein or Russo, he can stake no claim in the success of the original movies and only exists to leech reputations and good names forged through the hard work of others. In other words: he's a talentless bum that's found a cashcow and is milking it to death.

As for how I got to see this... a screener version has been available for some time and I feel no shame in admitting I saw it through nefarious means. I'd have felt shame, however, had I paid good money for this slap in the face (or fuck in the arse, if you prefer).

uhhh yaah, I was going to make a post on this but saw there was one up already. Holy crap. How can they even call it "day of th dead"? because of the name Bud? They should have just called it something different and i wouldn't be so offended. Zombies that defy gravity is gay, unless they are in space, which would be gay. Or would it? Anyway, I would pound the crap out of Mena Suvari, and that teen girl, wow, I would lick out her butthole and and bang her all week. That chick was hot. It was worth one watch just for that hot teen slut. I like her hips and her little boobs... oh man. Like i said worth one watch.

Well I finally got around to renting this last week and.......yes, it was a big disappointment. Aside from the title and a few of the characters, this "remake" bears no resemblance to the original film and it seems that they just slapped the title "DAY OF THE DEAD" on it to make people curious about it. As Griff pointed out, the movie is filled with cliches (including the running/jumping zombies) and is no different than any of the other zombie movies we've been exposed to during the past several years. The cast is only so-so. Ving Rhames is barely in the movie and Mena Suvari seems terribly miscast as a military officer. The only thing positive that can be said about it (aside from some decent effects) is that it is better than turds like CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD and HOUSE OF THE DEAD. But that's not saying a lot and I would only recommend this as a rental to those who were even the least bit curious. As for me....I have the original DAY OF THE DEAD in my collection to revisit whenever I like (which I'll probably do soon), so I'll act like this "remake" never existed.

Watch at your own risk!
