Rank the Dario Argento films

Post by Chris Slack » Tue Aug 19, 2008 7:09 pm

I've been on an Argento kick lately so I thought I'd post this :)

Here's my Argento ranking from top to bottom with all being worth checking out except for the "Utter Crap" section which has been separated. I am only counting movies that he directed as there are too damn many others Image

Suspiria
Deep Red
Tenebre
Inferno
Opera
Phenomena
Four Flies on Grey Velvet
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Sleepless
Two Evil Eyes
Mother of Tears
The Cat o' Nine Tails
Stendhal Syndrome
Trauma
The Five Days of Milan

Utter Crap
Do You Like Hitchcock?
The Card Player
Phantom of the Opera

Well, you got to see MOTHER OF TEARS, which is more than I did...

I'll grant you your placement of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and there was nothing too exciting about DO YOU LIKE HITCHCOCK?, but I certainly thought THE CARD PLAYER was enjoyable enough.

Top of the list for me would be a damned tie between DEEP RED and TENEBRAE...

Sleepless
The Cat o' Nine Tails (only ever saw the cut version)
Two Evil Eyes
Four Flies on Grey Velvet (only ever saw a crappy boot)

But this one is one of the worst movies I've ever seen: Phantom of the Opera

My list would be almost identical except that I would put Phenomena behind Tenebre followed by Four Flies On Grey Velvet with Opera behind that.

It's hard to say because they're either fairly fresh in my memory or very fuzzy. One thing is for sure, I'm certain about the first two and the last two but all those in between could probably slide on the scale a bit though.

Tenebre
Deep Red
Four Flies on Grey Velvet
Inferno
Sleepless
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
The Cat O' Nine Tails
Mother of Tears
Phenomena
Trauma
Suspiria
Opera
The Stendhal Syndrome
The Card Player
Phantom of the Opera

I alternate between which of those I prefer quite frequently. They're such different films, it's almost hard to compare 'em.

My list will be a bit different since I've always LOVED Phenomena and never really took to the "three mothers" stuff. But I think Deep Red has to come first..

Deep Red
Phenomena
Tenebre
Opera
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
Stendhal Syndrome
Inferno
Suspiria
Four Flies on Grey Velvet
Sleepless
Two Evil Eyes
The Cat o' Nine Tails
Trauma
The Card Player
Mother of Tears
Do You Like Hitchcock?
Phantom of the Opera

I actually don't think I've seen The Five Days of Milan. Totally forgot about it, actually. And yes, I DO like Stendhal Syndrome more than Suspiria. That's not a typo.

I couldn't believe it when I read the other day that someone listed Argento's "Phantom of the Opera" as a good remake. I remember it as one of the worst movies I've ever sat through. Just terrible.

That's not a faulty memory on your part. It is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.
