I think episodes IV - VI are incredible movies. The prequels have been such a huge disappointment.

This is pretty cool news. It's the Special Edition, but I really couldn't give a fuck at this point. I've come to accept that I'll never find discs of the untouched holy three short of crappy DVD R bootlegs sourced from from the THX video tapes so I'll have to give in to Lucas' whim.

It's just nice to finally have a DVD of Star Wars. The current ongoing trilogy can eat my ass.

I'm sure you'll probably get the original three unrestored on dvd someday.....just long after we've all bought these versions. Personally, I don't have all that much of a problem with the newer versions. I prefer the originals like most everyone else, but can deal with the special editions. I was under the impression that Lucas was waiting until Epidosde 3 was out on dvd to release Eps. 4-6 though? What happened to that plan? And if that was never the plan to begin with, why the fuck has it taken so damn long to get these out then?

It'd be nice if the DVD's have the original version included, cause the special editions weren't that special.
I have to return some videotapes.

I work in musick/dvd retail and I can only imagine how many fucking times I am going to have to hear little bitches complain about the "Special Edition" versions being released...
It is obviously just for the money... give em another few years or so and they will put out the "original" versions so people will buy them again.

Who knows why it is taking so long. Maybe redoing the extra stuff on the DVD? I'm trying to talk Ron into waiting to buy it until both versions are available. He painted scenes from The Empire Strikes Back all over his bedroom at his parents' house when it came out. It was amazing. I should scan the photos and share.

I wish they would include both versions like the Alien Quadroligy. I LOVE that set! Includes everything but commentary from the director of the third movie, because he was unhappy with it, as were the fans.

Fincher's continuing animosity for that movie is pretty funny. When Project Mayhem degauss the videos in the Fight Club movie, Alien 3 is the first one to get erased.

Lucas may be a really shitty film maker, but he's a killer business man and I wouldn't be surprised if in another five years he releases the original three in a "Classic Star Wars" boxed set to try and woo fans into buying those movies yet again.

I'll say one thing of us Star Wars fans, we're guttons for punishment. Lucas is like an abusive boyfriend, we always come back for more.

Ever since the INDIANA JONES series hit DVD last year, I knew it was only a matter of time before Lucasfilm annouced the original STAR WARS trilogy. This is something that (as a longtime fan) I've been waiting for since I got my DVD player and I'm glad I resisted buying some of those millions of bootlegs that seem to float around on eBay. September can't get here soon enough.

As much as I liked the "special edition" versions, I would also like the original unaltered versions just for completeness. These are the versions that we all grew up watching. I know Lucas has the right to do what he wants to his films, but it's not right to be robbed of our childhood memories. If he won't give us the original films, then I hope he will at least give us the unaltered scenes as supplements. While Lucas has repeatedly stated that the original versions no longer exist, I wouldn't be surprised if he has them stored in his vault someplace. Speaking of supplements, I hope they will also include those deleted scenes that people have read about for years but never saw (i.e. the sandstorm from RETURN OF THE JEDI).

The prequels got spectactular DVD releases, so I hope Lucas will do the same for the trilogy that made his a mega-billionaire. Only time will tell.

From the Digital Bits website:

"Yeah, we know this is going to get some people's undies in a bunch again... but we can say with some confidence now that when Lucasfilm and Fox release the Star Wars Trilogy on DVD in September, the films ARE going to include new footage. We've confirmed "unofficially" with three separate sources, each in positions to know, that at least SOME new footage is being added to the films, and that more special effects enhancements, tweaks and fixes are being done. We're also told that Lucasfilm MAY include additional deleted scenes for the trilogy on the bonus disc, separate from the material added into the films themselves (rather like they've done with Episodes I & II). We've been told of at least a few changes that are being made, but we're going to wait to confirm them better before we post anything. Keep in mind that we have no idea how extensive or minor the whole of the additions and changes will be. Hopefully, we'll learn more from Lucasfilm in the near future. So, okay... we're now officially intrigued. We'll post more when we can."

I dread to think what these changes will be, but I'll still buy them anyway:)
