Joel Siegel walks out of Clerks 2 screening...

Post by ZXRO »

...not only did he walk out, but he was very vocal as he did so. At the 40 minute mark he exclaimed how he had had enough, and how it was the first movie he walked out of in 30 years of reviewing. What a professional.

I can't wait to see this one.

Did he walk out 'cause he was offended, or because it sucks?

Smith has been going downhill FAST since Dogma, and in fact, has been going downhill since about the second half of Dogma.

He walked out in disgust reacting to a scene involving a *MILD SPOILER ALERT* graphic description of a woman having sex with a donkey.

I guess I will find out tonite if Smith is truly done or not.

As far as I'm concerned, he was done with Jersey Girl. I understand he wanted to do something different, but c'mon! Doing something different doesn't mean it has to be bland, and certainly doesn't mean it needs to be so predictable you know how it's going to end before the first scene is over. What a waste of celluloid. The only really funny bit is watching Affeleck trying to cry.

And, wasn't Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back supposed to be the end of those characters? This reeks of, dare I say it, sell out, to me. Smith trying desperately to regain the fan base he lost by becoming all pompous.

I'll see Clerks II 'cause I like Randal, but that's the only reason.

To me, going back to his Jersey movies tells me that Kevin doesn't handle failure well. People didn't just not like Jersey Girl, they fucking hated it. I didn't see it, so I can't comment, but backpedaling to familiar territory speaks volumes to me. It's almost like he's trying to apologize to his fanbase by giving them something proven.

It's really too bad because I badly want to see him do something new that doesn't involve his flagship characters. Thos were funny movies and even though I prefer dick and fart jokes to Chasing Amy, that movie was an indication of what the guy is capable of when he applies himself. Putting in Jay and Silent Bob almost reeked of afterthought, as if the studio saw it and asked where they were.

The Bennifer hype really hurt him with Jersey Girl, but harsh criticism shouldn't make the guy shrink back to old habits. He should have just flipped off the people that didn't like it and made another movie unrelated to his saga.

Thing is, I hear Clerks 2 is pretty funny, so what the hell do I know?

Kevin Smith is a fanboy. He makes movies for fanboys. How many other movie makers have such close interaction with their fans via the internet? How many directors have a whole store full of merchandise related to their products, all of which can be purchased with autographs on them? This movie has been made because there is still a large audience out there clamoring for more Jay and Silent Bob.

I've been following the production of this movie for quite awhile. He made it on the cheap and on the quick. It got an 8 minute standing ovation at Cannes. The first Clerks showcased his awesome dialogue writing skills, and I am sure this one will be no different. I missed it last night but I am going to see a matinee today.

BTW, I didn't get past the 20 minute mark of Jersey Girl before I turned it off, and I think Chasing Amy is his best movie.

Smith has been going downhill FAST since Dogma, and in fact, has been going downhill since about the second half of Dogma.

His sophomore film "Mallrats" is what pretty much put a bullet hole in his heavily promising career(and having Shannon Doherty starring in it didn't help make things any better, either).

Those facst are very well-known about Kevin, since which other filmmaker do you see in regular contact(via the 'net)with his many fans(Quentin Tarantino? Sam Raimi? Steven Fucking Soughbergh? Appraently Not !!!!),and he really does care about all of his films,no matter what folks say about them.

As for Joel Siegel walking out,it makes me really curious upon how a nationwide re-release screening of "Salo:120 Days Of Sodom' would go,with the likes of Ebert,Siegel,Fat Harry Knowles,Michael Medved,Rex Reed, and all of the other nationwide critics all in attendance(and how they would all handle that viewing of that very film).

It was an awesome movie. You may all continue on with your pointless bickering.

I fucking loved it! That was the first movie I've seen in a long time where the entire audiance was howling the whole way through. Watching Jay do his impersonation of Buffalo Bill's dance scene from Silence of the Lambs was fucking PRICELESS! :D
I'd definatly go again.

Here's an audio file of Smith on a radio show phoning up Siegel and hassling him out for making such a scene.

http://www.viewaskew.com/kevin/joelsiegel.mp3

Only listened to about half of it before I got over the whole thing (big deal, get over it and besides, we're not familiar with Joe down under) so lemme know if the rest is definitely worth checking out.

ha ha he was on O and A the other day and talking to Kevin Smith for like 20 minutes and thought it was O and A until they finally told him that he was talking to Kevin. It was actually pretty funny, even for a bunch of Stern rip-offs.

Yeah, I got sent that link. The only thing I like about O and A is the support they give to good stand-ups like Jim Norton and the other Cringe Humor guys. Not a fan of Stern, either. Adam Carolla is pretty funny, but I might just think that from all the Loveline I used to listen to.

So who else has seen Clerks 2 so far?

I liked it a lot. You could tell he was TRYING a little harder in this one, which is not a good thing.. but it was still funny as hell.

For the record, I HATED Chasing Amy. Just had to say that.
