I've got a screener that I've been sitting on for a few weeks. I fully intend to watch it but I also have a pile of bootlegs that grows by the day and a couple of Netflix movies sitting downstairs that I don't know when I'll get to.
I have yet to hear a bad thing about it. I'm a big Del Toro fan, so I really can't wait, I just need to find the time.

Watched it last night. Loved every second of it. The whole thing is a fairy tale, even the stuff existing outside of Ofelia's imagination. People need to see this movie. When Del Toro makes the movies he wants to make, they turn out awesome! I wonder what he'll do next, he's been talking about doing a Lovecraft short for a long time.
Also, looks like Mike Mignola designed some of the monsters. The Faun and the monster that eats children looked like something out of a BPRD comic.

I can't believe there are people out there calling this "overrated" and "forgettable."
This was one of the most profoundly moving, beautifully crafted and devastating films I have ever seen in my life. I expect no less from Guillermo del Toro--and yet I got so much more.
I'm not going to go back and revise my "2006 In Review" thread--this is a dark fantasy in a class of its own, and del Toro has already received my Best of the Year honor once (for BLADE II, if i remember correctly). But this one goes into the pantheon of child/fantasy/horror classics--in which del Toro has now scored TWICE.
If you thought anywhere nearly as highly of this film as I did, you'll want to see the following without delay:
THE CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE
THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE
THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE
I'M NOT SCARED
These films have brought tears to the eyes of the bravest of men--more than one in a day's viewing may just be too much to handle.
Wow. And last week it was PERFUME.
Uh... what's this about a freaking HITCHER remake? Is THAT what we're supposed to do when given an opportunity to make a MOVIE? Sorry--catch THAT on the rebound, if at ALL.

I finally had the oppertunity to see it, we watched it yesterday. Very good, it's one of those that you continue to think about a week after the show. .
sad but very good story, some of the visuals will be forever burned into my mind, like the creature by the feast. . . .

Good movie. Just graphic enough and enough "suggestion" to make me feel like I was watching gore, but there wasn't any real gore. Its easily the darkest fairy tale type I've ever seen. I'm not a fan of subtitles thugh. They give me a headache. Too much great imagery to be switching my eyes back and forth like that.

Ok, this must be where I differ from the lot of you. It was a good movie, yes, but come on...
You know, fuck, I am down fucking $40 cause of all these "piss your pants funny" and "totally awesome amazing" movies that you all tell me about. Sure Borat and PL were good movies, but $20 a pop?? NO fucking way. I think that may be the last time i see a movie in the theater. There is no point in it. I pay $20 to sit there for a 2 smokeless hours constantly adjusting around in an uncomfortable seat like I got crabs just to be let down in the end?? I am expecting to be blown away at a life changing event and instead end up twenty dollars short and with a case of the hemroids. fuck that, I will wait 3 months and lay naked in my Tempur Pedic smoking bowl after bowl and beer-bonging Milwakee's best. Now that's a life changing night. And I won't see you... at the movies.

Where are they $20 a pop, and what movies do you consider to be worth it? Borat and PL both brought tears to my eyes for different reasons--sorry they didn't work for you, but I was neither exaggerating my opinion nor trying to trick you into wasting your money...LIVE FO RETSINIM wrote:Ok, this must be where I differ from the lot of you. I rarely travel anywhere without up to at least one slut on my arm. That way if any shit goes down I have a human shield, or the other way, it makes for a nice hostage negotiation. It costs me 2 tickets to everywhere, but it’s worth the piece of mind it gives me. I need to protect my delicate organs. I recommend it.

Well see that’s just it. I guess it is my fault for taking the advice. I don’t know man, I guess I like different stuff, and it seems that the stuff everyone else likes, seems really dull and “already done before” to me.
For instance, I just watched Troma’s War. Now to me, this was a great movie. It was made in 1988 and is almost a social commentary on exactly what is happening in the world today. It had hot 80’s boobs, cheesy gore, comedy, action, a message, I laughed, I cried, and was made for pennies. I respect that and find it interesting. Now some people would watch it and go “ohh man, I could tell he didn’t really get shot” or “you can see her splat the blood right on” and totally miss the entire point.
Now when I see pan’s labyrinth, all I saw was an updated, R-rated version of Never Ending Story, or Legend. Good movies. But nothing that really blew me away or made me think. It was actually a tad boring to me at times if you want to know the truth. True, I guess it’s not my genre, but I liked LOR and even Harry Pooper kept me watching. I don’t know, they are all predictable formulas to me I guess. About 90% of the time I know what’s going to happen by 15 minutes into the movie. If I spend $20 on a damn movie I want to be all fucked up when I stumble out of the theater. Fuck it, Netflix is $20 for an entire month of unlimited rentals 4 at a time. From now on I am staying home and watching my crappy B movies in peace.
Well I could rant all night, but I won't hi-jack this thread any longer. You all continue on with you're fantasy world talk.
