Went and saw a midnight showing in Bellingham last night.
What a great movie! I would say the best so far in the series. The director had a really good handle on the story and the cast was terrific as always, the new teacher Professor Slughorn was great.
This movie sets up the final two part 7th chapter beautifully, with an ending that reminded me of Fellowship of the rings where the main characters contemplate their next move and it kind of just leaves you there. Not a cliff hanger but not an ending either.
Special effects were good, they always seem to improve a bit with each film, though this film focuses on character development and story more than anything else (and does a great job).
I 100% recommend this movie!

I agree. Best one yet. Very entertaining. It managed to keep my daughter mostly occupied even though it was more than 2 1/2 hours in length. That is saying something.

I concur with the majority: HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF BLOOD PRINCE is one of the best in the series, especially considering that it's an adaptation of one of the nastiest and most difficult books in the canon. I recall that ORDER OF THE PHOENIX seemed to fly by, popping characters on the screen simply because they were in the book, expecting the audience to fill in the blanks and giving awfully short shrift to some of the most compelling and important sequences (the Arithmancy lessons, for example). But the film series has made a remarkable comeback (not that PHOENIX was actually "bad," but you know what I mean).

The "magic" lies in the fact that the cast has grown so comfortable and natural with the characters that their quiet interactions are every bit as enjoyable as the bursts of action--and that new players are so skilfully chosen as to blend right in (Professor Slughorn being the best example yet). And thankfully, the film plays it correctly in choosing to bring a lighter touch to one of the grimmest books in the lineup. Now, nothing's changed--not even the ending (as if they'd get away with that), but there's still room for lightheartedness and even out-and-out laughter (Aragog's funeral?!) as the inevitable slowly closes in.

Okay, I've got one little nitpick... the TITLE of the book/movie should have gotten a bit more attention... having so-and-so simply say "Yes, I'm the Half Blood Prince" when he does just isn't enough. It reminded me of the Patronus that showed up much earlier in the series--okay, it's a white stag, but what was the SIGNIFICANCE of it being a white stag... see what I mean? Ummm... so just WHY are you the Half Blood Prince?

Other than that, you can take this brief, sketchy review and take it as a recommendation--my son loved it, too (running times really don't get to him, so I've got to hand it to him). It's a fine series entry and it's better than the previous one, and that's all I need to say.

This movie was so boring it made the other five look good. Nothing fuckin' happens, and every plot point set up could've been easily handled in the previous movie. I've not read the books, but my understanding is not much happens in the novel of this one either. God, I'll be glad when these are all done and I don't get dragged out to them anymore.
