Okay, seen it and here's the verdict:

House of 1000 Corpses is... Okay.

The good:
Bill Mosely and Sid Haig are fucking awesome.

The movie has style in spades. It's a very good looking movie with a great design about it. The editing is fast, like a music video and they tie in a lot of clips from midnight horror movies and such. The editing reminded me of Natural Born Killers. It's very fast paced and hallucinatory.

Lionel Richie and Rob Zombie team up in the end for a duet of Brick House. I'd sit through this movie again just to hear that song. Who knew Rob had soul?

The baaaad:
Around halfway through, the movie stops making sense. I mean, it had great potential right out of the gate, looking like a little bit Texas Chainsaw and a little bit Last House On The Left but then things stop gelling together and it becomes downright stupid. We go from a somewhat plausible plot about a car breaking down out in the sticks to biomechanical monsters in a series of underground tunnels. What the hell went wrong?

It's fucked up for no reason at all. We move from perverse setpiece to perverse setpiece with no sort of setup or explanation. Suddenly everyone has to wear strange masks while they eat, then we're pulled to a makeshift stage somewhere in the house where Grandpa does a bizarre standup comedy act involving a long joke about eating pussy, then the Baby character comes out and sings... and none of the cast ever think this is weird. They just participate.

You'll want to find and kill Sheri Moon by the end of the movie to stop her from ever acting again.

Did I mention it doesn't make any sense?

--

I know that Rob Zombie meant well with this but ultimately it feels like several movies with no exposition. Maybe the cut I saw was the most recent theatrical version and all the plot got cut out with the gore (though this movie is fairly bloody)... I can't really say.

The movie making no sense is right on the money, fucking bizzare stuff. Maybe it will play better on the big screen. You were right on the money with the "Natural Born Killers" comparision, the tripped out stuff was very similar.

Wow, okay. Maybe I should've waited until I'd seen the damn thing before making assumptions - the Lion's Gate logo at the begining and the 2002 dedication at the end would suggest this is pretty much the final version. But yeah, I can't imagine some of this shit getting past the MPAA so it'll be interesting to see what hits the theatres.

For what its worth, I dug HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES. Its a noisy, scattershot, furiously disjointed over-the-top assault that is anything but routine and infinitely more fascinating to me than the conventional shit that's getting churned out by the fuckload nowadays. Like it or not, its different and not easily dismissed. Subtley is definitely not Rob Zombie's forte and watching this flick is like having him pour a box of his favourite toys over your head while he's screaming in your fucking ears. If you've ever seen a White Zombie music video, stretch it out to 90 mins and you'll get the idea. Its an extreme and as such is gonna rub alot of people the wrong way. If it doesn't wear them out, first.

I'm not surprised Universal shat themselves, this is not major studio material at all and I couldn't imagine them trying to defend it. I hope it makes a whole bunch of money just to spite theirs and MGM's precious arses and, at the very least, just to show there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Oh, and if I do find Sheri Moon, Latte, I don't think killin's gonna be the first thing to cross my mind...

Isn't she Zombie's girlfriend? I could swear I've seen her in his videos and in some of his CD packaging.

Anyhow, my final judgement of the movie is that I absolutely hated the ending, but against better judgement liked the rest of it. It was really unconventional and didn't make for a very good movie, but on a purely sensory level it's total eye candy. I really dig that sort of thing.

I definitely think Zombie needs to go back and make another movie. Maybe he should direct someone else's script and use that visual style all the way. I think he could definitely bring something positive to the new horror table.

We'll see if he does another, though. Maybe all the political bullshit that went on with distribution turned him off to the movie making scene.

Even though I had been waiting for this out of curiosity for over two years, I never expected it to be the genre-saving classic that everyone said it would be. Nice to hear that it least it has something going for it. But with all the distribution headaches that have plagued HO1000C, maybe it would be best if it went straight to video in an unrated version. I don't think I would go to see it in the theater anyway as it sounds like it probably works better on the small screen. But I definitely plan to check it out one way or the other when it is released.

This movie is a freaking masterpiece IMO. This can hold it's own along with the other top movies in the genre. I'm refering to the old school B movies like "The Undertaker and His Pals", "Buried Alive (aka Blue Holocaust, Beyond the Darkness, Buio Omega)", and "Blood Sucking Freaks".

My personal opinion is that every single element in this movie was done right! :smoke:

Whoa, this movie sucked!!

Rob Zombie deserves to die of AIDS for making this turd of a movie.

Not even an uncut DVD release could save this worthless ass piece of shit. We've all been had by moronic geekboys and their worthless NetHype. Fuck this shit.

ahhh...yes, I feel I must state again that this was a great flick.

And Clark, no it wasnt loaded with blood but, you just have to see it.

I think the main reason I compared it to those aprticular is also because 95% of all people I have spoken to in the past said the same thing about those movies as some people are saying about this one. "It sucks". hehe....that's cool and all but, for me, my views and my preferences, this is/was a classic!!!!

If you thought that was bad, Rob's busy on another movie. I haven't heard for sure, but I'd bet that it's that Black Rider X script that he wrote that was intended to be The Crow 3, originally.

Maybe he'll find his legs and get better, or maybe we'll wind up with another House of 1000 Corpses.

After seeing House, I'm willing to put my money on the latter.

Sorta off topic, but vaguely relevant nonetheless..

Does anyone know any good free usenet servers that you can access binaries groups (if such a thing exists)? Because I notice a lot of you guys are able to find some funky shit on usenet, and the server I get mine off doesn't have shit.

I wish I knew of some public access usenet servers, but I only have my own AT&T one and it's dogshit. It preserves headers for 36 hours. I'm not sure what the news server here at my office is, though, because this one keeps headers around for a week.

There are pay usenet servers like Giganews and Easynews where you buy a couple of gigs worth of bandwidth and then go nuts until you're out of bandwidth but they can be a little on the pricey side if you want to really get down and do some downloading.

Free usenet server?!

"Er, what country do you think this is?"

The only one that comes close, to my knowledge, is http://news.astraweb.com/ who will give you an amazing free 50MB per day. You tend to use half that up just downloading the headers but hey, its good for picking up the odd missing file or two...

I liked it when I saw the bootleg tape, but I fucking really dug it in the theatre. If you are judging it by the boot, do yourself a favor and see it on the big screen...

I thought it was Loud, Stupid, and Fun. The perfect movie for a Saturday night. Leave your brain at the door, sneak in a 5th of your favorite booze, smoke a fatty in the parking lot, and you can't go wrong.

Any of you fuck faces that didn't like it can lick the dried crusted cheesy under my ball sack... Lighten the fuck up. I'll take "House" any day over 90% of the Hollywood Horror garbage they feed us...

Best of all, there were no ASIAN people it in! (That was a joke for all you PC mutherfuckers that can't grasp that shit)

Fuck you all (with no lube)

PS: I'm doing the official Fangoria T-Shirt. Yea I'm a fucking sell-out. Fuck you, I do whatever I gotta do to keep from getting a real job, aside from selling my asshole. Go here for a rough pencil sketch of the design. Keep in mind this is a rough sketch. The finished product will be in full color... Go here:

Oh, free Usenet servers DO exist. There are heaps of them. It's just that most of them are shit, and don't store the binary groups.

Just so I could see it on the big screen--I just got done driving 50 miles each way just to get to the CLOSEST theatre playing the damn thing!

And I nearly didn't make it on time... but all's well that ends well... if I hadn't seen the pre-credit sequence, I might have been especially disappointed.

Simply put, you have got to see Sid Haig as "Captain Spaulding." This is a classic character and an unforgettable performance--my biggest gripe with the movie occurred when I realized (since I had scrupulously avoided all details and spoilers) that the movie wasn't going to be spending more time with him! "Wait--they're leaving? They're going somewhere ELSE now? NOOOOOO!"

In short, I thought this was a very sincere effort that truly tried to go where most so-called horror films today are simply afraid to. The technique finally wore thin on me--the incessant, solarized "rock video" moments did nothing for me, and I felt more of an effort was made trying to be "strange" than trying to be "scary." The jump moments were all visible miles away, and the biggest miscalculation (strictly for ME) was to transform what should have been the most shocking extended sequence into a perverted Slim Whitman music video. The very final moments of that scene, however (the crane shot you've probably heard about), were excellent. And the final moments... extremely disappointing for me, but I won't spoil things by explaining.

HOUSE essentially used the first two TCM films for resource material (right down to Bill Moseley, who's certainly good here), and those newcomers who've never seen them (and I'm sure can't wait for the remake) are likely to be much more affected by Zombie's take on the material.

But (unless you're faced with a 50-mile drive of your own) see it for Sid Haig. See it for Bill Moseley. See it for the right attitude--it's always nice to know that someone cares.

Well, I just saw the movie tonite.

And well..........I can see where Zombie has ripped off all his stuff for this movie.

A lot of it reminded me of all the Chainsaw series, so much so it made the movie predicable.

Along with the Oliver Stone style of editing and adding little psycho cuts like in Natural Born Killers.................

and then the great one liners that is always common with Sam Raimi (cant remember how to spell his name).

Even goes as far as using the "Give Daddy some sugar, baby!"

I just wish there were more T & A and this would be a much better film. Also more scenes with Tiny......that guy was classic.

Good movie but nothing original or amazing as all the hype around it has made it out to be.

I'ld see it again.
