Okay, okay I FINALLY sat down and watched this one today. I must admit, I thought it was really cool. I had to suspend my disbelief a bit, but I'm good at that. I think many people thought I'd have a problem with the films social/political content, but I did not. The movie was a lot funnier than I expected (in the beginning anyway) and I really liked the ending, always a plus for me. I know you guys have already discussed this, but just thought I post that I finally took your all's advice! LOL
Now how the hell do I find time to watch all 300 commentary tracks before the dvd is due back?

I thought the film was pretty good as well. Definitely one of the best films of 1999. I have to admit that the ending (unlike the ending to the SIXTH SENSE) totally took me by surprise. As with some of Fincher's other films, this one is sheer genius and I look forward to his next film. If you really like the movie like I do, it is well worth it to get the DVD. I'm sure you can find it pretty cheap if you know where to look.

Here I go again...I didn't like Fight Club either because of the "big twist." Like we haven't seen the split thing 100 different times....blech. I did really like the porn frame spliced into the end, though.

judging by my nick, you could probably tell I really dig this movie.
138: Technically, Palahniuk's novel beat the other twist endings to it. Before I read the novel I'd never really seen a twist like this one.
I've studied this movie, analyzed it. I really embraced it when I saw it. Being the wage slave that I am, I connected with the character a lot better than most.
Dave: Buy the DVD. It's well worth the money spent. I've had it since the day it was released and still haven't seen everything on the disc. Fincher really knows how to put a good DVD together. The Seven DVD is really good too.
138 - it's not just the twist. It's the whole damned movie. It's a work of art. Having read the novel and watching the movie, it works so much better as a film, particularly with Fincher's direction. Parts like the Ikea scene were purely and utterly wonderful. I can't see how anyone could hate this film, except the gits who didn't actually watch the whole thing or saw 'bits' of it. Grrr.

I don't think it was utter crap, and there were things I liked, such as his apartment filling up with catalog stuff, but I REALLY didn't like the twist and, just in case someone's reading this and hasn't seen the movie, I'm giving away the end here, I found it really fuckin' stupid that he just shot himself in the jaw to get rid of Brad Pitt. If Pitt disappeared because of Norton's true desire to be rid of him, the desire woulda been enough without the gunshot. I just found that really chinzy.

Think of it more like him calling his bluff. The Narrator (Norton) was watching himself through his other personality's eyes. His other personality saw the shot, and surmised he had just shot himself in the head. It's all very metaphysical.

If you see my email, you'll know that I also liked this movie to the point of fanatical hysteria. Before this movie came out, I was always told to stop running my mouth about the social cast of America. You know, like some celebrity telling my I need to wear this or drink that. Granted, I never took my ideals and beliefs as far as the character Tyler Durden, but I did have some of the same feelings of disgust when I saw my friends "buying in" to A&F, Gap, Ralph Lauren, etc..
Ok, I'm not here to discuss my beliefs, I'm here for the movie. It is a work of art and I would very much like to read the novel. Oh and I could have sworn that I read somewhere that Fight Club was a knock-off of some theory of Sigmund Freaud's?????? Anyone care to answer that for me??
I read the book a few years back in one sitting. It's a very quick read, a little over 200 pages. I thought the movie did the book justice. Having read it and then hearing that they were making a movie based on it, I couldn't fathom how they'd pull it off, but they did.
There's a lot that guys can relate to in the movie as it really is a guy's movie. My fiancee can't make it through without falling asleep. I identified a lot with the social expectations themes and the loss of identity. Not that I'm some kind of anti-social hermit, but a lot of it rang true to me. So I really bought it on that level. I have a few friends who LOVE it. They watch it nearly daily, can quote it verbatim, but I can't really tell why.
What I find even weirder, having read a couple of Palahniuk's books now, is how the guy can be such a nihilist in his writing. If you listen to the commentary on the DVD, he's a very grounded individual as opposed to the snarling sociopath you might think of him as having read books like Fight Club, Choke and Survivor.
Last I heard, the next Palahniuk book being optioned is Choke, which should be very interesting. Plans to adapt Survivor were scuttled after the whole 9-11 thing went down as the entirety of the book is told from the cockpit of an airplane doomed to crash... which is too bad. It's another great story.
