Cannibal Holocaust

Post by I am 138 »

Quick question. Is the newer DVD, the one for sale at Luminous, better than the Substance one? I have the substance DVD, so wouldn't want to "upgrade" if it wasn't far superior (plus the Substance, though a bootleg, contains the soundtrack as well on a different audio channel). I know the Grindhouse version is suppoused to come out "soon" but they've been sayin' that for a long ass time now.

I'm waiting for the Grindhouse one. From the looks out it, it'll be THE definitive DVD release of this movie.

The latest re-re-re-release of EC's DVD appears to be the best thing currently out. It's 16x9, for one thing. Look for the black cover with the crystal skull. I've got the Substance boot, and am sticking with that until such time as Grindhouse's probable vaporware disc is released.

EC's rerelease is missing footage, wait for the Grindhouse disc. Are you really that impatient?

I'm happy to wait, I just saw that the other DVD was out and thought it might be just as good as the Grindhouse one. The Substance disc is pretty good.

Grindhouse's DVD will be the ultimate version of Cannibal Holocaust, and if you buy any other version you're wasting your money. Even if another company manages to match the picture quality of the film itself (which will be tough, Grindhouse went back and digitally remastered it from the original negative), no one will be able to beat Grindhouse's supplemental materials, which include trailers, poster and stills gallery, language options, commentary with Deodato and Kerman, interviews, short subjects, etc. To me it's worth the wait, I've waited just as long for other DVDs (Synapse's Street Trash, VIP's Jack The Ripper, Anchor Bay's Emanuelle In America)

I'm assuming the Emmanuelle DVD will still be cut, or are they releasing the XXX version?

i've been told ABs Emanuelle in America will be totally uncut -- porn footage, snuff segments, horse diddling, etc.

Wasn't the horse diddling in Caligula: The Untold Story? I don't remember anything like that in Emmanuelle in America. I guess there's actually had something like 24 frames of hardcore footage (my friend counted them for his book review). I don't know if there's a "harder" version, but that's what the hardcore amounted to for me. Kinda like all the hardcore sex in Erotic Nights of The Living Templar Wannabes...

You are referring to "Erotic Nights of the Living Dead", right? Now that is one real stinker of a flick! Franco has made a LOT of bad films but in my opinion that one is the worst.

As far as the Cannibal Holocaust DVD goes I'll hold off for the Grindhouse one, my older Cult Epics laserdisk is still holding out pretty well.

Came across a German language version of Emanuelle in America, on DVD.I didn't purchase it.Because of the forthcoming Anchor Bay version. Hope Anchor Bay perserves everything, in their American release. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. But I also gave Artisan the benefit on No Ho Sonno. And they fucked it up.

Yep, that one. But I thought it was D'Amato? I remember, 'cause of the scene where the guy's in the shower with the two girls sudding him up, and there's like five minutes of footage of them trying to get his dick up. We kept sayin' he'd gone impotent due to his surroundings...he'd been "D'Amatoed." We dropped the term since no one would have a fuckin' clue what we were on about. That scene was really intersting because they take forever getting him an erection, then it ends...

Yep EROTIC NIGHTS OF THE LIVING DEAD is a film by Joe D'Amato, not Franco. I also agree with Chris that this film is really the pits. I saw it once and never plan to again. It was a chore just trying to sit through it and there is nothing good or interesting about it. PORNO HOLOCAUST is slightly better, but not very much. The best film D'Amato has done IMO is MONSTER HUNTER.

I personally loved Erotic Nights of the Living Dead, i think it contains some of the best Italian zombie scenes ever filmed.

ALL current prints of Erotic Nights are missing the true XXX footage. the current worldwide owner and distributer of the film doesn't want to be known as a porn merchant and has trimmed all the XXX penetration shots out of any print they send out. that's why we're essentially stuck with a lot of foreplay and no payoff. there is ONE theatrical print around that is uncut that was screened at a film festival in like Holland a few years back, but unfortunately hasn't made an appearance since.

I probably saw an "uncut" Emmanuelle that was just uncut in terms of violence, but there's still 24 frames of XXX footage.

The Erotic Nights I saw had penetration in terms of a bottle, that was it. It was suppousedly the one with the extra ten minutes of footage back in it. I guess it doesn't really matter since the movie's so bad.

OK Bruce, I respect your opinions as far as what you like and dislike. But the "best Italian zombie scenes ever filmed"?!? The zombies in this movie were very lame compared to the Fulci and Romero zombies. Even the zombies in BURIAL GROUND were more interesting than in this movie. The effects were laughably cheesy (except for the castration scene). As for my take on the film, I thought it was pure shit. The story (if one actually exists in this movie) made no sense whatsoever. In short, I found the movie awful and totally boring. Not even the presence of George Eastman and Laura Gemser could save this movie. As much as I hate to say it, I would much rather watch I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER a second time than sit through this turd again.

The only fictional movie that I know of where you actually see someone get killed is Spartacus. The (human) maiming in CH is all faked. If you want real death, look to one of the several lines of real death videos. Can't give you advice on which ones, 'cause I can't stand any of those things.

There is also the Men Behind the Sun series from China which utilizes real corpses. We put on part 2 at a small video party, and immediatly 2 of us didn't want to watch it 'cause it opened with a female corpse getting sawn up. But our friend had to review it, so he kept it on...Part one is even worse. I watched it 'cause I was told it was really good, despite its unethical elements. This time a little boy gets autopsied and a cat is flung into a room of starving rats. The rats are later set on fire.

The titles got switched when they were released in the US by Dead Alive, though, so I think Men Behind the Sun is bad and Labratory of the Devil is the even worse one. These movies really made me want to just curl up and die. Literally.

Call me strange, but Men Behind the Sun barely made me flinch. I'd heard too much about it to begin with. Only the rat/cat scene bothered me.

What worries me even more is that even though they ban pap like Texas Chainsaw Massacare Two in Australia, for some reason the full uncut Men Behind the Sun is legal - their reason, "it depicts true war atrocities". But by the same token, doesn't that mean that they could get away with the same thing for Salo? (not that I particularly want to see that piece of trash again)

Stupid fucking censors..

Allan.
