Blue Underground's DVDs - First Impression

Post by bruce h »

At first glance, Blue Underground's initial releases appear to be very worthwhile investments. Pulled right from the negative, THE TOOLBOX MURDERS is one of the best DVD transfers I've ever seen, ranking alongside ZOMBIE LAKE and Fulci's THE BLACK CAT. The original negative of SHOCKWAVES was lost some time ago so BU had to resort to a 35mm print as their master, and while it still looks better than ever be warned there's a few spots of slight damage and some grain. THE PROWLER resides somewhere between the two - nice looking and in good shape, yet filmed in a soft-focus sorta way, so rookies to the film probably won’t appreciate it’s new clarity as much as seasoned vets. The trio is absolutely packed with extras - including featurettes, commentaries, stills, trailers, behind-the-scenes footage, etc. So put aside your fears, the advance buzz for Blue Underground has been well placed.

Hey Bruce, can you give us any more detail about the Tom Savini makeup stuff on The Prowler? I'm not a fan of slasher films in general, but I am a Savini fan, so I'm wondering if the extras make this a must-own. I would kill for a dvd of Fangoria's 'Scream Greats' that featured him.

Well, Savini is on the commentary track with Joseph Zito, there's behind-the-scenes effects footage of EVERY death scene, and there's behind-the-scenes stills from his collection in the photo gallery - so if you're a Savini fan THE PROWLER is a must-own disc.

Nocturnaloner, Scream Greats is on some European DVD of DAY OF THE DEAD that's currently doing the rounds. Its not credited as such but its gotta be the Fango video.

Thanks to both of you for the info! Looks like my wallet's about to get a bit thinner.

Have any idea of which one? As far as I know, there's currently a UK disc, and a Dutch disc.

I'd say it would be on the Dutch DVD. Just check out the specs and make sure it mentions something about a ~1 hour doco on Tom Savini.
