"Baise Moi" (rape/revenge movie)
"Lucker the Necrophagus" (Pretty hardcore necrophilia flick)

And that's all I can think of as far as what *I* would consider disturbing.

Why France for fucked up stuff anyway? Asia and Italy/Spain seem to have so much more :)

Is Lucker French? I thought it was Belgian, but may have gotten confused.

Man Bites Dog was a good one in terms of intelligently disturbing, but it's not from France, just in French, or the Belgian version of the language.

One non-horror one from France that I found off kilter was Baxter. But really, a lot of the French stuff can be disturing in that fashion...take Jean De Florette. Has some unsettling commentary on the human species, but it's probably not what you were looking for.

There aren't too many horror flicks from France aside from the work of Jean Rollin (at least, not that I'm aware of), but you might want to check out Baby Blood. It's not really disturbing, though. Sexandroide IS distrubing, but in the "How could anyone have thought this was good" fashion.

I agree with Chris, look more towards Asia for the REALLY disturbing films.

I agree with you on MAN BITES DOG, it's one of those films that are so disturbing your not sure if you like it or not.

BAISE MOI pissed me off...It's more or less a hardcore porno movie in reverse. Kind of like a very hardcore version of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE except with two chicks and hardcore sex. I admit, the porn was fun to watch (no, I didn't quite enjoy the rape) but as a whole the flick was shallow. I understand that the book the flick is based on is much better. I guess if you want a porno with a rather unusual plot line you can get BAISE MOI (translated as either RAPE ME or FUCK ME) cheap and uncut at OVERSTOCK.COM..

It's in NTSC and has a few extras and is also quite short.

Honestly and this is not to sound to much like a sex fiend, FRENCH PORN is pretty sick. They're up there with the Germans. They seem to have this bizarre fixation with Rape. While the Germans like to pee and poop on each other (if anyone here is French or German, please take no offense, i should be the sicker fuck, i watch the shit.. except for the poopy flicks, haven't experienced those)..

GERMAN HORROR on the other hand, that's wicked.. Theres one I really want to get, DVD DIABOLIK has it but it's optically censored and only availble through Asia plus its very expensive.. If I can recall the title I post it.

Well, it's not really worth watching. Though the eng. dub can get pretty funny. "See you in Hell, fucker!" I sold mine off awhile back.

I believe Baise Moi can also translate to Kiss Me. I've had some difficulty with this particular phrase because of that. I'm curious to see it, but haven't really gone through the effort of, you know, watching it.

Germany IS a good place for some underground stuff. Buttgereit's work is all worth seeking out, and so is some of Schnass'. Speaking of Schnass, anyone plunked down for the Nikos DVD? Recommendations?

France is putting out good action movies right now, but their horror fare is pretty thin like everyone has said. I can't really say for sure, as I haven't seen it, but Irreversible has a rape scene in it involving Monica Belucci that lasts 9 fucking minutes.

A friend of mine has been pushing me to see it as I guess it's pretty interesting, but there's just no way in hell that I could sit through 9 minutes of a savage rape scene.

French movies

Post by David Austin »

Hey LT!

Dude, you gotta go see IRREVERSIBLE. It stands alongside Tsukamoto's A SNAKE OF JUNE as the best movie released this year.

To the original poster - Another one to check out is Catherine Breillat's FAT GIRL. It's not a very scary or creepy movie, but the final 10 minutes are simply among the most cruel and vicious ever put on celluloid. Your heart will break...trust me...

IRREVERSIBLE director Gaspar Noe's previous film, I STAND ALONE, might be of interest to you as well. If you really dug on Buddy Giovinazzo's COMBAT SHOCK, imagine a French version and you've got I STAND ALONE in a nutshell.

Enjoy.

It stands alongside Tsukamoto's A SNAKE OF JUNE as the best movie released this year.

It's not French, but, it's an excellent recommendation David. One of Tsukamoto's very best. Try the upcoming Haute Tension,AKA Switchblade romance for a gory and slightly twisted French slasher. It'll be released in April of 2004, by Lion's Gate. Review below.I thought Irreversible was slightly overrated. But it seems to have it's fans. Maybe I'll take another look.

[Here's a Toronto film festival entry. A gory horror slasher film from France. A young woman named Marie accompanies her friend Alex to her family's remote house in the French countryside. When a murderous trucker arrives later that night, and begins butchering Marie's parents and brother, Alex somehow eludes his attention, giving her an edge in the gruesome battle that ensues over the fate of Marie. Whom the Trucker(played by the imposing butcher in I Stand Alone) chains up, and kidnapps. The rest of the film involves Alex's pursuit of the trucker, who drives a vehcle VERY similar to the Creeper's truck in Jeepers Creepers.

Some of the gore including a decapitation by bookshelf unit strains credibility as much as the final act surprise revelation does. But the blood flows quite dark red and is usually gushing with as much enthisiasm as this fan inspired slasher. A solid first genre effort by director Alexandre Aja, with taut direction and editing. The ending which incorporates a sapphic twist, not unsimilar to a female version of Hitchcock's Psycho, may disappoint some, and may enrage militant gay audiences. But it's previous 80 minutes, makes this ride worth taking, regardless of final response.

The short Q+A, after the screening with director Aja, and the screenwriter was surprisingly non eventful. As were the questions non confrontational. I was half expecting some PC minded idiot to make a comment about the ending. But it never happened. People were interested in the final revelation but I can't reveal questions and answers unless I post detailed spoilers. The stupidest question which one older women with a nasel drawl asked was what they're parents thought of the movie, and if they're invited back to visit. Aja, said his mother saw it, and liked it. The film has worldwide distribution through director Luc Besson's Europa Pictures. So it will attain distribution on DVD in one form or another.....Eventually.]

UPDATE: North American release date,Spring of 2004.

Crap, I didn't even know Tsukamoto had a new movie! The last one I saw was Bullet Ballet and I loved it. He's really hit his stride over the last few years.

Alas, this isn't a Japanese thread. So back to Irreversible.

I've seen it in a couple of local stores for rent, and the version that we sell at the record store has a sticker that our staff placed on it that prohibits purchase to those under 18, so I don't know if the US version sustained any cuts, John.

I HATED I Stand Alone...

LOVED Irreversible...

While not horror there were 3 French films I watched recently... it was the Taxi series. I really enjoyed the first two while the third one was complete crap. They were written I believe by Luc Besson.

Oh yeah and that fat fuck going on about fucking his daughter in the begining of Irreversible is the douche from I Stand Alone... did I mention how much I hated that one? Not cause I found it to be disturbing with the content of the film... just cause I found it to be weird for the sake of being weird... know what I mean?

I watched Irreversible. Techinically, I REALLY liked what it did. Staging everything to look like one shot and delirious camera work. Storywise, it's a piece of shit. I don't know why the story's presented backwards, because once it's worked to the rape, there's not a whole lot left to see. The script was evidently mostly improvised, and it shows. Characters seem to change motivations from scene to scene, making the film uneven.

I also thought the beating following the rape was more disturbing than the rape itself. I was unaware of the fire extinguisher scene, and at first was like "Wow, they really did a good job" but it got too over the top and obviously CG. I read some reviews after watching the movie, and the fire extinguisher and the rape are what everyone mentions, but the thing that impressed me the most was the severly broken arm, since everything looks like one shot/take.

All told, it just seemed like a rather bland exploitation story that someone tried to turn into an arthouse production. I can't help but wonder if the bulk of the movie's fans aren't just people too ashamed to view straight exploitation...

Those were ALL pretty much my thoughts after first seeing it, Devon. I always wondered exactly why people were calling it a masterwork even though it was just a gimmicked up exploitation film with pretentions.

Especially since these same people blasted Baise Moi, a somewhat more honest exploitation film(although it also had pseudo feminist pretentions) and kept praising Irreversible to no end.

ashamed to view straight exploitation?

By this you mean watching the real thing...hmm last time I checked, that was illegal and thus making it a little harder to find.

Does anyone have any real exploitation films to trade?

Exploitation is not necessarily a documentary. It just means that the product is exploiting something. In the case of Irreversible, it'd be exploiting the lack of sensibility of anyone that decided to watch it.

As for "the real thing," do you mean the violence, or the sex, or what? If you want real sex, watch porn. there's a bunch of video lines devoted to real violence, or you could watch Cops. Personally, I hate the reality stuff, so maybe someone else can steer you in the right direction.

I'ld like to recommand Brotherhood of the Wolf and Dobermann both with Vincent Cassel, and Monica Bellucci (I believe they're husband and wife in real life). You could try Vidocq, but I didn't really like it.

Any confusion on my part was generated by an apparent request on your part for real death or rape movies:
