Okay--here's the part everybody knows from the trailers. There's a whole bunch of fighting. Vampires vs. CGI werewolves. Characters who wear skin-tight black leather and black dusters and black trenchcoats. And they empty thousands of rounds of ammunition all over the place. And they leap around in slow motion. You know--that Matrix stuff.
Wanna know what they do when they're NOT fighting? Well, they burst through doors. They stalk down corridors with a purpose. They parade up and down staircases. And the soundtrack pounds and pounds as they do it. All sorts of really big, really important stuff. And it's all so "goth," they might as well have filmed the damn thing in black-and-white.
Story? Yeah, there's one of those, too... the kind that starts at the end of a LONG history. So people can have hallucinatory flashbacks--the kind that snap, crackle and pop rapid-fire in their poor tormented brains while the soundtrack is cranked up yet another notch. There's cross-breeding, familial betrayal, inescapable destiny...
...is there ONE damn thing in here that BLADE II didn't already do much, much better? And don't bother answering "There were no werewolves in BLADE II." I know there weren't. But there were two breeds of vampire, and it's the same damn thing.
Am I THOROUGHLY missing the boat here? This is supposed to be a hot-ticket item? On two screens at the area's biggest theatre? A "no-pass engagement" even at the drive-in?? This is an event? To me, this is right up there with MATRIX RELOADED (not a compliment coming from me). And I'm not sure it's even any better than THE ORDER, for that matter.
Hey--if I'm wrong, and this is one of the best films of the year, then more power to you, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm never going to knock you for disagreeing with me.
But what was the last truly great "goth" film you've seen since the days of Hammer, eh?
Your move.
Underworld. Just what we needed.

I knew that this one was going to leave a lot to be desired. Let's face it, the Vampire genre has been tapped. There's just not much that you can do with it. Either you pit humans against bloodthirsty vampires who are clearly evil beings, or you put the vampires themselves into some kind of melodrama.
I was hoping that this one would have had the camp sensibility that Blade had and it didn't take itself too seriously.
Looks like I was wrong.

I thought the story line was interesting but I felt a little unfullfilled with the action scenes. Blade was more exciting to me.
The previews made it look like a lot of action. I was disappointed. I left the theater being totally unsure of whether I liked it or not. So a couple days later I came to the conclusion I was happy with the cast (no bad acting really) except that one of the male leading roles looked exactly like scott staab from that stupid Creed band.
I liked to filming and set also.
Ok so now I want to point out the bullshit, maybe someone could help me not HATE about this movie.
****WARNING********
Kind of spoilers....
In the beginning chase scene the werewolf shoots the vampire with the cool Ultra violet bullet. INSTANTLY kills the vampire. Ok, So i thought it was a little silly that NOT ONE other vampire was killed that way. Retarded.
They drive into the river, she's immortal, she passes out, he saves her life. How does that happen. Was is a holy river
She gets stabbed in the shoulder, bleeds and 20 seconds later she passes out. I would of thought she would be a little bit tougher.
If you where trying to kill the driver or the passenger from the roof of a car with a knife, WHY WOULD YOU REPEATETLY STAB IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CAR!!!! thats just silly
Why did Lucien not die when he was shot with the silver nitrate bullet, it seemed that everyone else did.
hmmm, i just dont understand.
just think they left it open for a sequel.
I cant wait for the new Rock movie, maybe that will be good.

Saw this over the weekend and must admit that I was on middle ground when it was over. After reading Remo's review I was expecting a huge disappointment, but I still wanted to check it out and so I went. I didn't dislike it as much as Remo, but it did indeed leave a lot to be desired. Some of the gore and action scenes were cool but it was the stuff in between that ruined the movie. Even at two hours this movie felt too long in some spots and they could have trimmed out some of the boring nonsense. The story could have also used a little more coherence to hold things together. Kate Beckinsale was actually pretty decent in what will certainly be an unmemorable film on her resume. In the end, I'm not sorry that I saw it but I just wish it could have been more. I also wish that every darn movie that comes out these days didn't have to borrow something from THE MATRIX (just a suggestion).
HOUSE OF THE DEAD is finally opening up this weekend and I plan to be there Friday night regardless of how it turns out. I'm itching for some decent horror and I hope it will at least deliver the goods.
