Nothing is sacred: Dimension to remake Hills...

Post by Latte Thunder »

Looks like The Hills Have Eyes is next on the chopping block to be remade.

Creature Corner reports that it's being written and directed by the writer and director of the French flick Haute Tension. I've heard that people are going bonkers for that movie, but I haven't seen it so I don't know.

At the very least, they should recast Michael Berryman, he looks now pretty much like he did back then so why not? I can't imagine what they'll do to make this movie a little more palatable to modern horrorgoing audiences. I imagine the family will be replaced by a trailer full of teenagers.

I heard somewhere (memory is for shit) that Wes Craven was interested in doing a remake. I don't think he wanted to direct the project though. I really don't understand why (other than money) they would do this. "Hills Have Eyes" is far from a commercial film. You really have to understand the genre to appreciate it and looking at today's lame and tame standards, it's not going to hold a candle to the orginal.

Even the awful PART 2 has merit over a remake.

Don't speak too soon.

I saw this article first at Creature Corner and they rarely post the information straight from the source. Johnny Butane usually just paraphrases what he reads and posts it fresh on his site. The next day, I caught the same news at Dark Horizons and they posted the original Variety article and along with a remake of Hills someone is also in the process of remaking Amityville Horror.

The problem with all these horror remakes is that people are actually going to see them, and when they hit video, people rent them. Money is going into these projects and Hollywood doesn't guage viewer opinions by actual opinions, they guage it by how much money the movie made. The idea is that if money is coming in, then people are seeing it and if it makes enough money, they have the impression that the remake trend is what people want... and it's so much easier to take something old and refurbish it for a new generation than to take a chance on something new and original.

The only reason remake fever bothers me is because nothing new is coming out, only these remakes, and since I like a lot of the original movies, I have no desire to check in and see how these remakes turn out. All I want is a new horror movie but they never come.

The AMITYVILLE remake is now going to be a partnership effort with two different film companies since they were both doing a remake at the same time. This is probably one remake I wouldn't have any objections too, I was always pissed off with the first one.

It said to follow the book more closely and I would also guess that with today's technology this is probably the ONLY horror film worthy of CGI..

I think Latte hit the nail on the head with his comments on this whole "remake" trend. As long as these remakes are successful, then studios will keep churning them out. Look at how well the remake of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE did. That's the kind of thing movie execs take note of regardless of the quality of the film (although I did find the TCM remake to be fairly decent). Having said that, it will be interesting to see how the remake of DAWN OF THE DEAD fares.

As for HILLS, I have my doubts but I'll still probably check it out if it ever gets made. Just because it's a remake doesn't mean it will change my opinion of the original, but sometimes they can be good in their own right (i.e THE THING and THE FLY).

It scares me to thing what they will see fit to remake next. Maybe I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE starring Jennifer Love Hewitt:)
