Shaun of the Dead--don't be fooled by the "R"

Post by Latte Thunder »

Alright, it's just Shaun of the Dead, but if this doesn't look like something Python would have made back in the day, I don't know what is. I can't wait to see it... and Universal Studios must really like zombies.

Interesting how they use the original Dawn music in the trailer. Makes me wonder if it's in the rest of the movie.

Yeah, the reviews of the film I've read say that's pretty much what the film is....a cross between a Monty movie and a Romero zombie flick......and it's supposed to be kick ass too.

Probably the only way I'll be able to see it. I know this one won't run locally. Unfortunately, the only Shaun torrents I've seen so far are of Cams and I just can't stand those.

I saw this last night. The trailer makes it look a lot sillier than it really is. The story is such:

Shaun is a loser. He's 29 and works retail selling home theater gear. He shares a house with an old friend and his best friend who is an even bigger loser than Shaun. but doesn't seem to care much. Shaun's girlfriend is tired of going to the same pub every night with her friends, his step father is an ass, everything sucks for this guy who's just spinning his wheels in life. The kick in the ass comes when his girlfriend kicks him to the curb. Things couldn't possibly get any worse, that is until his London suburb is infested with the living dead. Suddenly, Shaun finds the strength to survive and sort his life out.

As a comedy, it's pretty typical of a british comedy. The humor is sometimes foolish, but always dry. As a horror movie, it works surprisingly well. You can pick out all the odes to Night, Dawn and Day and it has a fair bit of gore going on throughout. The zombie makeup is pretty decent, too.

It'll inevitably end up on DVD, so it's definitely worth a rent when it comes down.

Fucking fantastic movie. Fucking funny, too. The British sense of humour probably translates a little better down here but, wow, like you say, Latte - even just the horror works well.

Definitely a zombie movie to be cherished by the fans. The ghouls themselves are classic Romero types and it includes the best mauling since Rhodes bought it in DAY OF THE DEAD, too...

I'll be definitely heading to the cinema if and when it opens in these parts. 28 DAYS LATER took a good year so I'm not holding my breath.

Very impressive.

Also worth mentioning, the soundtrack is also really good. There are several remixes of the Goblin soundtrack for Dawn of the Dead that are really cool.

Watched this the other night and loved it! I don't think it was a good example of British humor though....it was actually FUNNY! :D
I think the best thing I can say about it is that everytime I thought of something I would point out that was good, I thought of something else in it equally worth mentioning. So I won't bother listing any details. It's just a damn fine horror/comedy from start to finish.

FWIW, I did get it off bitTorrent and if it was from a camera, it still looked and sounded ok. I'd say go ahead and preview it from there, and then buy the DVD when it comes out. This is definitely one you'll want to own.

Dylan, you are definetly the anit-me.

Anybody got a NTSC VCD-R (or DVD-R) they can send me? I'm getting rid off a ton of music/movies, so I might have something good to trade.

There's actually a half-decent quality screener floating around out there that puts all of those cam jobs to shame.

I've watched this three times thus far, and may squeeze in a couple more viewings before it hits the cinemas down here in late October - which I'll go support.

The R2 UK PAL DVD will be out long before then, however. Probably within the next coupla months or so.

I may be able to help you out, 138, if you can't get someone a little closer to your whereabouts to fix you up first.

Thanks Griff.

Don't know if it's getting a theatrical release 'round here. Maybe for Halloween? That would be cool, 'cause we hit Aus in late Dec, so it won't be playing anymore there.

Spitting in Romero's face?

Post by impetigo-on-the-brain »

I totally think that this Shaun of the dead is totally bullshit there making a joke out of the best zombie movies ever. If i was Romero i would be totally offended. I think its gonna turn out like another scray movie and just spoff all the good movies and just drive most good movies into the ground..........The re-make of Dawn of the dead was a big enough joke why not just phase it out. Thats my view on this whole situation. also i am predicting there will be a whole new group of zombie movie fans gone to shit over these gay movies like 28 days later. They will never learn of the truely good movies. Like Zombie one of the greatest movies ever made on the topis of well zombies. Will they ever see this master piece or just suck?

Sorry, but you're just flat out wrong. Had you cited Resident Evil, House of the Dead or Versus as you're examples, fine. But the three you mention are all damn fine movies.

There's a trailer for SOTD (which was fucking awesome) on a DVD that will be coming out in October that I unfortunately can't discuss. Shitty movie (the DVD that is) anyway so noone would really give a damn :) Anyway, I *think* it said coming soon in theaters.

You are in dire need of a sense of humor.

your just bullshitting yourself!

House of the dead and Resident evil blew...... all though Versus was an exellent movie! The forest of reserection. I see the new resident Evil looks like it has some good things to it. it's an awesome game anyways. I don't think i'm in need of a sense of humor. I just think they shouldn't do that shit. if the movies were mega awesome the first time whats the point of remaking them? What do you think of all these new movies? I think it might bring some good in that the prices on stuff should go down. They will release more copie sof movies or atleast in my thoguths it should.......but communsim was supposed to ork too.

Thing is, no one is forcing you to see ANY movie, so if a remake or something offends your sensibilities, it's easier to just not see it than to flip your lid and act as if high holy art is being pissed on. Trust me on this. It's really just that easy.

As for new movies, America is still sucking the fat dick of the studio system so nothing new in the horror department really interests me. Every now and then, something from an American indie slips through the cracks and turns out to be worth checking out and rarer still, the majors release something worth paying for. For instance, search for the Dawn of the Dead remake review thread. I wrote an extremely long review of it which basically makes slow, sweet love to Zack Snyder's movie. I thought the DotD remake was extremely well done. It skirts way around the source material and there's no comparison at all, but on it's own, it's a visceral and intense movie that really should never have come from an American studio, period. For a system so rife with low standards and sappy sweet third acts, Dawn was a huge kick in the ass from an art standpoint and a financial standpoint. It did what few movies were willing to do. It had a very hard R rating and even I, the veteran gore hound, was shocked a little by some of the shit they did.

As for Shaun of the Dead, you really have to see more than trailer before you can take a dump on it. I'll reiterate, not only is it very funny, it's also a very good zombie movie. It's not blaspheming it's source material at all. It pays homage in a way that's not trite like 28 Days Later (a movie I liked despite it's shortcomings and unoriginality) and House of 1000 Corpses. IF you get the opportunity to see it, I recommend that you look it up. It's not like these recent video game adaptations that just fucking suck. Those pander to the braindead mallrat types, Shaun of the Dead is a legitimately good movie.

Indeed. I rewatched the Dawn remake last night, rewatched 28 Days Later last week, and Shaun of the Dead the week before (as well as The Undead). In a lot of ways, I think Shaun might be my favorite of the bunch. The characters (and the actors who play them) are great. The script is really first rate too.

Shaun of the Dead--don't be fooled by the "R"

Post by Remo D »

I know this movie has received plenty of coverage here already, but I'm referring specifically to the brand-new American theatrical release.

If anyone was concerned at all that the "R" rating meant that the film was going to be "gutted," fear not. There's a certain moment (and you probably already know it) that will make you say "Well, if they left THAT in, they'd leave ANYTHING in!" And they did. Once again, I'm glad I held out for the big screen before seeing the film at all.

Oh, and if you HAVEN'T seen it? It's all true. It's great as a comedy and it's great as a zombie film... hell, you don't need ME for this one. Just letting you know it's uncut.

GO!

I'm gonna go as soon as posible to check it out. If Romero liked it, it has to have some good points!

Just got back from the theater. This movie is great. Funniest horror movie since Dog Soldiers.

Liked the dialog nods to NOTLD (only Jackie and I laughed at that one) and the subtle nod to one of the bigger inspirations, Evil Dead.

Fucking awesome on the big screen, one can pick out a lot more of the little details that way. This movie definitely deserves repeated viewing!
