Scary Movie Night
Scary Movie Night
My best friend is in town and we are planning on having our annual scary movie night. We usually rent old classic scary movies, and some of our cheesy favorites. We've been talking about this for weeks and I just don't know what good horror films to rent that would make for a whole night of horrific fun. Neither of us have seen Ringu, so we were going to get that one. Anyone seen it? Any suggestions?

Versus is a Japanese zombie, Yakuza, swordfight movie. It rules.
For cheese, get some Andreas Schnass.

Good movie not scary not too gory just a great story with a great ending. If you like movies with more nihilistic endings check it out.
Wheneve I'm gonna have a night like that, I usually prefer to start with a comedy, then maybe a lighter horror and then the full on scares. Something like The Silence of the Hams first, followed by a classic like Frankenstein (or if you've seen that too many times, maybe try somthing like Dracula's Daughter, which is rather underrated, I think), and then top it off with something like Re-Animator.
Of course, it's hard to say what you should get when we don't know what you've seen or have available to you. Here's some you should be able to get anywhere, (even Blockbuster) and that you may have overlooked.
The Uninvited- a classic 1940s ghost story with Ray Milland.
The Changeling- Another ghost story, this one scared the shit outta me when I was younger. Maybe not terrifying, but I think it still holds up pretty well.
The Unnamable-ok, lots of people hate this movie and it's sequel, but I have a soft spot for it. Cheesy for sure, but definitely in the right spirit.
Night of the Demons- make sure you only watch the first one. Most reviews say part 2 is better, but they are flat out wrong.
Scarecrows- If you find this one at all, it will only be on VHS. But if you do find it, you won't be disappointed. Simple, yet well done.
Anguish- Another that I think most people are sort of divided on, I really like it. One of those movies that really seems to pick up steam.
Popcorn- Again, depending on who you talk to, it's garbage, but I feel it's definitely in the spirit of what it sounds like you are going for.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers-You should already have seen this, but if not, wait no longer. Both versions are good, but the 1954 version is best.
Anyway, not saying these are the BEST movies you can seen, but if you are looking for a combo of both classic and cheese, these might do.

I really wouldn't say there's much cheesiness at all in "Phantasm". It scared the shit out of me when I first saw it at the BelKirk drive-in at age 12.

Have you seen it since? It's pretty cheesy. The acting is just hilarious.

I can't believe you never saw Phantasm. It's even harder to believe you didn't like it. Not sure why you thought it was hilarious. You aren't one of those people who go to midnight movies and laugh incessantly, whether it's appropriate to do so or not, are you?
I'm a little curious to know what classics you watched?

haha. NO. I do not laugh incessantly at the movies. Phantasm was just rediculous. Admittedly, it did make me jump at one point, but otherwise, I just thought it was silly.
We watched Phantasm, Salem's Lot and Pet Cemetery before I passed out. I have to get up for work early in the AM.

So Salem's Lot and Pet Cemetery are classics and Phantasm is cheese? I think I am beginning to understand this all. I still gotta know what the hell made Phantasm so "cheesy" and "rediculous", I simply don't understand how one could get that impression.
