Well, here I was all set to check out ANACONDAS this weekend... and our local arthouse, with NO warning, throws JU-ON on the screen!
Here's my question.
My twelve-year-old daughter is a RING fanatic. She saw the American film first, natch. She's seen it a dozen times and claims it as one of her favorites.
However, she allows that RINGU would have been the scarier film had she seen it first. And she's into the Japanese RING 2 and RING 0, as well.
And, of course, here comes Sarah Michelle Gellar in the American remake of THE GRUDGE.
So, I thought to myself, why not give my daughter an opportunity to have the crap scared out of her with an authentic Japanese horror film on the big screen BEFORE she sees the remake?
Knowing her bent for horror films (surprise surprise), do you think it would be completely inappropriate for me to let her see JU-ON?
Semi-porn or ultra-hard gore are my concerns... good old, plain old SCARES don't count--that's what she wants.
Any and all advice will be taken seriously--thanks!

Well, I'm assuming you are going with her so, yeah, go for it. I don't recall any sex of any kind in the movie, nor much in the way of gore. And if you haven't seen any of the previous movies yet, you might just enjoy it alot more than I did since all the tactics will be new to you. I say go. It's pretty much a straight up ghost story.

There isn't any concern as far as JU-ON is concerned. I personally found it to be a bit boring with only a few scares but I'll tell ya' this, when the scares hit, they hit with a bang. There isn't anything to worry about but a few weird images and if she can handle the other stuff than she can sit through this.
I started my venture in the realm of horror at around 11 or 12, this was before the blockbuster revolution, so I kind of got a way with a lot of shit via my local mom and pop shop. Than again my parents weren't paying much attention. Look what's happen! ha ha ha !

I'd imagine for a 12 year old it'll be a downright terrifying experience.
For a 12-YEAR-OLD? Good God, what about ME??!!
I don't know how many of you got to see this on the big screen, but I have seen NOTHING this year that comes close to the scare value of JU-ON.
My daughter was freaked out (but she's fine), my wife couldn't sit still for a minute, and I was frequently holding my breath...
BRAVO. We FINALLY have the big-screen American release horror film to beat for the year 2004. Everyone else can take a back seat for now.
Unless, of course, THE GRUDGE comes out on top.

Ju On
Isn't the second V-cinema a paste and patch job of about 45 minutes of the first? Out of a 75 minute running time that's not much of a movie. Maybe it has more scares and clears up some details?
The theatrical Ju On has it's script contrivances, but for scare value alone it's one of the best of the last 3 years. The American remake has a lot to live up to.

And to that end, it's got the same director and it's set in Japan. Judging from the trailer I saw, he's apparently going with the "shot-for-shot remake" approach, with SMG as a nurse in Japan... the trailer shows quick cuts of the security guard bit, the stairwell crawl, the face in the elevator windows, the hand in the hair, and a little boy letting out a cat screech.
But how much you wanna bet they'll pretty it up just a bit before they get to the ending?
Oh, by the way, I never saw the first two--lack of a multiregion player, my big-screen obsession and the amount of discs I have to cover for VW each month keep me from being import-savvy. Sometimes it's a curse--but sometimes it's a blessing, as it was in this case--to have seen JU-ON on video first would have stuck a pin in the theatrical experience, like it or not. Walking into that movie COLD was the best thing that's happened to me at the movies all year.

Yuppers... the second V Cinema version uses ALOT of the same footage from the first V Cinema. Out of the two V Cinema versions I like the second one the best as it feels more "complete" to me, explains more. What they should of done is combine the first two to make a whole movie.
Though the first V Cinema does have a few scares in it's own right (the chick who played GoGo in Kill Bill, her scene in the school creeps me out).
The thing I like most about the JuOn movies is how you are just basically fucked. You can not run, you can not hide... and how most of it actually happens during the day instead of your usual fright movies where the bad things happen at night.

Heh! I figured we're all a little jaded around here, but I have to admit, Ju-On had me biting my nails every time I heard that guttural groan coming.Originally posted by Remo D

I showed it to a friend of mine a couple of weeks ago and I hadn't seen anyone cover their eyes at a horror movie since I was 10, but this 28 year old non-horror buff pal of mine had his eyes covered a couple of times. I really can't say I blame him much.
