"Constatine"?

Post by stypees back »

Anyone planning on seeing this? The previews make it look like a goofy "Matrix" like horror flick. It looks kind of interesting but even the trailers make Keanu's perfomance look bad, which is an understatement.

I'm a big Alan Moore fan and a big Hellblazer fan and I just know that this is going to be a disaster. The John Constantine character is one of the coolest in the whole DC continuity an the fact that they cast Neo as the lead has me believing that they don't understand the book at all.

Constantine is a brit... Tim Roth would have been the perfect choice for the role.

Understand it? Hell, it looks like they've likely never even read it. It looks pretty awful from the previews and it sucks that good folks like Kimberly will get their first exposure to the character in such a shitty way. Tim Roth would have been better, even the original idea of Kiefer Sutherland would have been better (assuming he could pull off the accent, he sure looks the part anyway). I'll probably still see it but I'm also expecting the worst. Hopefully they'll at least throw in a brief Swamp Thing cameo.

I've seen it and it is PRETTY DAMN GOOD

Post by wofshevy »

I went to a screening and I was very surprised at how good this is. I love the Garth Innis run on this series and this story is based on one of his story lines. Now I will be the first to admit that I was not all that thrilled buy the casting of Keanu as Constantine. I do have to say that I am however not one of his detractors. I think the guy is a VERY good actor and in the right parts is GREAT. He hits it here. When I went to see this I was prepared not to like it. But I did go in KNOWING that they had changed Constantine from British to American. But for the most part they do keep the spirit of the comic in the movie and for that I am very happy. It is a horror film. There are some Great moments. I think that most people will not know this is based on a comic and that may be for the better because if they did they may have written if off like many of the Comic Fans have. I say give it a chance. I think if you do you will like it.

Keanu = Dog shit.
Best roll? Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure. Why? Because he was playing himself, a doo-fus.
He cannot act, and he sounds like he's being dubbed in a bad Italian movie...

PS: The Matrix is an over rated turd and Constantine looks like a super sized CGI shitfest with extra mayo.

Actually, I thought Keanu was pretty good in "The Gift" but otherwise, I agree entirely.

His best roles are THE RIVERS EDGE and POINT BREAK. And dont forget his role in FREAKS. I like the FIRSt MATRIX a lot. The last 2 were ok but the first is the best.

For me, it was nothing special, but it was nothing terrible, either. I've never read the HELLBLAZER comics and I'm not immediately put off by the sight of Keanu Reeves (hated him in B.S. DRACULA but thought he was good in other things--especially, as mentioned, THE GIFT). And CONSTANTINE was more entertaining than MATRIX RELOADED where I came in!

Basically, you've got a bunch of those MATRIX-y motion control effects (waterdrops, bullets, broken glass hovering in midair) in a movie that shuffles THE EXORCIST, THE PROPHECY and BLADE. And it's a bit long, but at least they keep things watchable, and there are a few moments worth waiting for (gotta admit, I really liked it when our hero threatened a demon with eternity in heaven...), and the cast is generally effective (also worth waiting for is Peter Stormare's appearance as Lucifer).

Possession, redemption, demon attacks and lots of bang-bang with holy weapons. You know the drill. There's a disgraced priest, and the demons like to do rather pointless things before attacking ("hey, we're in a bowling alley, so why don't we scare the guy by activating all the pin-setting equipment first?").

Fun effects, okay pacing--an enjoyable enough diversion for me. But we're still waiting for the first genuinely GOOD HORROR FILM of 2005.

Remo pretty much hit it on the nose on this one. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but it also wasn't as good as it could have been. Longtime fans will probably like it less than those new to the character. For the most part, Keanu played it rather downbeat and the Constantine I know is basically an overconfident wise ass and not the sort of guy you'd wanna put your trust in either. They don't portray him as a goody-goody by any means, but I always liked the aspect of the books that most of his friends are dead and usually, directly or indirectly, because of him. I think this is a key element of his character that they should have included. I didn't care for the Lucifer character myself. The inclusion of Papa Midnite and his club was cool though.

A few other points. There is a brief but really cool Martin Balsam/Psycho scene when the Angela character gets pulled out of a window. And was it my imagination or was that the same cane from "The Wolf Man" that John separates before making his gun?
