Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Post by Remo D »

Well, after all the hype... here it is. Where to begin?

There is PLENTY of ridiculous stuff to be found here--and Roger-Dodger beat me to a couple of the true doozies. But let's be fair--any of us would be perfectly capable of finding them on our own. I mean... imagine the church scene from Alice's perspective. "Hmm... here I am, riding my motorcycle. I'm passing a church. You know, I bet there's trouble going on in there. I think I'd better jump my motorcycle THROUGH A STAINED GLASS WINDOW... just in case!!!"

Oh, and Nemesis? Sorry your name didn't make the title--probably because STAR TREK beat you to it, right? But it's nice to see Chatterer the Cenobite get his own co-starring role. So much for design. And yeah--why does the super-fighting-force blast away at his body armor and not ONCE aim for his head? Sure--maybe he has bulletproof leather skin around his skull, too, but at least AIM for it once just to prove it?

And yet... and yet... it's still a lot of fun, and that's where I leave Roger behind (yet again). It DOES connect properly from the first film, it does proceed in a believable direction from there, and I've seen FAR more boring zombies in action. Not to beat a dead horse (or an undead dog), but there are significantly lower watermarks in the zombie-film-based-on-a-video-game sweepstakes. Sure, there are some cheesy characters (not to mention non-entities who get eaten before we even learn their NAMES) and plenty of predictable "oh, here's where the zombie jumps out" bits. On the other hand, there's one hell of a jump early on which has nothing to do with a zombie attack! It's not entirely bloodless, either--but sorry, still no graphic flesh-munching. But you DO get Milla Jovovich as Alice again. (I still haven't seen either TOMB RAIDER movie.)

Pity the film itself made no use of the trailer material with the phony cosmetic commercial or the product line it was supposedly introducing. Something tells me CATWOMAN had something to do with that! The DVD might contain some interesting deleted scenes...

And finally... pity me if you must... but when they finally hit the ending of this installment, I actually found myself willing to sit through another! Good grief, this is hardly award-winning script material, but I was genuinely interested in what was going to happen next! (Perhaps game players already know? I have no experience here and have no idea how faithful the movies are to the game concepts.)

Alexander Witt certainly knows how to keep things moving and visually interesting as a director... as for Anderson? I'd rather see him keeping an even keel here than something I admire as much as the ALIEN franchise down to a similar video game level.

Profundity? No. Just plain fun? Sure, why not?

Spoiler.

Yes.

Near the end.

Not as "fully" as the first time around, but a good look anyway.

LOVE the tiny nips standing at attention like little soldiers!
Too bad it wasnt more...but...i will take what visual I can get.

As far as the movie.....predictable in some spots, corny in others. Love the lickers!!
Not as much flesh munching as the last film...that was lame...but a good set up for PART 3.

Or maybe it's not a spoiler... anyhoo... what was up with Nemesis turning all good? They had his look down even to him saying STARS when taking out a bunch of STARS agents.

Other problem was that I hated on some of those zombie scenes... I don't know what kind of shot you would call it but that like slow-mo zippy camera bullshit. Hated that...

It was fun... in a check your brain at the door kind of way. I still like the first one way better (and even though people bash it).

Should have made the movies more like the games. Have a little mystery to it. Search for pieces of the puzzle...clues...make it more interesting.

But, they already have my money, and they will get more when part 3 comes out.

Not the best, not the worst ... but goddamn I was entertained, just a good fukin' movie. I totally agree however, with the camera thing, to damn distracting and I couldn't appreciate the zombies makeup effects.

The lurkers and dogs did look better, but that's not saying much. I didn't mind it, but it seemed like even more of an action movie than the first one.

reply - I think they were trying to imply that the Nemesis guy had a deep connection w/ Milla, and so in the end regained control of himself. I guess it's no less believable than the rest of the film.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, probably even more than the first. It sure had it's dumb bits as mentioned earlier, but for some reason the zombie as ultimate soldier idea worked better here for me than it has in other movies. I was actually not liking the movie at all for the first 20-30 minutes or so but it managed to win me over by the time it was over. One thing I didn't see mentioned was how Alice, Jill and the reporter chick had a black male companion until he was killed...only to be IMMEDIATELY replaced by another black guy. Like the group had a quota or something. Coincidence I'm sure (and I hope) but it seemed pretty blatant. Also, I like how an entire towned got walled off in a mere 13 hours. Whoever pulled that off, we could've used them on the Big Dig.

Eh, it was ok

Post by Wrathchild862000 »

Resident Evil: Apocalypse was ok (better than the original, that's definate!).
I just wish they'd have someone who's familiar with zombie horror direct the next resident evil movie (if they do make one). I thought there was too much matrix style martial arts in the movie (especially with the freeze frame kicks in the air).

And, not to be rude or anything, but this section of the message board specified that it wasn't for mainstream horror movies. So perhaps you might want to talk about this movie in "The Beaten Track" (it specifies it's for mainstream flicks). That's all.
