Wow, I must admit, the trailer looks pretty, well, empty. And I really don't like that new look Gigan. I mean, I really really don't like it.

And isn't that the same guy who directed Versus? I'm already expecting this to be boring and overrated then. Crap. Well, I've been wrong before, but so far I'm already angry at this movie.

No movie that brings back all of these monsters can be all bad.

I mean, come on--how long has it been since we've seen ANGUIRUS??!!!

And they've got the moxie to include Minilla (formerly Minya), Hedorah the Smog Monster...

...and King Freaking CAESAR??? (that's King Seesar to us)!

Good grief, this is going to be one to remember!

If they bring them all back and make them look as bad as that stupid ass "extreme" Gigan, it will be all bad.

Oh well, it's too early to completely dismiss it. But I'm not even remotely excited judging by what little there is to see so far.

Ryuhei Kitamura was the guy who did Versus. Like Dave said, I'm expecting a lot of slow camera pans while the rubber suits pose and glare at each other for ten minutes at a time.

Is this really going to be the very last Godzilla film ever made?

Someone told me last night that they were not gonna make another Godzilla movie for 10 years after this for some reason. I wouldn't mind if they slowed down a little, but not 10 years. And I don't know for a fact that this is true.

I read the same thing, Dave. Hence the name Final Wars and this big battle royale of rubber suits. It's disappointing as I've come to enjoy the annual stompfests.

Yeah,thanks. Mad Foxes is hilarious.

Final Wars according to Toho will in fact be the last Godzilla film for at least 8 years. The last few G films have not done well at the boxoffice, so they decided to thrown everything into this last one.

Pics of all the other monsters in this movie have been added. I don't like the Rodan that much, though it is better than the Gigan. But fortunately all the rest look ok. It would be nice if Ghidorah and Baragon could be in it, but I suppose we just saw them in GMK. But if this is gonna be the last for a long time, is it too much to ask for the return of Jett Jaguar??

I finally saw it!

Post by Chris Slack »

Last night I finally got the opportunity to see “Godzilla Final Wars” on the big screen at the Seattle International Film Festival. I have purposely avoided all reviews of this just so my opinion wouldn’t be swayed in the least as I’m a huge Godzilla/Kaiju fanboy and wanted to make up my mind for myself.

I’m going to avoid going into much detail on the story, it’s best summed up by saying an alien race (known as the Xilens) land on earth and take control of the monsters of the world, setting them loose on such locations as New York, Denver, Sydney, Tokyo (duh), Paris, Germany and other major cities. The “Earth Defense Force”, a group of mutants with extraordinary fighting abilities and technology, set out to defend the Earth against the monsters only to find out that the aliens and monsters are too strong. With this fact against them they must enlist the aid of the King of the Monsters, Godzilla.

The monsters involved include the following: Godzilla, Monster X, Mothra, King Ghidora, Rodan, Angilas, Gigan, Manda, Kumunga, Kamakaris, Ebirah, Minya, King Seasar, Hedorah, and one other monster who I’m not going to name, let’s just say that it’s the only fully CGI moster in the whole film. There’s at least a good 45 minutes of hardcore monster action in this one so people looking for the crush-kill-destroy action the last few (in my opinion) just haven’t had enough of.

Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Azumi, etc.) did a commendable job at the helm of “Godzilla Final Wars”, the monster sequences were very well done, as were the human martial arts sequences. However there was a little too much human vs. human fighting for my blood. The one bonus of all the human fighting is that it helped the movie to flow at a very brisk pace throughout the entire film, never a dull moment. We were also treated to some of the worst English language actors in a Japanese film ever; some of the dialogue was so bad it was laughable.

All things said and done, I consider “Godzilla Final Wars” to be the best G-film since “Godzilla VS Destroyer” and would wholeheartedly recommend it to any Godzilla fanboy out there. While I did find myself shaking my head in utter disbelief at times the movie was good enough to keep a shit eating grin on my face for the duration of the film, and had me cheering like a pro wrestling fan at the appearance of each monster and during the MANY battles. If you like Godzilla you MUST see this one, I’m fairly confident that you will not be disappointed. If one is not a Godzilla fan they would probably find the whole thing absurd and laughable. Too bad for them, I’m a Godzilla fanboy and damned proud of it. I had more fun watching this movie than I have had for a long time.

5/5

Well, this is good to hear. I'd only heard a couple reviews before this and they were not flattering. Any idea when the domestic dvd comes out?

I'm waiting for a version to be released with English subtitles that doesn't cost 80 dollars :)

I actually plan to go see it this Sunday. With all due respect Chris, my hopes still aren't too high. So far I think yours is the only positive review I've read.

Harvey Fenton saw it at Fantasia 2005, and told me he loved it. That would make it 3 good reviews.

I can't say I like Godzilla myself, but I do watch some from time to time.

In all truthfullness I think that "Final Wars" is best suited for the true Godzilla fanboy such as myself. Someone with a casual interest in the Big G would more than likely dismiss it as cheese.

Well, Chris I never should have doubted you. I absolutely LOVED it! It wasn't perfect, but I think the last time I had this much fun watching a movie was the first time I saw Wild Zero. I had no idea that it was really basically a comedy! But in being funny, I don't think it paid any disrespect to the genre. The Matrix style fighting by the mutants I could have done without and I really was disappointed that Mothra showed up without the two fairies singing the summoning song, but otherwise it was fantastic. I liked that most of the monster fights earlier on were not overly long and was also really glad to see the way it ended. Favorite line of the movie? "It says so on the wall."
