Request: Where to find...

Post by stypees back »

Now that the BOOTLEG thing is pretty much deterating and being that I don't download stuff A) I'm paranoid B) I didn't spend $8,000 on an editing suite to download illegal crap.

So here's my request:

I've ordered from SUPER HAPPY FUN and they are "okay" but I was wondering if there are any other sites out there that carry the truly hard to find stuff on DVD or DVD R or PAL. I always buy from Diabolick, Joe's a really cool guy. But when you are searching for just about anything that is not on DVD in any format, where do you go?

I came across this site which is ironically a sponser for AMAZON.COM. They are obviously selling really bad bootleged VHS copies..

http://www.horrortheatervideo.com/

Anyone have any good reccomendations? I want an UNCUT/UNCENSORED version of that film (brain fart) that stars Cronenberg and Lynch (?), freaking title left my head.. It's got all this wack out religious symbolism and got a censored release in Asia? I know somebody out there know's what the hell I'm talking about..

I'd also like to look into other stuff. None of that autopsy shit, just fun horror and graphic nudity.. Ya' know what I'm talking about you sick perverts!

There are a few bootleg companies tucked away in my bookmarks.

http://www.revok.com/ , I've never ordered from them, though they appear to have a reputation for having quality stuff.

This place, http://www.vsom.com/. Apparently there is much stuff here that can be duped.

Back in days when I would trade tapes with people (92-97), there was one guy who always had the goods. After the bootleg days were over, he went legit and started a mail order business. His name is Ken Kish, and his store was called Video Wasteland, and it is based out of Ohio I believe. I just saw an ad in Rue Morgue, so he's still in business, and if he can'r get it, no one can. Tell him hi from me, if you contact him.

Take care

Ken Kish rules!

It's Cinema Wasteland now--at least, that's what the convention he runs is named. He's a great guy and he'll hook you up, no two ways about it.

Wasn't Video Wasteland the sort of horror fans Netflix? I think I remember a company that let you rent tapes of really obscure stuff by mail order. Can't quite remember their name. Sounds like Video Wasteland.

I don't know how VSoM is these days, but back when I bought from them in the mid-90s, they fucking sucked. They had a shitload of tapes and just about anything you wanted, but the quality was always terrible. I know they source a lot of their DVDs from their old tape stock, so a lot of the featured titles on the list are really crappy fourth gen tapes transferred to DVD. I's been years since I've bought from them, though, so you never know. They may have shaped up. I saw their website a while back and their catalog featured more rough porno from Germany than anything else.

Revok also used to be kind of shady, but he has some nice exclusive DVD boots that no one else really has. He's got all the Jodorowsky movies on disc, too, which is a total bonus. He also sells posters for some cool flicks.

The early 90s were the glory days for video bootleggers, with so many folks to choose nicely duped Hong Kong,Euro, and ultra-rare exploitation drive-in fare from, ranging from the likes of Louis Paul(Blood Times),Rick Sullivan(Gore Gazette),Chas. Balun(Deep Red),Donald Farmer(various names),that dude in Florida(who later transformed his company into the very legit Unearthed Films),Video Graveyard,Tom Simmons(Video Junkie),Pat Hoed(a.k.a.:wrestling commentator Larry Rivera),some East Coast-based dude named Alan Hale, the Texas-based Tapes Of Terror, some San Diego-based Asian action-hawking dude(Video Maniac I think was his company's name),and our very own Shawn Smith Lewis(Blackest Heart),for it didn't matter what quality you always got the tapes in,for they were always fun and very cool to collect various titles to put in your frequently growing collection(which DVD has pretty much replaced, with their wise use of widescreens, trailers, and various behind-the-scenes info).

Yeah, the 90s were quite the times back then(even though I was pretty much broke during those times, which is another story altogether).

Haha! I remember Revok had these 2 Fulci tapes that were "originals from Japan" for $50 each (House By The Cemetary was one, I forget the other.) and they turned out to be fakes. I ordered from them about that time and the tapes I got (not the 2 I just mentioned) were pretty good. As for VSOM, I never ordered from them but at least they don't appear to be charging a fucking "membership fee" to first time customers anymore.

Yeah, Ken is a really cool guy, and knows his stuff. Maybe one of these days i'll take a trip and hit one of his shows. On the one hand, i'm glad as hell that any movie of worth in the genre is getting a DVD release, but on the other hand, I do miss the trading/bootlegging days as well. It was a lot of fun trying to find something in an obscure Vietnamese or Japanese shop, and suprise everyone with it. I met my best friend that way (I was selling HK boots at a comic show), and for that I am greatful.

One of my old favorites was Video Screams. They have TONS of titles, the quality on all the ones I used to buy were imo rated accurately by their quality rating system. Not sure what they are charging now but they were really cheap back then.
