Bands where every member is critical to the sound
I was listening to Van Halen II today, and I realized that all four members of that band each contribute something that nobody else can. Alex, Eddie, and David need no explanation. Michael Anthony's backing vocals make him untouchable as well. There are not many bands out there in which every single member is critical to their sound. When Sammy Hagar came in, it was a totally different band (Not a bad one, I might add). If any of the other members had been swapped, the sound would have completely changed as well.
So, what do you think are some other bands like that?
My picks:
Van Halen
Led Zeppelin
Rush
Cream
Pink Floyd
The Police
The "Fragile" era Yes.
Primus (With Herb on drums)
I'd say U2, but nobody would notice if Adam Clayton was replaced...so they are out

I'd have to say:
Jenzy has a pretty good point, and to that end: Rush and The Police
Demolition Hammer (they went to shit when the lineup changed)
Deceased (despite the drummer switch a couple years ago)
Blind Guardian (depending on how they sound with the new drummer the old drummer may not have been so integral)
Hypocrisy (though the lineup has recently changed)

I have to return some videotapes.

Black Sabbath - It's just not the same without the original four memebers.

RIP dimebag
The question was related to ANY ONE of the members changing, not just one.
Pantera would have sounded the same with any bass player and Rex was mediocre at best. I think Vinnie and Dime kept him around since he was with them from the early days. Vinnie, Dime and Phil were all critical to the Pantera sound, but Rex could have been replaced by a touring bass player at any point and it still would have been Pantera.
Correct, they were much better with Dio and Ian Gillan singing.Six6VI wrote:Black Sabbath - It's just not the same without the original four memebers.

I saw Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan singing at the Aladdin in Las Vegas back in 84 (Quiet Riot opened). It was really good.hodgy wrote:Correct, they were much better with Dio and Ian Gillan singing.
But you know who really impressed me singing for Black Sabbath? Tony Martin. He did Ozzy better than Ozzy did Ozzy.
Did any of you see Black Sabbath play with Tony Martin singing at the Temple Theatre in Tacoma back in the mid 90's? He was really good, but the highlight of that show for me, was watching Tony Iommi play close up in a small venue.
Iommi was obviously playing for the love of playing, because they couldn't have made much money on that tour. It was AWESOME, he closed his eyes and played from his heart....I enjoyed that show more than any Black Sabbath show I've seen since.

We (Solace in Black) cant practice really without both guitartists there because it effects the sound so much, that its useless to try........

Thomas Stauch left some pretty big shoes to fill. He's very underrated as a formidable drummer, IMO. I hope this new guy is up to snuff.Demolition Hammer wrote:Blind Guardian (depending on how they sound with the new drummer the old drummer may not have been so integral)

I'd have to disagree here. Only Akerfeldt and Lindgren are essential to their sound. Neither Martin Lopez or Martin Mendez have a commanding influence to the overall sound, both just doing whats expected of them and nothing more. After Johan De Farfalla was fired, the band has really lacked that unique bass presence that was found on the first two albums.Rain de Leon wrote:Opeth

Very true! You have a very full sound for just the two of you. Enjoyed your show at Studio 7 last week.sides wrote:I have a drummer, and i am the guitar player/ vocalist... 2 member bands are kinda like that...lol

I am going out and saying Skid Row...When Bach left (although the new singer is close, but just not there for me) it really changed things for me....
*ducks from tomatoes*
Also INXS....I can not stand the fact that they really sold out with the show and I am sorry, but the new singer is so way beyond gay....
But the change for the better for me...only because I am biased...Was Creed....couldnt stand Scott Stapp....I love Myles singing with them, still cant stand the music....but I will choke on it with Myles as the frontman.
I am also interested to see who Nightwish gets to replace Tarja...she grated me after a few songs, but I loved the music and the male vocals...hopefully that will be a change for the better also.

I'm surprised no one said this one yet... The above statement was proven YEARS ago.Adremelech wrote:There are not many bands out there in which every single member is critical to their sound.
Metallica! The Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets line-up of course. Poor Jason did his best and was in the band much, much longer than Cliff ever was but didn't have the influence his predacessor had. Listening to these albums alone doesn't prove Cliff's mark on the sound. You have to know something about the band dynamic in the early days.

I have been thinking about the Alice in Chains reunion quite a bit today. I know that Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley were the main guys to the sound, because it was their volcal harmonizing and jerry's amazing guitar work that is most prominent. but their drummer had a pretty distinct sound, and their bassists sounded different when they changed. their sound seemed to get darker with their second bassist. i am interested in seeing what they do when they get a vocalist, to see how things go. are they going to find a singer that sounds like layne? are they going to go in a different direction (rumor has it that they are going to record a new album)? i read that phil anselmo joined AIC for a couple songs for a VH1 tribute to Heart where they played the songs "Would?" and "Them Bones". I would love to hear Phil's interpretation of the lyrics.
