Nintendo Wii...

Post by ZXRO »

Your thoughts? Great name? Stupid Name? Hoax? What do you think?

Evidently they have announced the name, but it doesn't show up as a registered trademark yet: Read all about it here...

I think it's a silly name, but it has created a publicity frenzy. Everyone is talking about it, so I think that it was a decent marketing move for Nintendo.

It's an idiotic name, and the controller seems pretty dubious (ie Power Glove). Nintendo will soon be bankrupt.
I have to return some videotapes.

As long as Nintendo keeps the market on hand held gaming locked down (which they have for 17 years now) they will never go bankrupt. Add that to the fact that the Wii isn't going to be state of the art, they won't be losing too much money by releasing this, even if it does fail.

The fact that you'll be able to play Nintendo's entire back catalog of games makes this machine worth it all by itself.

Take this controller, turn it 90 degrees to the left, and voila! It's an old school NES controller.

I think the Wii will kick ass. As ZXRO stated, it isn't state of the art, it's actually just souped-up gamecube hardware. But I really don't think that games are going to be any more enjoyable with better graphics, which seems to be the pissing match that the other console makers are in.

I also think that the controller is a great idea. It may not fly, but at least Nintendo has the balls to think outside the box. Today's controllers are way too complex. Everyone freaked out when the NES controllers were introduced too because we were all used to our beloved Atari 2600 joysticks. I think that people should actually TRY USING the new controller before they judge them. If they end up being as great as Nintendo claims they will be, then they might kick a lot of ass.

That would be awesome. It just depends on how they work it. If you have to download each game and can only have, say, 1 game at a time that won't be worth it cause I have a perfectly functional NES for that. If they make it so you can store a library of games on it, and don't charge out the ass to do so, then it will be worth it.

Totally agreed. I think Nintendo would be wise in giving people a great deal on the back catalog as a lure to buy their console. Being able to download an assload of games in a single package for a cheap price is just the way to do that.

What about a small monthly fee to be able to access a database of the games? That sounds better to me.

That would be good too, as long as the fee was (as you said) small.

What is the most you would pay, per month (or year) for unlimited access to a giant database of old school games?

The most would probably be about $20/month or so.

For 20 bucks a month, Princess Peach better show up and suck me off. That is way too much. Hell, Xbox Live is like what? 59 bucks a YEAR?

Well... I should have mentioned that I would only have subscribed for about 2-3 months at that price. Just to go back and be able to play all of those games again.

For a continuous lifetime subscription, I would say it had better be a single digit dollar amount.

I think I'd be willing to match the 50 bucks a year I pay for Live...

They'd better not charge more than like 4 or 5 bucks a month.

I heard rumor a few months back that Nintendo might charge a really low per-hour fee. They'll allow gamers to browse the games database for free, then charge them a couple of cents for every hour they actually play the games.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I don't know how many times I've bought a 1 month subscription for a PC game and ended up only playing it for a week. Personally, I wouldn't spend much time playing any of the older games off of Nintendo's database, as I still have my NES, SNES, N64, Virtual Boy, Gamecube, GBC, and GBA around still. I have all the games I'd want to play in my collection anyhow. Still seems like a good plan for those interested.

Shit. I have a modded X-box with about 1,000 NES SNES N64 games on it. I love being able to play those old games!
I am a big X-box supporter (I love my 360) but I always defend Nintendo (especially the Gamecube) the games were really fun to play and not as 'serious' as a lot of the games for the X-box. I thought the Gamecube games were 'old school fun', in a way. I hope the Wii or whatever they are going to call it is as fun to play as the Gamecube can be.
