2001 Maniacs
Well, I saw a gem of a movie and thaught I would pass this along.....
2001 Maniacs is about four college students who get sidetracked into a little strange town while on a roadtrip. Robert Englund plays the town mayor, and the town is very confederate themed. Anyways, there's sheep fucking, titties, and some cool kills so you might want to check it out.......

Totally...
Saw a review of this in the newest issue of Bizarre. Remake of the old Herschell Gordon Lewis flick Two Thousand Maniacs! Dunno how it stacks up to the original though.

I haven't seen the original, but this one was pretty damn good IMO. It was funny, the gore was okay, and had Robert England playing a confederate mayor. It's worth the rental fee.ZXRO wrote:Saw a review of this in the newest issue of Bizarre. Remake of the old Herschell Gordon Lewis flick Two Thousand Maniacs! Neat...
Yeah, the magazine had a picture of him with a confederate flag eyepatch. Robert England makes any movie worth watching. Anyone see the flick where he played the Marquis de Sade?gsfnw wrote:I haven't seen the original, but this one was pretty damn good IMO. Englund, not England...

No, but that sounds pretty cool, although his Phantom of the Opera kind of blew....ZXRO wrote:Yeah, the magazine had a picture of him with a confederate flag eyepatch. Robert England makes any movie worth watching. Anyone see the flick where he played the Marquis de Sade?
What's the title?
And yes, Englund. My bad!
Uh...
Off the top of my head, I think it was called Wes Craven's Night Terrors...it was about this guy that was a descendant of the Marquis de Sade, and Robert Englund played a dual role.

Actually...it was "TOBE HOOPER'S" NIGHT TERRORS, not Wes Craven. Your description is accurate from what I recall. I saw the film 10 years ago and to be honest found it boring and unexciting. A sure sign that Hooper's career died a long time ago.
As for 2001 MANIACS, it sounds like a fun movie and definitely an updating of the H.G. Lewis classic. I need to track it down at some point. It's been sooo long since I rented anything.

Oh yeah...
You are so right! That's what I get for not bothering to look it up. I think it came out around the same time that Wes Craven started doing direct to video stuff (Wishmaster? I think). Early to mid nineties. I worked in a video store for awhile there and the horror section was my responsibility. It had a shitty cover, but I got it because of Robert Englund. Standard sup par direct to video fare.Darth Tanner wrote:Actually...it was "TOBE HOOPER'S" NIGHT TERRORS, not Wes Craven. Your description is accurate from what I recall. Has anyone here seen the original Herschell Gordon Lewis version? I think the only film of his I've seen is Blood Feast (the old one). I could be wrong about that tho.

saw it a while ago, it is ok. It was very similar to that one where they go to mexico and the town was sealed in a mine and come out every certain amount of years and eat the guests etc... I forget the name. Damn it. Anyone??

The original is pretty good. The Banjo tune at the begining, "... Robert E Lee broke his musket on his knee and from the ground there came an awful sound YEEEEEEEHAW...." Pretty much sets the mood for the film.
The detour scene is lots of laughs.
The movie itself is good fun, though it drags in a few places, and some death scenes don't have as much impact as others.
It's a bit dated by the look of the film (colors) and clothing, other than that, nothing much else dates it.
I'm not too keen on 2001 maniacs. I haven't watched it, it's just that remakes tire me after a while, however sometime I may get around to it. Just as sometime this year I will give House of Wax (2005) a go.
Another "good" HG lewis film would be Gruesome Twosome (Napolean.... haha). It's about an hour long, and it's pretty campy. If you can pick it up for cheap, give it a go.

Damnit, Beavis, put that away. You're not supposed to have your penis out when you're cooking.
The original is classic!! The theme song is a hoot... haven't watched the new one. Is it a remake or a revisioning? Just wondering because the original had some crazy was of killing off people.
Greusome Twosome is funny... I also really enjoyed Color Me Blood Red and The Wizard of Gore...

You mean there is no barrel-rolling in this one?!? Dang! That was one of the best scenes in the original. Oh well, I'd still like to check this revisioning out at some point. But like all the other potential rentals I have yet to see, it will probably be a few years:)gothbat wrote:It's a revisioning. I think the only killing they kept from the original was the quartering. It was pretty good but I'll take the original any day.
Funny that somebody mentioned HOUSE OF WAX (2005) because I was actually watching that the other night. Pretty good movie although I hadn't seen the original. But that detour scene did remind me of 2000 MANIACS. Wonder if it was an intentional reference:)

I absolutely loved it:very gory, very brutal, and very politically incorrect, for the film handled such taboo topics as racism, homosexuality, lesbianism, and bestiality in a very campy way,and director/co-writer Tim Sullivan really gave Herschell Gordon Lewis a run for his money with the many outrageous splatter sequences here(I'm surprised that this film got away with an R rating).
I was one of the few people among those I was with who actually enjoyed this. Of course, almost no one actually had their radios on at the drivein so I could only make out about half of the dialogue. But it had hot chicks, plenty of blood and moved at a brisk enough pace.
The highlight of it for me though was watching some guy trying to take his picture with Johnny Legend, who was totally hammered and not interested in being photographed. Very funny!
