Tell me you've had some play time with this game.

I hunger for it like no other video game.

I can neither confirm nor deny this. I will be picking up a copy for myself.

It will be a game worth waiting for.

You're telling me! I'm going bonkers waiting for it. I thought Geometry Wars and Lumines would keep my mind otherwise occupied until I had it but I was wrong. Epic has such a tight lid on the PR game that I've been recycling the same old previews for weeks now. Cliffy B has been dangling all the PR he is legally allowed to drop in the Something Awful forums Even the reviews were held off until today.

I guess it hit shelves in different places around the country, but there isn't a copy to be found around me. I'm pretty sure I'll have it on the 8th, though.

The lucky few on Awful Games haven't been raving about it, but the word is that it's the first genuine killer app for the 360 and the multiplayer component is going to be THE Live game to play. It is without peer, apparently. Also, co-op mode is being touted on the Awful forums as "the only way to play the game".

Fuck me.

The only website to give it a review score below 9 out of 10 was Eurogamer, but I don't put much faith in that since they're the same site that ranked Chrome Hounds a 5 based entirely on the single player component and that turned out to be one of the most fascinating console games of the year.

The game shipped today, Chris. Surely there is something you can say about it now.

I got my copy today and it's fucking killer. I have only played the single player portion thus far (only about an hour worth) and it's very immersive. The voice acting, graphics and music make for a near cinematic experience. Controls take some getting used to but it gets to be second nature. Note that although I have been playing on the "Casual" difficulty the game is very hard.

A bunch of guys from other forums have been playing co-op Hardcore and described their experience as "fighting tooth and nail for every inch". I'm about to run out and see if I can't bag a copy.

How does active reload work? I've heard vague ramblings about damage bonuses, jammed guns and a meter that you have to time your reload with.

Also, Penny Arcade's forums hinted at voice recognition and character model lip syncing. Something like the microphone/voice commands that Rainbow 6 3 had. It didn't always work to my advantage, but I loved that about R63. Does that work into GoW at all?

edit: Just got back from Best Buy. It's sitting in my car. Thinking about it is going to kill me until I get home at 5:30.

Active reload:
"By default, reloads take a set amount of time and aren't anything flashy. But if you look just below the gun indicator on the screen, you'll see a line sweeping across a bar with a couple of different colors on it. That's the trick. A button press stops the meter. If you stop it in the gray area, the weapon reloads faster. If you stop it in the tiny white zone, you'll reload and all the bullets you just fed into your weapon will do more damage. But if you miss and hit it in the black, the gun jams and takes even longer to reload. It's a fascinating risk-versus-reward scenario that isn't difficult to master, but when you're under fire in a tense situation, you're still likely to screw it up now and then."

I don't think there is any voice control in this game, perhaps people were talking about playing co-op on Live?

Have fun with this game, I probably won't get back to it until this weekend :(

I played some co-op hardcore last night and it kicked my ass. Like Halo, it's amazing to me how important they make every fight seem and the two of us playing were fighting tooth and nail for every inch of ground we could get.

Having actually used active reload now, it makes a lot more sense to me. I also see how the team interacts this time. They're doing their own thing and they're pretty competent at what they do. They don't need my orders. For once I don't feel like I have to micromanage some bullet magnet burden like the teams from the Tom Clancy games.

I have the day off on sunday and all saturday night to play. I'm looking forward to it. Supposedly there is some kind of big sponsored event on sunday, free gamerpics and themes. We'll have to hook up for some co-op then.

I'll also never get tired of the chainsaw. Ever.
