um... rules!

Vulgarizer played Rock & Roll Pizza last Friday with Ceremonial Castings, Rutah and others. Definitely one of our best shows. And great to get out of Seattle to play for new heads.

It seems the 'fans' there are waayy different then here. Kids who actually dig our kind of metal. The crowd was active and responsive.

The negative being, the club doesn't allow people going in and out, even band members.

But other than that, good fucking times. I strongly suggest other extreme metal bands get down there for a show.

Here's Brian taking a break from vocals:

You know it's a funny story, I was talking to that kid outside after the show and he told me that Ronald McDonald, Carrot Top, and Satan all gang banged his mom and he didn't know which one was his real dad. I told him it's safe to say all three had a part in his unholy birth.

I didn't really care for our first Portland show. Bunch of shitty kids staring at their nails and cellphones during our set. Only a select few up front really appreciative of our set. Rock N' Roll pizza was kind've disappointing too in terms of the security attitudes and operation of loading in and out. That place can basically suck it. I have no more patience for venues like that, I don't care how hip they are. I've toured the states twice, in addition to several off and on west coast runs. With big bands, small bands, up and coming bands, you name it. I have some room to be critical. Everything from local mom and pop pubs to House of Blues and the Knitting Factory.

Bottom line-

Treat touring bands well, get them drunk and get them fed and provide decent sound and set up. Not much to ask, you'd be surprised how many good people do this and its not that difficult of a task.

I agree with everything you said. Every point.

I guess I'm a glass half full guy, because the positives of that weekend far outweighed the negatives (certain elements of the club). I focused more on that.

I stood at the door watching the droves of people coming in. Each one that paid was asked "which band did you come to see". There are so many things wrong with that it's silly. But anyway...

yeah i am not sure if we got paid or not, I know I didn't get any free beers or anything, but on the bright side, it was an awesome time, I could smoke and there where 13 year old girls wearing our t shirts!! Now that works for me.

Nothing wrong with that at all.

The best shows you're going to play will be run by people who are familiar and interested in your music. Otherwise its a bunch of fat, chicken strip guzzling tattooed shitheads like at RARP who are purely concerned with drink sales and which band generates the most heads. On a business standpoint its understandable, but it rarely comes down to a love for the music- and isn't that what it's about? No Doubt toured for 9 years playing in front of 10 people a night including the bartender. Someone obviously knew what they were doing to give them a first chance somewhere in the middle of that.

As much as I am a glass half-empty guy (and that'll never change because I'm part native american and realistic hahah), I still rarely ever dwell on the clubs we got fucked over on our last tour. I'm constantly thinking about all the good ones, and the screaming and loving fans approaching me before and after our set. Those memories never die.

But anyways.... Portland's sketchy when you're getting a foot in and playing metal.
