I can't wait either. I love Quentin and Robert so much it's not even funny. Then they go and do a movie together!

And did I read correctly somewhere that Rob Zombie is directing one of the "trailers" in the middle? Woot!

Didn't they also do From Dusk Til' Dawn together as well? One doing the first half of the film, the other the last half of the film.

Anyhoo... my friends and I are going to see this at the drive in this evening...

I hate you Kimberly! None of the drive-ins here open until next weekend, and so far I haven't found one that will be playing it even then. I need to do some calling around. I don't mind waiting the extra week if i can see it in that setting instead of a boring old mall....

Great stuff! I won't spoil anything but "Planet Terror" reminded me of Lenzi's "Nightmare City" and "Death Proof" was a fun ride more like a car chase movie than the slasher I had heard it was. It had an awesome chase scene and was loaded with great dialog.See it ASAP.

PS... Eli Roth sent me a message that he's jealous as well that we are going to see it at the drive in

I plan to see this one today, but after seeing how gorgeous it was, I decided to stay in the sun! 3.5 hours is a long time in a theater on a day like today.

I COULD have seen GRINDHOUSE at a drive-in, but I deferred for several reasons--one was that it's QUITE a trip for me to make (gas prices, anyone?); second, I wouldn't be willing to bring the children along; third, I had to get up early the next morning; and fourth... the drive-in itself announced that it was inserting its OWN intermission into GRINDHOUSE--literally breaking the film in half and stopping for ten minutes for people to hit the snack bar (they were showing GRINDHOUSE with no independent second feature), thus interrupting the intended "continuity" of the movie's OWN intermission. Besides, I didn't have to see it at a mall, and if I was going to see this, I wanted to see it with a crowd and hear them HOWL.

If only I still had access to a REAL grindhouse, such as San Francisco's Electric or Strand Theatres (now strip/porn clubs). The places where my friend Chad and I actually sat through DOLLS, Umberto Lenzi's SACRIFICE (MAN FROM DEEP RIVER) and the early Clive Barker effort TRANSMUTATIONS (UNDERWORLD) on a triple bill. AFTER THE FALL OF NEW YORK on the big screen. DEMONS OF THE MIND as a last-second substitute for the missing print of THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN'T DIE. Albert Zugsmith's PSYCHOPATHIA SEXUALIS (ON HER BED OF ROSES). Not to mention the night Paul and I caught STICK IT IN YOUR EAR (VORTEX), I DRINK YOUR BLOOD and I HATE YOUR GUTS (Shatner as THE INTRUDER!) What, no I EAT YOUR SKIN?

I also have fond drive-in memories of such triple bills as 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS, THE GATES OF HELL and PSYCHO II, not to mention THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD and HOUSE BY THE LAKE. Oh, how 'bout DON'T GO IN THE WOODS, DON'T GO IN THE HOUSE and GRADUATION DAY?

GRINDHOUSE, you've got a lot to live up to for someone who was there... so show me what you've got!

GRINDHOUSE was EXACTLY what I needed to see just about now. It manages to be more than the sum of its parts (because not all of the parts really WORK) by serving as gut-blowing entertainment AND a history lesson no book can fully convey. (I could write a comprehensive article on the "Blood Island" films for Video Watchdog--and remain more than satisfied with the way it turned out, but no matter how well I describe it, could I actually place you in the seat next to mine at the Strand while BRIDES OF BLOOD unspooled? I can host shocking and surprising movies on-line and on cable, but can I really give you the experience of turning on the TV at an unsuspecting age and encountering something you KNEW you weren't supposed to be seeing?)

Okay, I don't have to tell you any more about how much nostalgia means to ME. But Rodriguez and Tarantino had to play not only for MY attention, but for that of the completely uninitiated ("Wow, WHEN A STRANGER CALLS was really scary! What WB show was that girl on again?").

Now, don't expect me to give you the blow-by-blow--you already know the premises of the movies, and you don't need anyone ruining the details.

We get off to an excellent start with the hysterical MACHETE trailer (yep, I want to see THAT movie for real!). "Rated X."

PLANET TERROR is non-stop hysteria with a top-drawer batch of characters. You already know about the soon-to-be-one-legged Cherry Darling--believe me when I tell you that Rose McGowan plays it for everything it's worth. Josh Brolin is unforgettable as the persistent "Dr. Block," Jeff Fahey and Michael Biehn offer inspired work as the seedy barbecue chef and the tooth-gritting sheriff (odd-couple brothers, naturally), Freddy Rodriguez kicks enthusiastic ass as Wray (or is that "El Rey?")--and you even get the Twin Babysitters of Death! Gore? Bad taste? It is all OVER the place, and a more enthusiastic, unapologetic, splatterfest you haven't seen since the early days of Peter Jackson--the difference here is that this one doesn't know it's a comedy (actually, those who say "sendup" and those who say "the real thing" are offered equal ground to stand on).

Intermission time. Rob Zombie's WEREWOLF WOMEN OF THE S.S. Can't say that the ILSA films and other Nazi atrocity movies were ever my favorite cup of exploitation tea, but the effect is nailed perfectly (and if Udo Kier isn't enough, wait till you see the payoff celebrity cameo). Edgar Wright's DON'T! ("DON'T! DON'T! DON'T! DON'T!") is another one I want to see (remember, I saw two DON'TS in one night at the drive-in)! And Eli Roth's THANKSGIVING? Well, I've seen every holiday slasher film you can name, and naturally, Roth goes "too far" as we were all expecting him to. You want to hear howling? Watch the trampoline scene with a crowd. Enough said.

Okay, time for DEATH PROOF. And here's where the film actually starts to lose the true "grindhouse" feel. And actually, my would-be-rival Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle hit the nail on the head--no true grindhouse patron would tolerate the lack of action and non-stop chatter on display throughout the first half of this outing. The chattering is one thing (first we get girls-looking-for-a-good-time sex and drugs chatter, then later we get HOLLYWOOD girls sex-and-movies chatter). Some of it's relevant, as we'll see, but it's still far too indulgent for THIS project (the Tarantino ego seems ALMOST as big as the Tarantino foot fetish, another thing I don't personally share and quickly wearied of). However, you still can't pass this one up. You simply HAVE to see Kurt Russell's performance--he makes the segment compulsive viewing even before we get to the car action, and it's HIS character (no disrespect whatsoever to Rosario Dawson, Vanessa Ferlito, stunt woman Zoe Bell, etc.) that gives relevance to the otherwise monotonous talk-talk-talk-talk-talk (yeah, yeah, give roles to all your friends, but did you have to spend so much time with Eli Roth, for example? What was the payoff to HIS character? Or your OWN, for that matter? And what ever became of LEE? Huh?). Tarantino's offering a more blatant history lesson than Rodriguez... when "Stuntman Mike" talks about his past accomplishments, the actors he's doubled and the series on which he's appeared, he realizes that nobody in the room knows what he's talking about. Want a motivation for his psychotic behavior? That's it. He's depressed, forgotten... and insane. ("How do they get those cars to do those things?" "CGI?") And when some of the actresses talk about car movies that their friends know nothing about? ("GONE IN 60 SECONDS. The REAL one. Not that Angelina Jolie shit.") Stuntman Mike can effortlessly wipe out the uninitiated, but now he's headed for a collision with those rare women (read: audience members) who actually know their stuff. And the stuff, when it hits, is as "real" as the movies get!

Both movies (along with the trailers) are loaded with visual in-jokes that you'll soon lose count of--and you'll also have to keep your ears open... Tarantino blatantly credits Jack Nitczhe's VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS theme during the opening of DEATH PROOF, but watch out for cues from everybody from Stelvio Cipriani to John Carpenter in the meantime.

As for the "grindhouse" effect itself? I loved what Rodriguez did with it (especially the sharp, snapping SPLICE that hits when a reference is made to a certain body part being surgically amputated), and I got a huge kick out of the way the title DEATH PROOF showed up as an insert over the film's "original" title (yep, I saw that happen, too--most notably during a screening of BLOOD FOR DRACULA that had the title card sloppily replaced with a posterboard reading "Andy Warhol's YOUNG DRACULA!"). As for the "missing reel" gags? Once again, Rodriguez wins--his is authentically and cleverly handled, while Tarantino's was much too obvious (you're not supposed to be ABLE to guess "missing reel time" before it happens!). And am I the only one who's just a LITTLE bit surprised that the only nudity to be found in the film is in the mock trailers (although Rodriguez again comes up with a plausible excuse in his entry)?

My valued friend Chad (a devoted father, writer and genre historian himself: you ought to look him up on my Myspace 'friends' section and subscribe to HIS blog)--yes, the same Chad that I saw SACRIFICE, et al, with at the Electric--and I actually split on GRINDHOUSE. To Chad, GRINDHOUSE was the rich boys playing with their toys, rehashing everything they loved about the movies they were saluting without actually offering anything new.

To me, it was just what I was saying about PERFUME a few months ago. Sometimes it TAKES the big-money guys to give us something specific. And absolutely NO major studio would release a film like GRINDHOUSE today unless it had hot-ticket names like Rodriguez and Tarantino attached. For me, it's well worth doing whatever it takes to put something like this on the big screen--as I mentioned earlier, no matter what we write or how well we write it, nobody who hasn't actually sat in that seat and watched such material with an enthusiastic crowd will ever truly comprehend our attachment (affectionate and historical) to the films that defined the "grindhouse" era. (How can watching a pristine, brightly defined copy of HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD on DVD even convey what it was like to stumble across Vincent Dawn's NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES during its actual American release, for that matter?)
Tarantino makes it too clear that he's asking such questions (hence too slow a build for DEATH PROOF), but there's still no substitute for the vehicular mayhem--or, as mentioned, the calm-to-hysterical Kurt Russell performance--waiting for you before it's all over. Rodriguez takes a different approach--he adopts new technology (KNB gore and computer effects to enhance the splatterfest in a way the original inspirations never could) without sacrificing a jot of ferocious attitude. So yes, much as I said when I first saw the KILL BILL films, I would have to say that "everything old IS new again," and that GRINDHOUSE has plenty more to offer than what it forcefully blows into your face. And when I say "it blows," I mean that as a GOOD thing!

Top of my list until the rest of the year makes me reconsider!

I loved the movie(s), like alot of people have said the dialogue in "Death proof" drags on at times, but, Kurt Russell just makes it happen! The first Kill is worth the wait alone.

Anyone have any thoughts on the Rob Zombie "Halloween" trailer? Maybe thats for another thread, but, I thought it looked awesome.

I agree with you there, although Rob Zombie's "Halloween" is definitely another thread for another time(to discuss about).

Since the release of this has been delayed in my part of the world for a good two months and even then split into two independant films (since foreigners apparently wouldn't know what a 'grindhouse' is... gimme a fucking break), I'm considering getting my hands on a, shall we say 'unofficial', copy to hold me over in the interim. Afterall, my version of the grindhouse experience was hazy late night sessions with barely watchable nth generation bootleg VHS tapes of films that were either banned outright, censored by the government or simply too osbscure to have seen local release. There was simply no other avenue to see these films. Baring that in mind and since I simply have no other way to see this film, by doing the dubious I'd be somewhat recreating that experience, my personal 'grindhouse' experience. Perhaps I could find a version with Dutch subtitles and the effect would be complete.

Needless to say, as soon as this hits the cinemas down here, I'll be all over it like pink on dick.

Well, that's fine. We've got remakes of HALLOWEEN, FRIDAY THE 13TH and MOTEL HELL coming, and a belated SLEEPAWAY CAMP sequel. Maybe Wes Craven can adapt another J-horror film for us, and if we're good, he'll give us a HILLS 3. Car chase fans can choose from any number of upcoming CGI epics for their edification.

We get the movies we deserve, I suppose. I, for one, am back to being depressed.

Sounds like Machete is gonna be an actual film in the extras on the Grindhouse DVD.

How rad would that be! Add "Thanksgiving" and we are set!

I don't see how someone coudl NOT like it. Well yeah I do, it's not for everyone I guess. To me, THIS is a movie worth paying to see in the theater. I seriously would go again, to see the parts I missed when smoking. Out of all the movies that I have seen in theaters in my adult life, only 3 were even worth it, and they were all quentin's movies. PF, KB1, and this one. Even though his movie kind of dragged a bit, the first one was worth everything. Either way, he has a good record in my book. I don't go to out much though.

From what I've seen, and I still haven't seen the movie, it's release date worked against it. It lost out to two movies that were in their second week release plus Ice Cube's family flick.

Easter weekend is typically reserved for family friendly movies and with Meet The Robinsons and Are We Done Yet both in release, it had a steep hill to climb. Also, with Blades of Glory, it had to contend with a real lowest common denominator title. More people were going to line up for a 90 minute movie packed with Napoleon Dynamite and Will Ferrell than were going to line up for a movie that didn't really make itself clear as to what it was.

Being a fan of exploitation, QT and Rodriguez, I know what to expect, but the average film goer probably saw the ads and couldn't make heads or tails of what they were looking at. Grindhouse is a genuine niche flick and there's no way it can hang with what is already in release. The fact that it finished fourth in the box office even amazed me.

From what I've seen here and from what all my friends tell me, I have to see it. I have yet to hear a bad word against it outside of reviews that fault it for the same reasons I note above.
Blasphemous_Cacophony wrote:Sounds like Machete is gonna be an actual film in the extras on the Grindhouse DVD.
From what I've read, it's going to be released as its own DVD to coincide with the DVD release of Grindhouse.

It's probably a safe bet that this will have a DVD release similar to the special edition of Sin City with a second disc that breaks the movie up into parts and plays them individually. It also wouldn't surprise me if the missing reels were restored on the DVD.

I feel guilty. In the hopes of seeing this at the drive-in, I passed on it opening weekend, and somehow got talked into going to see TMNT instead! But it's become apparent that this at the drive-in isn't gonna happen, so I took in a matinee the day before yesterday.

I also like Death Proof more than Planet Terror. PT was more classic "grindhouse" than DP, which seemed more like a drive-in film, and it was fun and gory and had some fun gimmicks and all that, but at the end of the day, I couldn't help but think "yawn.... another zombie movie".

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD:

Death Proof, while certainly talky at times, at least offered something different. A guy who kills using his car? Don't see that everyday. And I was genuinely surprised to see the first crop of victims suffer their untimely demise, especially considering the amount of time spent getting to know them. Some might think that means too much talk and not enough action, but I'll take that trade off if it means we see something out of the ordinary. And killing the majority of your cast halfway through is different. Like Psycho, only on a larger scale. At this point, it starts again and almost becomes a second (or third) movie. And the way the tables turned? Again, something different. And the action was intense, far moreso than in Planet Terror, imo.

I will agree that the missing reel gag worked much better in Planet Terror than Death Proof. Not only was it more well timed, but to me it doesn't work as well if you announce it before the movie starts. And I could do without Tarantino actually being IN the movies, as well as his indulgence writing scenes openly discussing other films.

Either way, both films were very cool and the whole thing was a great idea.

Oh, and fwiw, I've decided. I have to list these as two separate movies in the viewing log. lol

My fovorie scene was from Thanksgiving when those 2 guys were poised over the decapitated mascot, and the one guy tastes the blood, and then says "It's blood" and the other guy gives a great :"Son-of-a-BITCH!"
I laughed my ass off the whole movie. It was great!

There's not much that I can say that hasn't been said already. I loved the look, I loved the music, I liked Planet Terror a little more than Death Proof, I loved the trailers and with the exception of Werewolf Women of the SS, I'd love to see full-length versions of the others. The whole thing worked like it was supposed to.

However, if I ever run into Tarantino, I will politely suggest that he cut way back on extreme close-ups of women's feet. It's just a little weird. To his credit, Death Proof was probably the most original thing the guy has done since Pulp Fiction. I expected him to lift heavily from his favorite movies, moreso in this movie than Kill Bill, but apart from some heavy name dropping, I didn't immediately pick out anything that was taken from another movie.

I will echo the familiar statement about Death Proof being pretty chatty. He can name drop Vanishing Point and Dirty Mary Crazy Larry until he's blue in the face, but the fact that those movies get right down to business isn't going to trickle into his own movie where we're assaulted by lengthy static shots accompanied by rapid fire, awkward deliveries of jive-laden writing. The thing that made the guy famous in the first place has never really appealed to me. The blaxploitation inspired writing that he does never works because not even Dolemite has that kind of dialog in it. This is all a small price to pay, though, because when they introduce the car scenes, they make up for everything. The chase scenes were awesome and so was Kurt Russell now that I think of it. His delivery during the scene where he whips out the book was straight Jack Burton and I was more than happy to hear that voice.
